This window may very well be the best start to a transfer window we’ve had for a long time. It has only been a month of the summer, but there’s good reason to believe that the club is already moving in the right direction.

What has really stuck out to me about this window is how decisive Levy and Co. are, beginning with the deal to bring in Guglielmo Vicario.

Having rightfully come to disagreement on the preposterous asking fee with Brentford over David Raya, it seemed like it would be another exhaustive month of desperate negotiation that Spurs fans are all too familiar with.

Think back to as early as the Porro deal in January that took the entirety of the month to get done. This has become a common theme at Spurs in recent years. It was different this time, though, and the next target on the list was swiftly signed in just two days.

The same can be said about the James Maddison deal that was also completed with relative ease, especially for a player the club has been craving for eight years (Coventry Telegraph).

This is not the same Tottenham we’re used to seeing that likes to put off business till the end of the window and is timid, hesitant, and indecisive over signings.

You can sense there’s at least a plan with the intent with which deals are being pursued, and the commitment towards the football that Ange Postecoglou wants to implement.

Manor Solomon is another exciting link but importantly, he feels like a distinctively Tottenham signing – something that was missing in recent recruitments.

Spurs are moving in the right direction this summer

The reputation that Spurs have made for themselves as a team that nurtures and values young talent is one that is etched into the culture of the club.

They have compromised on this identity for a good few seasons now in this frantic, unavailing quest for glory. Even the developmental squads are pitiful. It’s almost as if Spurs, in trying to act like a big club, abandoned the principles that first brought success.

Player targets should primarily be those almost-there players who are about one move away from their big break instead of household names who have already proven themselves at the top level.

The ones that know what it means to play for Tottenham Hotspur instead of ones who think they’re doing the fans a favour.

There’s a certain hunger about them that you don’t find elsewhere, and that has been embodied even in targets Micky van de Ven and Edmond Tapsoba – players filled with grit and determination that are destined to the top, but ones you’ll still have to probably Google to know (Fabrizio Romano).

Something about that has been both successful and exciting at this club.

It’s also key to remember that outgoings are as important as new signings, maybe even more so. There exists a surplus of mediocrity in the squad that simply does not align with the principles of the club. There’s still some way to go this window, but already one exit in Harry Winks is positive news.

It is crucial that the club ships out excess baggage and it’s easier to do so this season given there are no European football commitments.

Early signs suggest that exciting times await us, Spurs fans!
