According to Mark Schwarzer, Tottenham Hotspur’s new goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario, is not good enough to be the starting shot-stopper for the club.

After more than a decade at the club, it seems Hugo Lloris has reached the end of his Spurs career.

The Frenchman suffered a drastic decline in form last season and replacing him was one of the first tasks on the agenda for the North London club this summer.

In the early stages of the current transfer window, it appeared David Raya would be the man to fill Lloris’ gloves. Spurs apparently agreed personal terms with the Spaniard before the move broke down (The Times).

Once that deal fell through, Tottenham moved quickly to sign Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli in a deal worth a reported £16.4m (Guardian).

The Italian keeper has started every game of the pre-season schedule for the Lilywhites, and is largely expected to be between the sticks for the first game of the new season on Sunday.

Is Vicario good enough for Spurs?

There are still some doubts over the credentials of Guglielmo Vicario, and now Mark Schwarzer has voiced his concerns.

Schwarzer told Optus Sport: “The big question for me though is still Hugo Lloris, and will he be staying at the club? Doesn’t look like he will be.

“I don’t think the new signing is good enough at this moment in time from what I’ve seen in pre-season. I know that’s really early and possibly harsh, but I think they still need to get in a top-class goalkeeper if Hugo Lloris moves on and I think that just seems inevitable.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Only time will tell if Guglielmo Vicario is the right man to be our new number-one goalkeeper. It’s always hard for keepers to step into the Premier League and there is no doubt that Vicario will come in for some criticism at some point this season.

How he responds to that will determine whether he will make it at Spurs or not.
