Pundits appear to be lining up to heap praise on Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario after his recent performance against Manchester United.
Guglielmo Vicario was the first new signing of the Ange Postecoglou era at Tottenham this summer, having arrived from Empoli in a deal worth £16.4m back in June (Guardian).
The Italian has been brought in to address the problem in the goalkeeping area, with former number one and club captain, Hugo Lloris, suffering a drastic decline in form over the last couple of years.
Vicario featured prominently for Spurs in pre-season and has since started the first two games of the new Premier League campaign.
The 26-year-old bounced back from a shaky display against Brentford in game week one to put in a fine performance against Manchester United at the weekend.
The Spurs keeper made a handful of impressive saves to keep a clean sheet and help his side to a 2-0 win against the Red Devils.
Guglielmo Vicario named in the Team of the Week
Football pundit Andy Townsend was a big fan of what he saw from Vicario in the latest game, and even named the Spurs stopper in his five-a-side team of the week.
He told talkSPORT: “I’ve gone for [Guglielmo] Vicario at Spurs. Not that he was peppered with shots left, right and centre from United because he most certainly wasn’t.
“First half, first 20 minutes there were a few bits he had to deal with quite well. He made a really good stop from a Casemiro header I think in the second half.
“But from what I’ve seen so far, he looks like a decent goalie. He’s agile, he’s tall, he looks like he can get there, those ones in the top corner he looks like he can get. So I was quite impressed with him, so I’m going to put him in goal.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Guglielmo Vicario put in a great performance against United. He looked confident, commanding, and made a handful of really impressive saves. Hopefully, he can build on that and settle into the English game quickly.
