According to journalist Lyall Thomas, reports that David Raya was Tottenham’s top goalkeeper target this summer may be inaccurate, as Guglielmo Vicario was actually the primary objective.
Spurs were caught lacking at the back far too many times last season, and with 63 goals conceded in the 2022/23 campaign, changes needed to be made this summer.
New Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has wasted little time in repairing the faltering squad he has inherited. The acquisition of long-term target James Maddison has many fans excited.
However, after Hugo Lloris’ drastic decline, it is the signing of a new goalkeeper in Guglielmo Vicario that may well prove to be the most important addition to the Lilywhites’ squad.
Spurs had seemingly set their sights on Brentford keeper David Raya and had agreed personal terms with the Spaniard, but were unable to find middle ground on the Bees’ £40m valuation of the player (Evening Standard).
Vicario was the top target for Spurs, not David Raya
Despite many reports claiming Raya was the top target, Lyall Thomas has countered that by revealing Vicario was actually the number one choice for Spurs.
He told Last Word on Spurs: “I think he’s going to be a good player. He was arguably the best keeper in Italy outside the top teams last season. And actually, I understand that he was the first choice for Tottenham.
“I know a lot was said about David Raya being the first choice. But I think a lot of that was putting two and two together based on the season Raya had had.
“And there was interest in him, the club were big fans of his. But I understand that actually Vicario was the first choice and the one they wanted to go for.”

Guglielmo Vicario was definitely on Tottenham’s radar this summer anyway, and with our strong scouting network in Italy it wouldn’t be surprising if he was actually the top choice.
