Tottenham Hotspur could be incredibly close to signing AS Roma defender Roger Ibanez, with a meeting between the two clubs set to take place ‘in the coming days.’

Adding a new centre-back or two to the Tottenham squad appears to be essential this summer after the defensive issues the side suffered last season. Indeed, Ange Postecoglou has already told the club’s board he needs to bolster his defence during the current transfer window (90 Min).

Spurs have been heavily linked with Bundesliga duo Edmond Tapsoba and Micky van de Ven, who are both thought to be the perfect fit for Tottenham (Football.London).

Aside from those two names, Spurs are also thought to hold an interest in Roma’s Roger Ibanez, with a report from Gazzetta dello Sport from 15th June (via Sport Witness) claiming a meeting had been held regarding the Brazilian.

This weekend, reports from Italy have resurfaced, with the suggestion that Spurs are back in the race for Ibanez after seeing their previous offer rejected (Roma Giallorossa).

Tottenham are £2.5m away from Ibanez deal

Now, the latest from Roma Giallorossa claims the Lilywhites could be very close to striking an agreement for Ibanez, if they just offer €3m (£2.58m) more.

Roma chief Tiago Pinto is said to be due in London “in the next few days” for discussions with a number of clubs. Fulham are mentioned as a possible destination for Ibanez, but it is thought “above all” that Tottenham are the club who could secure his signing.

The report suggests that Spurs can acquire Ibanez if they simply add €3m worth of bonuses to their original offer of €22m (£18.9m) which was rejected earlier this month.

This is a no-brainer really. Ibanez is a quality player and we could sign him for just over £20m if this report is true, which should be well within our budget while leaving room to manoeuvre to sign a second centre-half.
