Tottenham Hotspur may have to look elsewhere in their pursuit of a new central defender after Manchester City’s Aymeric Laporte has apparently turned down the chance to move to North London.

The 2022/23 campaign was a poor showing from Tottenham in many aspects, but without a doubt the main weakness in the team was in defence.

Only five Premier League teams conceded more than Spurs’ 63 goals last season, and three of those teams were relegated from the division.

Understandably, many expect the defensive area to be a key focus of Ange Postecoglou’s first transfer window this summer.

In particular, a new centre-back is very much needed at Spurs ahead of next season and a report from 90 Min claims Postecoglou has already told the board to make this happen.

That same report named Manchester City‘s forgotten man, Aymeric Laporte, as one of the names on Tottenham’s radar.

The 29-year-old made just 24 appearances for the treble-winners last season, and only 12 of those came in the Premier League (Transfermarkt).

According to a report from The Athletic, Laporte is now ‘certain’ to leave City this summer.

Laporte rejects move to Tottenham Hotspur

The latest information comes from sources at Football Insider, who suggest Laporte is “not interested” in a move to Tottenham this summer.

They say the Spanish defender has now “rejected” the possibility of a transfer to the London club.

Apparently, Spurs have already “moved to sound out” the availability of Laporte with a view to signing the centre-half during the current transfer window.

However, due to Laporte’s unwillingness to join, Spurs are thought to have “turned their attention to alternative targets.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Aymeric Laporte is a fantastic defender who has always done a good job when called upon by City. However, I have a feeling that if he is to move on this summer, he will head back to Spain.
