The Daily Mail reporter Jack Gaughan has said that Tottenham’s newest addition, James Maddison, was also of interest to Manchester City this summer.
It had been well documented over the past few weeks that Maddison was Ange Postecoglou’s priority transfer target this summer (Telegraph) and Spurs have managed to deliver the signing before the start of pre-season.
Multiple reports had indicated over the last few months that Spurs’ main competitor for the attacking midfielder’s signature was Newcastle United, with Tottenham managing to beat out the Magpies after they turned their focus to the pursuit of Sandro Tonali (Daily Mail).
Man City were also interested in James Maddison
However, if Gaughan’s latest update is to believe Maddison was also on Pep Guardiola’s wishlist this summer.
The journalist explained that while the Premier League champions had identified the 26-year-old as a target, they had prioritised outgoings before signing any new midfielders.
Gaughan revealed that City’s inability to move on their deadwood quickly opened the door for Spurs to swoop for Maddison.

Had Tottenham dragged on their negotiations with Leicester for Maddison a few more weeks in an effort to lower the price even further, there was a very real chance that one of the big boys could have swooped for the attacking midfielder.
I am quite relieved that we have got this deal over the line swiftly.
