Gabby Agbonlahor has said that he expects Chelsea to beat the likes of Tottenham and Arsenal to the signing of Ivan Toney in January.

Multiple outlets over the last couple of weeks have reported that Tottenham are set to battle Chelsea and Arsenal for Toney’s signature during the January transfer window once the striker’s ban lapses (Mirror).

The Daily Express even suggested at the start of the week that the 27-year-old had already informed Brentford of his desire to leave and that the Bees have begun to look for replacements.

However, The Evening Standard claimed a couple of days ago that Spurs are not expected to vie for Toney’s signature in January and are instead set to prioritise additions in other areas such as central defence.

The report further added that the Bees are expected to demand £80m for the England international’s services even though he would only have 18 months left on his contract in January.

Will Chelsea win the race for Ivan Toney?

Agbonlahor has opined that the Blues will blow Spurs and the Gunners out of the water financially in the race for Toney’s signature.

The former Aston Villa striker told talkSPORT (26/09/23 at 6:30 am) about the Brentford star’s future: “Arsenal had to get Raya on loan because of FFP, so they can’t afford him. Everyone is talking about Arsenal, so they have to sell someone to get him.

“We have seen what Chelsea offers with their financial packages. Spurs won’t be able to match Chelsea, so I see him going to Chelsea (to sign Ivan Toney).”

Just like Arsenal, Chelsea also have some FFP concerns and might need to sell some players if they decide to push ahead with a move for Toney. Tottenham could potentially benefit by landing Conor Gallagher in January if the Blues decide to listen to offers for the 23-year-old.
