Roy Keane has admitted that Troy Parrott’s goal for the Republic of Ireland against Lithuania was important for the Tottenham man’s confidence as his career had stalled a little over recent times.

After a lacklustre start to his loan spell at MK Dons, Parrott has been in fantastic form for the League One club since the turn of the year.

Although the 20-year-old has not scored as many goals as he would have liked this season, he has become creator-in-chief for Liam Manning’s side in the number ten role.

The Spurs youngster, who picked up the Dons’ Player of the Month award for February, translated his form to the international scene this week.

After coming on as a substitute in the 63rd minute, Parrott struck a brilliant half-volley from outside the box in stoppage time to help the Republic of Ireland to a 1-0 win over Lithuania.

While Keane was pleased with Ireland’s win and Parrott’s contribution, he was less than impressed by the celebration after the final whistle.

The Man Utd legend told ITV Sport (30/03/22 at 12:05 am): “It was an important win. Better late than never, but they made hard work of it.

“I think the celebrations at the end are way over the top. But an important goal, even for Parrott, he’s a young player.

“His career has probably stalled a little bit. But they kept going. Showed a bit of spirit and fight. You take that win. The feel-good factor. Keep that going. A bit of momentum.

“Honestly. That’s way over the top. For managers, staff and players. To react that way, to a friendly win. Come on! Get over it.”

Goals breed confidence for strikers and Parrott will certainly be buoyed by that strike. I would not be surprised if the floodgates now open for the 20-year-old back at MK Dons until the end of the season.

He will then have an opportunity to impress Conte and his coaching staff during pre-season. If they do not feel he is quite ready for the first-team at Tottenham, then a loan to the Championship club could be on the cards next season for the youngster.
