Roy Keane admitted that he was impressed with the performance Tottenham produced in their season opener on Saturday and backed the Lilywhites to have a ‘brilliant’ campaign.

Spurs fans may have been surprised to see none of the new signings making Antonio Conte’s starting eleven for the club’s season opener against Southampton, with the Italian choosing to keep faith in the same team that finished last season so well.

The match did not get off the best of starts for the home side as James Ward-Prowse gave Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men the lead with just 12 minutes gone on the clock.

However, Spurs came roaring back to score twice in quick succession to take a 2-1 lead into the interval before another quickfire double in the second half saw the result wrapped up just past the hour mark.

Keane insisted he had no doubts that Tottenham would come back from going a goal down on Saturday, given the momentum and belief at the North London club at the moment.

The former Manchester United man told Sky Sports Premier League (7:11 pm, August 7, 2022) about Spurs’ 4-1 win: “You just knew yesterday they would come back, strength in depth, outstanding manager, there’s momentum at the club, obviously a lot of belief and confidence. I think Spurs are set up for a brilliant season.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Roy Keane has never been particularly complimentary about Tottenham in the past. The fact that even he is giving such high praise does suggest Spurs might be on the cusp of something special under Conte.

However, you cannot read too much into one performance, particularly given how poor a side Southampton are. We will learn a lot more about the side when they travel to Stamford Bridge next week.
