Tim Sherwood has said that Yves Bissouma is a better player than Moises Caicedo, who moved to Chelsea for a British record £115m transfer fee this summer.

There was plenty of excitement around Bissouma when he arrived at Tottenham last year on the back of a few excellent campaigns for Brighton.

However, the Mali international struggled to get much game time under Antonio Conte, with the Italian even stating publicly that the midfielder was ‘struggling’ with the tactical demands of his system (The Athletic).

Postecoglou has had no such qualms about using Bissouma, throwing him straight into his starting eleven after arriving at the club, and the midfielder has repaid the Australian’s faith.

The 27-year-old has been one of the best players across the Premier League so far this season and delivered another dominant display in the North London Derby on Sunday.

Is Yves Bissouma better than Moises Caicedo?

Sherwood has praised Postecoglou for getting the best out of the former Brighton man and opined that he is a better player than Caicedo, despite the amount that the Blues paid for the Ecuadorian.

The former Tottenham interim head coach told No Tippy Tappy Football podcast about Bissouma: “Outstanding! I think Postecoglou’s got to get all the credit for that because he’s all of a sudden put the arm around the boy and said: ‘Fresh Start, no matter what the managers previously felt of you, this is the way we’re going to play, I think it will suit your style. I want you to play with a lot of freedom, want you to drift with the ball’ like he does.

“He goes through the holes, you know, it’s alright passing it through lines, but this boy moves through lines and drives with it, dribbles, sees a pass, wins the ball back, works hard for the team, really enjoying his play and fans are loving him at the moment, whereas if you asked them at the end of last season, they would have said we’ve to get rid of him.

“I mean, he was a fantastic player at Brighton and we talked about players who leave Brighton and go to bigger clubs and it takes some time. This boy’s alive now. Fantastic!

“For me, I mean, it’s a big statement because Caicedo’s gone for a lot of money, but I think he’s got more to his game than Caicedo. Bissouma was always the one, Caicedo’s a lot younger, but I just believe he has more facets to his game, I really do.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Caicedo is an extremely talented player but Bissouma was arguably better than the 21-year-old at Brighton and proved himself over a longer time frame.

The Mali international is arguably the most important player in our current system, given his press resistance and ability to help progress the ball.
