According to Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur are battling Aston Villa to sign Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.
Bentancur had been a mainstay in Juventus’ midfield since moving to Turin back in 2017. However, the midfielder has been in and out of the side this season, with almost half of his 19 league appearances so far coming from the substitute’s bench (Transfermarkt).
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Spurs have asked to sign the Uruguay international on loan while negotiating with Juve over a deal for Dejan Kulusevski.
However, the journalist stated that the Serie A giants are not accepting Tottenham’s request to sign Bentancur on a temporary deal.
This has been backed up by Sky Sports, who suggest that Massimiliano Allegri’s side prefer to sell the midfielder permanently before Monday’s transfer deadline rather than loaning him out.
The report claims that Aston Villa have made an offer of £16.5m upfront plus £4m in bonusses for the 24-year-old, which has been turned down by Juve.
The Old Lady are alleged to be holding out for £21m upfront for Bentacour. However, it is asserted that Villa and Juve are ‘not too far apart’ in their negotiations.
Spurs Web Opinion
If Spurs do want Bentacour, they probably only view the Uruguayan as a temporarily stop-gap, given that they are reportedly trying to offload all three of Dele Alli, Ndombele and Lo Celso (Evening Standard).
Bentacour would not improve our starting eleven and I doubt Conte views him as a long-term option. So, I will not be bothered if Villa win the race for the 24-yer-old.
