Tottenham are leading the race to sign Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur with Aston Villa withdrawing their interest in the player, according to GOAL Italia’s Romeo Agresti.

Spurs are set for a busy few days leading up to next Monday’s transfer deadline having seen deals for wingers Adama Traore and Luis Diaz poached (The Telegraph).

Attention has now turned in the direction of Juventus’ Bentancur, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claiming Spurs have asked to take the Uruguay international on loan.

Fellow Premier League outfit Aston Villa have also held an interest in the 24-year-old, having a reported £20.5 million bid rejected on Friday (Sky Sports).

However, Agresti reports the Villans do not intend on submitting a new offer and have now pulled out of the race for Bentancur, leaving Spurs as the frontrunners for his signature.

Bentancur joined Juventus in 2017 and has had mixed involvement with the Bianconeri this term. He has made 22 appearances in Serie A, with 13 of those coming as starts (Transfermarkt).

Villa’s reported exit from negotiations should clear a path for Spurs to push on and secure a deal at a quicker pace. Spurs could do securing reinforcements at pace having had a tough week trying to land their targets, and Bentancur could be a useful option to bring into the side.
