Tottenham Hotspur’s midfield pairing of Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma have impressed so far this season and competition for places will only get tougher when Rodrigo Bentancur returns to fitness.

The Uruguayan international has not played for Tottenham since rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in February’s defeat at Leicester City which saw the former Juventus player have to go under the knife to repair the injury.

He was one of Spurs’s standout players before the injury last season and unsurprisingly, his absence correlated with a horrific run of form towards the end of the season which saw the club finish in eighth place in the Premier League table.

Rodrigo Bentancur is back in Spurs training

Bentancur joined his Tottenham team-mates in their warm-up routines ahead of training yesterday with manager Ange Postecoglou admitting that the player was left disappointed after he was told to finish the session after half an hour in order to manage his recovery.

Postecoglou told Football.London: “Rehab it is the toughest bit. Talk to any player, it is not just the work but the solitary element of it. He was buzzing yesterday but it is good.

“Fair to say he has a fair bit of work to do and great to have him involved. He was dejected of course when we had to pull him out of it after half an hour.”
