Tottenham Hotspur star Micky van de Ven is steadily working his way into the fold of the Netherlands national team, but in his latest appearance, he made a glaring error that has been criticised by a pundit.

Micky van de Ven has been a revelation since arriving at Tottenham this summer. The former Wolfsburg man has slotted into the heart of the Spurs defence with ease and has formed an incredibly effective partnership with Cristian Romero.

The 22-year-old has been one of the stars of the Ange Postecoglou era so far, and even bagged his first goal for Spurs in the 1-0 win over Luton Town before the international break.

Van de Ven’s fine form has led to a first senior call-up to the Netherlands squad for this current set of international fixtures.

The young defender earned his first cap last week, coming on as a substitute with ten minutes to go in the 2-1 defeat against France.

Van de Ven criticised for mistake on Netherlands duty

However, his latest appearance for Holland, a 15-minute substitute cameo, has seen Van de Ven draw some criticism from ESPN’s Hans Kraay, after the Spurs man played a sloppy pass which put his side in danger of conceding.

Kraay said: “Really a ridiculous and worthless ball. How can you make it up? This is a really ridiculous ball at every football level in the Netherlands, including the lowest of the low. Chip it on the striker or give it to Tijjani Reijnders in front of you, but [not] this.”

In his defence, Van de Ven was playing at left-back, but Kraay added: “At FC Volendam in the Kitchen Champion Division he also started at left-back and he did that very well, but he is much better in the middle. He also plays for Tottenham, and they really run away with him there.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I’m not going to lose any sleep over Van de Ven struggling at left-back for the Netherlands, and neither should he, really. He made a mistake, it didn’t cost his team, and he will never really be asked to play there for Spurs anyway so shouldn’t be an issue.
