Gareth Southgate has admitted that he has been impressed with James Maddison’s form this season and remarked that the Tottenham man is a good character to have in the changing room.
Maddison has undoubtedly been one of the standout players across the Premier League so far this season, having taken his game to a new level since his switch to Spurs in the summer.
The 26-year-old is thriving as the most advanced of the three midfielders in Ange Postecoglou’s system, having scored twice and registered five assists so far this season (Transfermarkt).
Maddison is a great character in the dressing room
The attacking midfielder started for England in their 1-0 win over Australia on Friday, which was only his fifth cap for the Three Lions.
Given his current form, one would expect Maddison to make England’s starting eleven for their upcoming Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy, and Southgate’s latest words certainly indicate that he is in line to do so.
When asked about the Tottenham man, the England boss said (via Tom Barclay): “He is in a really good vein of form…a really good character around the group. He connects people well.
“We have got the more steady, serious guys & we have a lot of guys who bring a lot of sunshine.”
Spurs Web Opinion
While Maddison’s quality is there for all to see, his influence off the pitch cannot be overstated. The 26-year-old is quite clearly popular in both the England and the Spurs dressing room and is someone who leads by example as well as vocally.
