Mathew Upson was extremely impressed by the performance that Destiny Udogie delivered against England on Tuesday.
It was another big feather in Udogie’s cap last night as he was handed his first start for Italy in a high-profile clash at Wembley.
The 20-year-old was completely unfazed by the occasion and had the aura of an experienced player who has well over 50 caps to his name.
The Tottenham man was composed in defence and confidently strode forward with the ball from the back on a number of occasions, with his impressive work down the left leading to Italy’s opener from Gianluca Scamacca on 15 minutes.
Udogie was one of the best players on the pitch in the first half but he was replaced by Inter Milan’s Federico Dimarco just past the hour mark as Luciano Spalletti’s men went in search of an equaliser.
Destiny Udogie is impressing on all counts this year
In the end, the away side found themselves on the end of a 3-1 loss but Upson was blown away with what he saw from the Spurs star on the night.
The former England centre-back told the BBC Sport website: “We’ve touched on him a couple of times in this first half already, Destiny Udogie. He’s just shown there exactly why he has started tonight.
“Such a driving run, bursting forward with such energy. Coming into the box from the left and doing a few one-twos. Just brings another dimension to this Italy side.”

Udogie has effortlessly passed each big challenge that has been put in front of him and there is no doubt that his ceiling is extremely high. The 20-year-old might just be the best signing we made during the Fabio Paratici era.
