According to reports from the Daily Mail and La Republica, Tottenham Hotspur are ready to part way with Victor Wanyama over the course of the next few weeks, with the player attracting particular interest from Italian side AS Roma.
This is of course not the first time Wanyama is being linked with a move away from North London, with several outlets reporting the same earlier in the window. Wanyama himself came out to quash all rumours of an exit a couple of months ago.
Speaking to goal.com, Wanyama said, “I still have a contract with Spurs and that is what I want to see through.
“I did not have a good season with the team because of injury and my aim now is to work hard during this break and return for next season even stronger and help them perform even better.”
So, on the face of it, the chance of Wanyama being allowed to leave this summer does appear slim. The Kenyan international is a fan favourite among the Tottenham faithful and clearly one of Pochettino’s favourites since he has signed him at 2 different clubs.
However, the midfielder suffered yet another injury during the pre-season tour in the United States, forcing him to fly back to London for treatment. While the club has not confirmed the extent of Wanyama’s injury, he is expected to miss the start of the season.
The 26-year-old was forced to sit out most of the 2017/18 season due to a knee injury, managing to start just 8 games in the league. So, its possible that the club’s medical team has now concluded that Wanyama’s knee issues are more severe than previously thought, in which case it might make sense for the club to cash in on the Kenyan now.
Additionally, its been extensively reported that Tottenham need to sell a few non-homegrown players to generate funds for their targets and free up spaces in the squad. Given that the club hasn’t received suitable offers as of yet for the likes of Mousa Dembele, Moussa Sissoko, Fernando Llorente, Vincent Janssen and Toby Alderweireld, Levy might be temped to consider offers for Wanyama.
Tottenham have been linked to a whole host of defensive midfielders in recent days including the likes of Marcelo Brozovic, Tanguy Ndombele, Stanislav Lobotka and Sander Berge. Given that both Eric Dier and Harry Winks can play in the same position and Dembele looks set to stay, it wouldn’t be all that surprising if the Kenyan’s Tottenham career comes to an abrupt end this summer.
