Danny Murphy has said that Cristian Romero has matured as a player this season as the centre-back is no longer getting too emotional or looking for pointless fights.
Romero has emerged as the leader of what is a young Tottenham backline, which consists of three relatively inexperienced players in Pedro Porro, Micky van de Ven, and Destiny Udogie.
The Spurs defence passed yet another difficult test on Saturday at Kenilworth Road as they had to play with ten men for an entire half in a hostile atmosphere and had to deal with the home side’s direct and physical approach.
Ange Postecoglou showered praise on his defenders after the 1-0 win, singling out Romero for organising the backline and shepherding his teammates (Football.London).
Is Cristian Romero now maturing as a defender?
In light of the improvement that the 25-year-old has shown this season, Murphy believes that the Tottenham vice-captain is now potentially one of the best centre-backs in the world.
The pundit told BBC Match of the Day (07/10/23): “He’s [Romero] is potentially one of the best because he’s composing himself better.
“He’s not as emotional, he’s not diving in and wanting to fight everyone all of the time. Maybe the confidence of winning the World Cup, whatever it is, he’s maturing as a footballer.”

Postecoglou’s decision to make Romero the vice-captain has proved a masterstroke as it has forced the Argentine to show more maturity on the pitch and set an example for some of his younger teammates.
