Darren Bent thinks Son Heung-min would have been desperate to prove a point this season after the comments that were made about Tottenham’s chances following Harry Kane’s departure.
When Tottenham’s record goalscorer joined Bayern Munich in the summer, some pundits understandably questioned where the goals were going to come from for the Lilywhites this season and wrote them off completely from the race for European qualification.
In fact, the likes of Paul Merson (Sky Sports) and Gabby Agbonlahor (Football Insider) even suggested that Spurs would struggle to finish in the top half of the table this season.
However, eight games into the campaign, Ange Postecoglou’s men are sitting pretty at the top of the table with 20 points, having won six and drawn two.
Heung-min Son took Harry Kane chatter personally
Son has delivered in front of goal, having found the back of the net six times so far, and Bent believes that Kane’s departure has benefited the South Korean.
The pundit told Premier League Productions (07/10/23 at 12:15 pm) about the Tottenham captain: “He has been fantastic. It’s almost a blessing Kane leaving.
“He got off to a bit of a slow start playing from the left. But since he has moved to centre-forward, with that first game against Burnley, he hasn’t looked back. A really intelligent footballer.
“When the chaos is moving toward the goal. He always hangs back a little bit. Gives himself space. Finds that space in the box, and then he is a really, really good finisher as we know. One of his biggest strengths is that he can finish with both feet. The moment he is in full flow, then no one can catch him.
“He is somebody who they moved to centre-forward when Kane left and he has gone ‘do you know what. I can score the goals’ and he has been absolutely brilliant this season – it almost looks like, to me, that he took it personally.
“When everyone thought ‘how are they going to get on without Harry Kane? They are probably going to finish the bottom half’. He said ‘no, I can carry this club forward’ and he is doing that.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Son has stepped up and delivered in the past whenever Kane has been out injured. So, there would have definitely been a part of him that would have relished the opportunity to be the main man at the club following the England captain’s departure.
