Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has explained the club’s approach to the transfer market, insisting this is not a club that will buy success, but will look to the academy to develop stars instead.

It has been a difficult couple of years for Tottenham and Daniel Levy. Managerial appointments have not worked out, the team have failed to meet expectations, and supporters have been very vocal in their unhappiness with the way the club has been run.

Many fans have accused the ownership of not investing sufficient money in the squad, and when money has been put into signing new players, it has not been used effectively.

Things have changed rather drastically at the club this summer, however. The new manager, Ange Postecoglou, has won the hearts of Spurs fans with his endearing personality and his propensity for free-flowing, attacking football which has seen the side remain unbeaten in the first five Premier League games.

The £86m sale of Harry Kane was an inevitable one, but still left fans disappointed. It remains to be seen how, or if that money will be reinvested in the squad.

Money can’t buy success for Spurs, says Daniel Levy

There is renewed optimism that the Lilywhites can find some success with their new manager and this new style of play. One thing that Tottenham fans should not expect, however, is for vast sums of money to be thrown at trying to win trophies.

Daniel Levy told Bloomberg: “We’re very much a club that believes in the academy producing players that can become hopefully superstars at Tottenham.

“We’re not a club that can buy success. That’s the reality and we have to understand that. And we needed a manager who was completely aligned with our philosophy.”

In one regard, I agree and understand where Levy is coming from with this statement. In an ideal world, everyone would rather their club produce star players like Harry Kane every year and win silverware through more traditional methods.

But, in today’s climate, and with the kind of commercial success Tottenham enjoy, we have to make sure we don’t get left behind by other clubs in the league.
