Tim Sherwood is sceptical about whether Daniel Levy would sanction a move for Ivan Toney in January.

It has been reported widely over the past couple of weeks that Toney is expected to be on the move in January when his ban lapses, with Tottenham named as one of the clubs at the front of the queue for his signature.

This includes an update by The Mirror on September 19, which suggested that Spurs are battling London rivals, Arsenal and Chelsea for the 27-year-old’s services.

The report claimed that Brentford would demand £60m for the striker even though he will only have 18 months left on his deal and that Arsenal are particularly keen on the player, having already explored a deal for him in the summer.

A few days ago, The Daily Express revealed Toney has already informed Thomas Frank that he wants a new challenge in January.

The publication asserted that the Bees were ready to listen to offers for the centre-forward and had already started looking for potential replacements.

Tottenham are unlikely to spend big on Ivan Toney

However, Sherwood believes that Spurs are unlikely to spend big on a player who will turn 28 in a few months.

The former Tottenham interim head coach told Sky Sports News (1:26 pm, September 23, 2023): “I am not sure Tottenham would [move for Toney], based on his age. I am not sure Daniel Levy would pay £50 million+ for a player of his age.”

Since Postecoglou came through the door, there has been a definite change in transfer strategy, with the club now looking towards younger talents.

However, they also showed with their acquisition of Maddison in the summer that they are prepared to move for readymade, Premier League-proven stars if the right opportunities open up.
