Fabrizio Romano has assured Tottenham fans that the North London club will be getting a top goalkeeper if they complete a deal to sign Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli.
Vicario is a late bloomer, having spent most of his career in the lower leagues in Italy before catching people’s eye after joining Empoli on loan in 2021.
The 26-year-old’s impressive displays at the Carlo Castellani Stadium saw the club make the deal permanent last summer and the goalkeeper has gone on to have an even more impressive campaign in 2022-23, which has seemingly attracted the attention of several big hitters.
90 min revealed a couple of days ago that Tottenham could face competition from the likes of Inter Milan, Juventus, AS Roma and Fiorentina for the goalkeeper this summer.
However, the Lilywhites appear to be on the verge of winning the race for Vicario, with Gianluca Di Marzio revealing on Wednesday evening that Ange Postecoglou’s men have reached a ‘verbal agreement in principle’ with Emploi on a €20m (£17.2m) fee.
Fabrizio Romano sings the praises of Vicario
Romano has now waxed lyrical about the Italian shot-stopper, describing him as ‘special’.
The journalist said on his YouTube channel: “If you don’t know him (Vicario), don’t worry, he is a very good goalkeeper, probably one of the best in Serie A last season with Onana and Maignan. What he did last season was really special.”
Spurs Web Opinion
The pace at which Tottenham made a move for Vicario once they realised Brentford’s unwillingness to change their stance on Raya, suggests that the North London club rate the Italian very highly and have been keenly monitoring his situation for a while.
By all accounts, the 26-year-old’s shot-stopping is up there with the best. The fact that Romano is comparing him with the likes of Maignan and Onana is very encouraging.
