AC Milan goalkeeping coach Luigi Turci has said that Italy will have to hand opportunities to Guglielmo Vicario if he continues in the same vein for Tottenham.
Even though Vicario’s stock had risen considerably in Italy owing to his two excellent campaigns for Empoli, he was still a relative unknown for Premier League fans when Tottenham secured his services in the summer.
Some Spurs fans were not too happy at the club’s decision to pursue the Italian over David Raya, with a few seeing it as the Lilywhites simply taking the cheaper option.
However, the 26-year-old has silenced his doubters with the way he has started the campaign, having hardly put a foot wrong in the first four league games of the season.
Vicario has not only come up with crucial saves but he has also impressed with his decision-making in possession, helping Spurs play out from the back time and again.
The Spurs star is yet to win a cap for Italy, with Gianluigi Donnarumma ahead of him in the pecking order, but Turci believes that the former Empoli man is now knocking on the door.
Vicario should be awarded with chances for Italy
He told Tuttomercatoweb: “Donnarumma is of absolute value and for me, he will beat every record made by his colleagues previously. If he continues like this, Vicario will have his chances.
“I saw the start of the season at Tottenham and he is an added value, he was decisive for the results thanks to extraordinary interventions. He seems to be there forever, even with his teammates he shows a beautiful personality. But now is not the best time to see it.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It is unfortunate for Vicario that Italy have Donnarumma. The PSG star is one of the leaders in the Azzuri dressing room and is still quite young, which means that the Tottenham man is not likely to get many opportunities for his national side, no matter how well he does.
