Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge has revealed that Inter Milan and Juventus were both plotting moves for Guglielmo Vicario in the summer before Tottenham swooped for the goalkeeper.
Vicario has had an excellent start to his Tottenham career and is already starting to endear himself to the Spurs faithful.
The goalkeeper has come with crucial saves at important times in several matches, has impressed with his distribution and has also demonstrated his leadership skills by constantly belting out instructions to his defenders.
It was reported by Football.London’s Alasdair Gold last week that Ange Postecoglou has already asked the goalkeeper to be part of the club’s new leadership group and to make his voice heard in the dressing room.
Bridge has now revealed Vicario’s impressive start to his Spurs career is not a surprise to those who followed him in Italy, claiming that several Serie A giants were exploring moves for the 26-year-old in the summer.
Juventus and Inter were planning late Vicario bids
The journalist said on the Last Word On Spurs: “The information we got originally was from our colleague in Italy, Gianluca Di Marzio. I then spoke to another couple of colleagues in Italy. I said look, I don’t know everyone, can you tell us about this guy, I don’t really know much about this goalkeeper.
“They said you are getting our best prospect, best goalkeeper. Buffon goes on about him. But they are all just really huge fans. And one journalist said to me that Inter Milan and Juve were going to go in for him last minute. That’s why maybe Spurs had just decided to just do it.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Like most Spurs fans, I was disappointed when the club chose against signing David Raya but I have been pleasantly surprised by how well Vicario has done so far.
Not only has he proved reliable between the sticks but he also appears to be an effervescent personality and is thus great for dressing room morale.
