Sport have revealed that Arsenal are now leading the race for Royal Antwerp midfielder Arthur Vermeeren, who is rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar.
Vermeeren established himself as a mainstay in Antwerp’s midfield last season and has begun the new campaign in fine form, with five assists and a goal in 15 appearances across all competitions so far (Transfermarkt).
90min reported a couple of days ago that the central midfielder is on the radar of several Premier League clubs, including Spurs and Arsenal, ahead of the January transfer window.
Arsenal leading the race for Arthur Vermeeren
If Sport’s latest update is to be believed, it is the Gunners who are at the front of the queue to win the race for Vermeeren’s signature.
The report discusses Barcelona’s interest in the 18-year-old, revealing that the La Liga giants have scouted the youngster extensively and have been impressed by what they have seen.
However, the report states that the Catalan club’s current financial situation is a big roadblock to any move, with Arsenal willing to pay a bigger fee for the Belgian international.
The outlet adds that Mikel Arteta has insisted that the Arsenal hierarchy win the race for Vermeeren when the transfer window reopens.
The publication also names Liverpool, Manchester United, West Ham United, Brighton, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, Ajax and Monaco as clubs interested in the midfielder but makes no mention of Spurs.
Spurs Web Opinion
Tottenham’s transfer policy has now shifted towards identifying and securing the best young talent around the world as evidenced by the signings of Alejo Veliz and Luka Vuskovic recently. So, I would not be surprised if we see Spurs get heavily involved in the race for Vermeeren.
