Journalist Paul Brown has suggested that while Ange Postecoglou will be delighted to have Rodrigo Bentancur back, the Uruguayan might not walk into Tottenham’s starting eleven when he returns to full fitness.

Bentancur had an exceptional first 12 months at Tottenham following his move from Juventus in January of last year but the midfielder has not kicked a ball since suffering an ACL injury in February.

The 26-year-old was certainly a huge miss in the final few months of last campaign, with Spurs struggling to pick up consistent results without the Uruguay international pulling strings in the middle of the park.

Tottenham have not missed him as much so far this season, owing to the exceptional displays of Yves Bissouma and Pape Mater Sarr, but Bentancur is now thought to be nearing fitness.

The Standard reported this week that the former Juve star is stepping up his recovery and is expected to be back in action in November.

Will Bentancur walk into the Spurs starting XI?

When asked about Bentancur’s impending return, Brown has now told GiveMeSport: “There’s a good range of complementary profiles in there, which I think all work well and nicely together.

“It’s not easy to see who Bentancur would immediately replace, but I’m pretty sure that Postecoglou will be rubbing his hands at the prospect of getting him back and having even more competition in that area to spur people on.

“I’m pretty sure he will find a way back into that team at some point, but he might have to be patient for his chance when he is fit.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Spurs fans are understandably salivating at the prospect of a Bentancur, Bissouma and Maddison trio in the middle of the park. However, the 26-year-old might take a while to get back to his best, given that he is returning from a serious injury.

In addition, Sarr’s work-rate off the ball is exceptional and we might be a little more susceptible to counter-attacks when we lose the ball without the Senegalese youngster’s energy in the middle of the park.
