Trent Alexander-Arnold says James Maddison is exceptional at receiving the ball between the lines and admitted that he tries to learn from watching the Tottenham man operate.
Maddison’s talent had never been in doubt as he had posted some impressive numbers for what was at times a struggling Leicester City side over the past few years but the midfielder has undoubtedly taken his game to a new level since his switch to Spurs.
The 26-year-old has quickly become one of the main attacking fulcrums of Ange Postecoglou’s side and his displays are a key reason why Tottenham are sitting at the top of the Premier League table.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is a James Maddison fan
Maddison has often proved the difference in the final third for the Lilywhites so far this season, with seven goal contributions (five assists and two goals so far) to his name but it is his ability to receive the ball in tight spaces that Alexander-Arnold is particularly impressed by.
The Liverpool star told Channel 4: “James Maddison is someone receiving the ball in those tight spaces, he’s an exceptional talent.
“Something that he’s worked on and can do it really, really well. So, you know, I watch him closely in training to see how he does it.
“How many times he checks his shoulders, how does he know what’s around him, when to turn, when to set.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I did not realise just how good Maddison’s feet were and how press-resistant he was until he arrived at Spurs. He has been given the freedom to drop deep to receive the ball by Ange Postecoglou and the 26-year-old always appears to have a picture in his head of what is around him.
