It was revealed by BBC’s Match of the Day (07/10/23) in their coverage over the weekend that teams who have got 20 points or more in their first eight league games of the season almost always finish in the top four.

Even the most optimistic of Spurs fans would not have expected the team to start the season so impressively, given that this was supposed to be a transitional season.

After their hard-fought win against Luton Town, the Lilywhites now sit at the top of the table, having won six and drawn two of their eight Premier League matches.

Their North London rivals, Arsenal, have an identical record after consigning Manchester City to their second loss of the season on Sunday.

The omens are good for Tottenham this season

Match of the Day revealed where the 28 previous teams to have 20 or more points after eight Premier League games had finished in the past.

11 of those have gone on to win the title, while 26 of those sides had managed to finish in the top four.

That was a point of discussion among the MOTD panel, with Ian Wright insisting that he is not worried about Spurs’ start to the season.

Here is the transcript of what was said:

Murphy: “Look at this, this is exciting for Tottenham fans. 28 teams, 26 of them with the start like this, have ended up in the top four.”

Lineker: “Never mind that, 11 of them have been champions, Danny!”

Murphy: “I didn’t want to say that Gary because Wrighty is here and I didn’t want to worry you, Wrighty.”

Wright: “I’m not worried.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Barring a small minority, Spurs fans are not getting carried away with the start and are not anticipating a title challenge. Most supporters seemingly realise that a top-four finish this season would be an excellent achievement for Ange and would give us a lot to build on for next campaign.
