HEURELHO GOMES has thanked the Tottenham Hotspur fans for their backing during his difficult first campaign in the Premiership.

Gomes joined Spurs last summer from PSV Eindhoven and endured a nightmare first half of the season, due to a number of mistakes and lost his place in goal to Carlo Cudicini.  However he won back his place and the Spurs fans saw a much more confident keeper during the latter part of the season.

“I think here at Spurs I have an identification with the supporters that is very good for me. I do feel they respect me,” He told the club’s official monthly magazine, Hotspur.

“I always thought, even at the start of last season – and then regardless of whether I played well or not – that they were behind me and that’s very, very important.

“Football is not about managers and players, it is about the fans. They are the ones who work hard, pay the money to watch us play, and support their club through thick and thin.

“So, here for me at Spurs, I’ve always felt that I have had some kind of special relationship with supporters to that is very important.”

“When the team loses, whether it’s my fault or not, I can’t help but go home and feel really bad. If it has been my fault, I feel especially sad, because I always want to give my best.

“I know how serious everybody is here about success, and I know how important winning is to the players, coaches and fans, and I’m never happy or calm if I know that I have in some way contributed to the team not winning.

“But I know my qualities and I try to stay positive. If I wasn’t doing well, I would always know that I could do better because I think of myself as a goalkeeper that gets points for the team.”
