Former Italian goalkeeper Salvatore Soviero has claimed that Guglielmo Vicario has to prove over the course of this season that he can handle the pressure that comes with being Tottenham’s number one.

Vicario had received rave reviews back in his home country for his consistent showing between the sticks at Empoli over the last two seasons but the goalkeeper now faces the pressure of having to fill Hugo Lloris’ shoes in N17.

The 26-year-old has certainly made a promising start to life at Spurs, demonstrating his shot-stopping prowess as well as his ability to make good decisions under pressure, which is crucial for Ange Postecoglou’s men to play out from the back.

Vicario needs to prove he can handle Premier League

A few days ago, AC Milan goalkeeping coach Luigi Turci, showered praise on Vicario for the way he has seamlessly settled in at Tottenham and suggested that he is now knocking on the door to get into Italy’s starting eleven (Tuttomercatoweb).

However, Soviero believes that the former Empoli man needs to show consistency at the Premier League side to be able to challenge Gianluigi Donnarumma for the Azzuri number one shirt.

The former Genao goalkeeper told Radio Marte (as relayed by Area Napoli) about Vicario: “He must have a year of consecration. Playing at Tottenham is not like doing well at Empoli.

“It’s all a mental question. You have to be able to handle the stress and the tension of an important team: if you make a mistake in London, it’s different.”

Goalkeepers, more than anyone else, are judged on consistency and their ability to do well over the long term. So, Soviero is right in saying that it is too early to make sweeping judgements about Vicario despite his impressive start to the season.
