Alan Hutton has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur could challenge for the Premier League title if they add one more top-class number nine to their squad.
After the departure of Harry Kane, many questioned where the goals would come from for the Lilywhites this season, but that has not proven to be a problem at all for Ange Posteocoglou’s men so far.
Tottenham have scored 20 goals in their first nine matches of the season while conceding just eight, with Son Heung-min thriving as the central striker.
The South Korean has found the back of the net seven times so far this season and Spurs fans will be hoping that he can continue in the same vein and win the Golden Boot as he did in the 2021-22 campaign.
Spurs continue to be linked with strikers ahead of the January transfer window, with reports over recent weeks indicating that the likes of Brentford’s Ivan Toney (Daily Express), Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez (90 min) and Lille’s Jonathan David (TEAMtalk) are on the North London club’s radar.
Who should Spurs sign as their next centre-forward?
Hutton believes that Tottenham would be in with a genuine chance of winning the Premier League title if they sign another top goalscorer in January.
When asked if Postecoglou’s men can keep their run of form going, the former Spurs right-back told Football Insider: “It is an interesting one and I think that is the question that everyone will be asking.
“I think they will do well this season under Ange, I know a lot of people did not know him before Spurs but I obviously knew him really well, he has really transformed that team with the style of play that he has got.
“I think he can continue this way, nothing changes for him, he will always play this style and always wants the same out of the players. The signings have been good, he has got the best out of players that were already there.
“The big thing for me is can he add in January? Can he go and get another number nine so he has got different options? I think that is the missing piece if they really want to go and challenge and win the title but the start has been really quite incredible.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Signing a centre-back and a central midfielder (assuming Hojbjerg leaves) will be Postecoglou’s priorities in January and the club might also be tempted to sign another winger depending on how soon Solomon recovers. I think Tottenham will put off signing a number nine until next summer.
