Of all the young players Tottenham Hotspur have at their disposal, Alfie Devine is perhaps the most exciting and promising talents.

Devine became Tottenham‘s youngest ever player and goalscorer when he made his debut in the FA Cup win over Marine back in 2021 (Daily Mail). He was just 16 years and 163 days old at the time.

Given he is still only 19-years-old now, it’s not surprising Ange Postecoglou decided to loan Devine out for the season to gain valuable experience. His new home for the campaign is with League One side Port Vale.

He’s enjoying life there, too, especially of late. Just within the last week, Devine has scored two goals to take his tally to three goals and two assists in 14 appearances for Vale (Transfermarkt).

Alfie Devine the hero for Port Vale

His latest effort proved decisive in the Carabao Cup encounter against Mansfield, and his manager, Andy Crosby, is clearly very happy with his loan star.

Speaking to the Port Vale Youtube channel, Crosby said: “It was an outstanding goal from Alfie Devine. A young player who’s been with us a while, is earning the trust for his performances and the way he’s conducting himself.”

I’m delighted to see Alfie Devine playing so well for Port Vale and he seems to be becoming something of a talisman for them. If he keeps this up, he will end up starting week in week out, and that is going to hugely benefit his development and be such a boost for Tottenham in the long term, too.

The 19-year-old scored for the second game running yesterday at Field Mill, with the goal proving the difference between Mansfield and Port Vale in a hard-fought League Cup fourth-round tie.

The on-loan Tottenham man picked up the ball in his own half, drove into the space that opened up through the middle of the pitch and unleashed a shot from almost 30 years out that found the bottom corner.

The 19-year-old has made a promising start to his loan spell at the League One outfit and continued that on Sunday as he opened the scoring for the home side.

The attacking midfielder peeled off to the far post and met a knock-down from a corner kick acrobatically to put Andy Crosby’s men 1-0 up but a Sean Long brace meant that Cheltenham walked away with all three points.

Regarded by Tottenham Hotspur as one of the brightest young talents at the club, Alfie Devine is clearly enjoying life in League One since making the temporary switch to Port Vale.

The decision was made to send the 19-year-old out on loan this season rather than keep him in Ange Postecoglou‘s squad. So far, that appears to have been a wise decision.

Devine scored a goal and provided an assist in the win over Oxford United just before the international break earlier this month. He started the next two games, but had to settle for a substitute appearance at the weekend.

The playmaker was back in the starting line-up for Port Vale’s third-round tie with Sutton United in the Carabao Cup, and could well find himself starting at the weekend after a sterling performance.

In the WhoScored match report from the 2-1 win, Devine was given a 7.8 out of 10 rating, the highest of anyone in the game.

Devine provided an assist for his teammate Funso Ojo to score the winning goal in the 83rd minute, but that’s not all.

The Spurs star took three shots, more than anyone on the field, with two of them on target. He also made five key passes throughout the game, again, outdoing everyone else on the pitch.

Devine’s passing accuracy came out at a very respectable 81.4% and he made 78 touches during the game, something only three players can say they bettered.

There is plenty of excitement surrounding Devine at Spurs and the young midfielder showcased exactly why that is with the display he delivered on Saturday.

The 19-year-old started on the bench but it did not take long for him to impact the game after replacing Ethan Chislett in the 68th minute, delivering a perfectly directed free-kick from the right six minutes later, which was guided home by Alex Lacovitti.

Oxford United thought they had secured a point when Greg Leigh turned the ball home on 93 minutes but the away side were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time.

Devine stepped up and dispatched the spot kick with authority, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way, and thus sending the away fans to the Kassam Stadium into pandemonium.

Devine has joined the League One side on a season-long loan in search of more regular minutes, with the likes of James Maddison and Giovani Lo Celso ahead of him in the Spurs pecking order.

The midfielder impressed during pre-season under Ange Postecoglou, looking like one of the sharpest players in the second half against West Ham United in Australia.

However, regular first-team senior football will be a new challenge for Devine, and a big step up from his time playing U21 football in the Tottenham academy.

Port Vale want to nurture Alfie Devine’s development

Speaking about the loan move, both Port Vale manager, Andy Crosby, and the director of football, David Flitcroft, were keen to emphasise the importance of continuing Alfie Devine’s development.

Crosby said (Port Vale): “We are delighted to be welcoming Alfie to the club and we’re looking forward to seeing him develop on and off the pitch with us here at Vale Park.

“He’s an exciting young player who shows a maturity beyond his years on the pitch and that comes as a result of the elite environments he has already experienced with Tottenham and England.

“It’s a testament to the progress the club is making on and off the pitch that top clubs are now trusting us with their best young talent, he will have the support of the staff and the players as we help him to grow.

“He will also have a part to play with our own younger players and is an example of what hard work and dedication to your career can help you achieve.”

Flitcroft added: “Alfie has been on our radar for a long time due to our Head of Recruitment Tommy Johnson knowing him as a young prospect while he was developing at Wigan Athletic.

“We have closely monitored his progress and watched him perform at Tottenham and within the England set up to outstanding levels.

“He is one of our country’s brightest young talents. An outstanding player with an attacking mindset, he has the ability to create and score goals but also has a huge enthusiasm and desire to win the ball back.

At the end of the day, regular minutes are what Alfie Devine needs at the moment more than anything else. Finding a club that matches Ange Postecoglou’s style would also be ideal. Hopefully, this loan spell is more successful than most Tottenham have come up with in recent years.

Alfie Devine joins Port Vale on season-long loan

Alfie Devine will likely slot into the attacking line-up, as he is predominantly a creative midfielder, while also being capable of playing off either wing when needed.

Ange Postecoglou used the Spurs youngster as a right-winger in pre-season and Devine impressed with his 45-minute cameo against West Ham United.

Devine was also part of the Young Lions squad that won the European Under-19 Championship last year, and he will be looking to kick on and earn regular minutes this season away from Spurs.

I’m a little surprised that Devine didn’t get a move to one of the League One sides expecting to fight for the title this season as I want to see him in a very free-flowing, attacking line-up. However, perhaps Spurs have looked at Port Vale’s style and believe it is a good fit for the youngster.
