Former Nottingham Forest defender Gregor Robertson believes that it is only a matter of time before Brennan Johnson replaces Richarlison in Tottenham’s starting eleven.

Ange Postecoglou has started Richarlison on the left in the past few Premier League games and the Brazilian has delivered a few tidy displays, even though he has got on the scoresheet just once so far this season.

Johnson has started just one game for Tottenham since his big-money move from Forest in the summer, with the pacy winger missing a couple of matches due to a hamstring problem.

The 22-year-old made an instant impact after replacing Richarlison on 64 minutes at Selhurst Park, setting up Son Heung-min for Tottenham’s second.

The Wales international headed a cross-field pass from Pedro Porro onto James Maddison’s path before continuing his run into the box receiving the ball and finding Son just a few yards in front of the goal.

Should Johnson replace Richarlison at Spurs?

Robertson believes that we will see Johnson coming into Postecogluo’s starting eleven soon and remarked that it would be difficult for Richarlison to get much game time, given that Tottenham have no European football this season.

The pundit said on The Game Football Podcast: “The only question mark is that Brennan Johnson will get into that starting XI soon, and I think Richarlison needs to do something.

“There’s more competition, there’s no European football, they’re out of the first cup and they’d probably be happy to go out of the second cup if they keep up this form.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I have a feeling that Postecoglou would start with Ricaharlison once again for the clash against Chelsea and use Johnson as an impact substitute off the bench.

The Brazilian has certainly not been terrible on the left. In fact, I thought he had quite a good game against Fulham and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet.

Emerson Royal has revealed that Cristian Romero mocks him and Richarlison every day about Argentina’s Copa America and World Cup wins.

Romero has written his name into Argentine football folklore, helping guide the Albiceleste to their first Copa America win in 18 years back in 2021 and their first World Cup title in 36 years in Qatar last year.

Given the rivalry that exists between Argentina and Brazil, the Tottenham man understandably has bragging rights over his fellow South American teammates.

Richarlison played all 90 minutes in the Copa America final at the Marcana back in 2021 while Emerson came on as a substitute on 76 minutes for Renan Lodi.

Ange de Maria’s 22nd-minute striker proved the difference between the two sides on the night, and Emerson has revealed that his Tottenham teammate does not miss an opportunity to remind him of the victory.

Romero has the bragging rights over Brazil duo

When asked if Romero provokes him and Richarlison, the right-back told ESportes (as relayed by TBR Football): “[Laughs] Every day! He has a tattoo on his calf, of the World Cup and the Copa América, in which I played in the final. So every day he comes by and plays, asking to put cream on his tattoo.”

It was well documented that Romero and Richarlison had a bit of bad blood between them ahead of the Brazilian’s move to Spurs, but the pair quickly put that behind them when the forward made the switch from Everton last year (Daily Mail).

Spurs Web Opinion

It is quite clear that the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking contingent at Tottenham are a tight group but I have no doubt that Romero will not go easy on the likes of Emerson and Royal if he comes up against them in an international fixture again in the future.

Pape Matar Sarr has been quizzed about his Tottenham Hotspur teammates, and when asked who is the funniest member of the squad, he picked Richarlison – who he described as ‘crazy’ – as the joker of the pack.

Things are going pretty well for Tottenham right now, with new manager Ange Postecoglou coming in this summer and transforming the club. The Australian’s brand of attacking football has been adopted by the players very quickly, and the fans are loving it.

Results haven’t been bad either. Spurs are now unbeaten in the first nine league games, with seven wins and two draws, and are currently sitting two points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Players like Heung-min Son and James Maddison are taking the majority of plaudits, with the pair combining for the key goals that have propelled Spurs to the top. But it’s not just goals that are important.

Richarlison is the funniest Spurs player

One player who will probably be happy to hear that is Richarlison, who is still struggling to find the back of the net regularly for Spurs. But, he does come out on top in one area – according to Pape Matar Sarr, the Brazil striker is the funniest of all his teammates.

When asked by Fubo TV who the funniest player in the Spurs squad is, Sarr said: “Richarlison. He’s crazy.”

Given his pigeon-inspired goal celebration, incendiary showboating, and his regular ribbing of teammates (and rivals) on social media, it should come as no surprise that Sarr has picked Richarlison for this particular accolade.

Spurs Web Opinion

I’m going to keep defending Richarlison for as long as he keeps playing with the heart and energy as he did against Fulham on Monday night.

I thought he was absolutely fantastic, the way he chased down every ball, and he was rewarded with a fine assist, too. And yes, he is a very funny guy, too.

Nine games in is pretty much a quarter of the season. To many, 25% is arguably the first substantial percentage of them all. 10% is not to be sniffed at but the difference between 10 and 25 per cent off a garment in a department store – is significant.

Apply this to a Premier League campaign and it means it is a large enough sample size for people to start getting excited – and justifiably so.

Let’s get it right then. A quarter of the way through the 2023-24 Premier League season, Tottenham Hotspur are top of the league. Now the cynical out there, and there are a few, will point to similar seasons where the club had good starts and roll their eyes.

Indeed, last season was the best the club has had in the Premier League. But even the most partisan of fans must admit that the football was not good. We were winning games solely through the brilliance of individuals and that formula does not last – just look at Manchester United this season.

Quite rightly, I believe, I laughed incredulously when some people tried to make a comparison between the manager of month successes of Ange and Nuno. Nuno won his after three 1-0 victories. Now I will not take anything away from him for the City win.

But the subsequent performances over Watford and Wolves were turgid and lucky. Conversely, Ange’s draw and two wins, were jammed full with daring, verve and panache. Above all, there is a plan and a clearly defined way of playing.

Roll on to the ninth game and very little has changed. The team has stayed true to their principles and sit on top of the pile. Unlike those previous campaigns, you cannot point to any lucky points acquired. Admittedly, we were, for once, on the right side of fortune with the Liverpool VAR debacle, but based on the stats for that game, we should have won.

People may argue that we could have won against Arsenal, but conversely, we could have lost quite easily – so a share of the spoils was about right.

Thus, I am left with a dilemma. Do I, in true Big Ange Cult tradition, commit to a wholehearted belief that we could indeed win the league? Or do I err on the side of caution and play down the possibility?

If I wanted to consider the title a viable option, I could draw on the Leicester experience of 2016. Weirdly, there are a number of similarities.

Both sides only had a fixture list consisting of mainly league games. In the make-up of the teams, there are genuine comparisons. A free-scoring forward: for Vardy, read Son. A centre midfielder capable of dictating play and breaking up attacks: Kante/ Bissouma, and a midfield maestro capable of scoring and assisting: Mahrez and Maddison. All of whom played in front of a solid, consistent and well-drilled defence and ‘keeper. Even as I write this, I am tempted to believe.

Can Tottenham really win the Premier League?

Yet I can’t do it – for two reasons.

Firstly, the ability Leicester had that season to put out the same starting eleven almost beggared belief. Too many of our key players have a history of picking up an injury and being out for a period of time: Maddison, Bissouma, Son and Romero have all had significant lay-offs in the last couple of years, and an injury to one or more of those players could prove fatal to any potential title charge.

Indeed, the Fulham gamed served to illuminate quite starkly our lack of depth outside the starting eleven. Without Bissouma, the slick play out from the back was just not possible at the level it has been. Credit to Sarr and Hojbjerg for trying, but they do not have the skillset to receive the ball, spin on a sixpence and release the forwards in a fluid motion.

Not many do. This in turn meant the defenders, Romero in particular, were more profligate on the ball and were trying to force the issue more than they have done recently.

Similarly, if Romero or Van de Ven were to miss games, the drop-off would be significant. The pace, awareness and technique of our defensive duo has been beautiful to behold and has evoked nostalgic memories of Jan and Toby.

However, with Sanchez being sold the back-up looks bare. Ashley Phillips has been commanding a place on the bench of late and I wonder if he is showing something in training that gives Ange the impression that the youngster could be ready to step up.

Even so, he is untried, unknown and ostensibly a shot in the dark. Our full-backs have defied expectations and have performed at a superb level so far this season, but an injury to either, Destiny in particular weakens our team significantly.

Further up the pitch, it has become apparent that James Maddison is the literal and metaphorical heartbeat of this team. There is no one in the squad who comes close to giving us what he offers. The same could be said of Son, who is proving to be ruthless in front of goal in his new central position.

Indeed, the striking options beyond Son and Kulu, don’t scream out ‘consistent high performance’. Brennan Johnson is an exciting prospect, but needs to be given time to bed into the forward three.

The injuries to Perisic and Solomon do not help the cause, the Croatian, in particular, seemed to finally have been clicking into the player we thought we had signed.

Then there is Richarlison. Although I was never convinced that he had the ability to play for a top Premier League team, I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt. Sadly, the previous eighteen months have brutally demonstrated that Tottenham is too much of a step up – especially in this new way of playing that demands high technical ability, vision and subtlety.

All this could be potentially excused if he was able to convert chances. Unfortunately, he is not and it even appeared against Fulham that the opposition were happy for him to be on the ball, whereas Maddison, Kulu and Son were instantly harassed and closed down.

He is just not good enough and Spurs should cash in as soon as possible, because he will only depreciate in value.

The second reason I can’t entertain a title tilt is the quality of opposition. In 2015-16, Tottenham should have won it. Not only did they fail to, they came third in a two-horse race.

There were few viable contenders that year in all fairness. Arsenal were limping towards to end of the Wenger era, Klopp’s time at Liverpool was just in its infancy, and Manchester City and Chelsea were awaiting the arrival of Pep and Conte respectively.

Manchester United, for those that are interested, were in another fruitless transitional phase as they desperately sought (and still seek) to effectively replace Sir Alex Ferguson.

This season the calibre of opposition is much greater. The Manchester City juggernaut shows little sign of abating, despite the De Bruyne injury. At Liverpool, Klopp’s recent reinvention is in full swing and, as much as we hate to accept it, Arsenal are a formidable opponent under Mikel Arteta.

To be finishing ahead of one of these teams would be impressive – all of them, highly unlikely. Add into the mix teams such as Newcastle, Villa and Brighton and it looks like a tough league to be competing in.

I am loving watching Tottenham, but any fans who truly understand football will understand that Spurs supporters saying ‘Why not?’ are saying so with their tongue firmly in their cheek.

Certain outlets and radio shows will try and advance the ‘Tottenham for the title’ talk because it provokes outrage and debate. The truth is that this team need to evolve and improve without the added pressure of being identified as title contenders.

The future is bright and undoubtedly exciting, so let’s just enjoy the ride without worrying about the destination just yet.

Football.London’s Rob Guest has revealed that Ange Postecoglou was not happy with Richarlison’s attempts to showboat during the second half of Tottenham’s win over Fulham on Monday.

Richarlison delivered what was arguably his best performance of the season against the Cottagers, with the Brazilian looking dangerous when he got on the ball and delivering some impressive crosses from the left.

The 26-year-old set up Son Heung-min’s opener in the 36th minute after Tottenham won the ball high up the pitch and he came very close to scoring earlier in the half as his curled effort went just wide off the post, with Bernd Leno rooted to his spot.

Postecoglou was not happy with sloppy Richarlison

However, Richarlison was on the receiving end of Postecolgou’s ire for what he did in the latter stages of the second half.

With the home side 2-0 up at that time, the forward tried to control a cross-field pass with his shoulders, failing to do so and giving the ball away.

Guest revealed that the Spurs head coach made his displeasure clear to the former Everton man during the game.

The journalist said on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast: “Yeah, as you were saying, Ange was not impressed at one point.

“The 71st minute, Hojbjerg had the ball and spread it to Richarlison, it bounced, a bit of showboating, controlling it with his shoulder instead of chesting it.

“Fulham get the ball and Ange is raging at that point, hands in the air, saying what’s going on here, just do the basics.”

Spurs Web Opinion

This is not a one-off as Richarlison has a history of showboating, having attempted something quite similar in the win over Nottingham Forest last season. I am sure that Ange will let the forward know in no uncertain terms that it is not acceptable.

Harry Redknapp is yet to be won over by Richarlison, admitting that he has not been a fan of the forward since his Everton days.

At the start of the season, there were some signs that Richarlison was struggling to cope with the pressure of filling Harry Kane’s shoes following the 30-year-old switch to Bayern Munich.

The Brazilian was unable to find the back of the net and looked a frustrated figure upfront, which is why Ange Postecoglou decided to move Son into the central role.

The decision has worked, with the South Korean having found the back of the net seven times since while Richarlison has also delivered some decent displays off the left.

The 26-year-old, who set up Son’s opener in the 2-0 win over Fulham on Monday night, now has a goal and three assists in his last five Premier League outings (Transfermarkt).

Richarlison still hasn’t won everyone over

However, Redknapp suggested that Tottenham might have to upgrade the former Toffess star in January.

The former Spurs manager told talkSPORT (24/10 8:14 am) about Richarlison: “I think he’s got a bit to do for me still to convince me. To be honest I was like that with him at Everton. There was something about him that didn’t endear him to me that much.

“Listen, if they feel they need to bring someone in on that side and they’ll be looking then they’ll go out and do that.

“Hopefully, he’s turned the corner, he needs a goal or two doesn’t he really? His confidence is key, if you haven’t got the confidence it’s an impossible game.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I thought Richarlison delivered his best performance of the season against Fulham. The 26-year-old used the ball very well, delivered a couple of dangerous crosses into the box and was unlucky not to hit the back of the net with a curled effort in the first half.

Journalist Dean Jones has said that Tottenham Hotspur would only look to sign a striker in January if they manage to offload Richarlison.

Ange Postecoglou made it clear during pre-season that Richarlison is the ideal kind of striker for his system (Sky Sports), with the Australian relying on the 26-year-old to fill Harry Kane’s shoes, which is why the North London club did not replace the number nine in the summer.

However, the Brazilian has struggled to cope with the pressure of being Kane’s successor, with Postecoglou having to move Son Heung-min to the central striker role over recent weeks.

There has been plenty of speculation over recent weeks about Tottenham potentially entering the market for a striker in January.

The likes of Brentford’s Ivan Toney (Daily Express), Lille’s Jonathan David (TEAMtalk), Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez (90 min)  and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen (Fichajes) have all been mooted as targets for the North London club.

Richarlison

Spurs won’t sign a new striker if Richarlison stays

However, Jones believes that Spurs will focus on reinforcing other areas of the pitch in January and would only sign a number nine if they decide to cash in on Richarlison.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “Tottenham have decisions to make in the January window and while most people expect their focus to be on signing a striker I don’t expect that to be the case – I think it will be the defence.

“They still want another centre back and the noises I hear suggest it will be the priority once we get to the end of the year, unless a random curveball has been thrown their way in terms of injury or suspension.

“The only way I see a forward coming in is if Richarlison leaves and there is a big problem around that happening: What is he worth now? At the moment he would struggle to attract anything like the £60m price tag that Spurs met when he was signed from Everton.

“Realistically you would struggle to get much more than half that number given recent form and I just do not see Spurs – from a business perspective – doing such a deal.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not see Tottenham cutting their losses on Richarlison in January. As Jones points out, the striker’s market value at the moment is not reflective of his quality.

Spurs will hope that he can turn around his form and start playing with the kind of arrogance and swagger that he showed at Everton.

Darren Ambrose is not sure whether Richarlison will ever come good at Tottenham and insisted that Ange Postecoglou could soon have no choice but to leave the forward out of the team.

Postecoglou has backed Richarlison from the start of the season, with the Australian being quite complimentary of the Brazilian’s work rate while backing him to come good in front of goal (Goal).

However, the 26-year-old has continued to struggle to hit the back of the net, with Postecoglou moving him to the left and playing Son Heung-min through the middle during the last two matches.

Richarlison missed a couple of gilt-edged chances during Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Luton Town two weeks ago and his performance for the Selecao against Venezuela last week did not inspire much confidence either.

Richarlison

(Photo by JUSTIN TALLIS/AFP via Getty Images)

How long will Postecoglou stick with Richarlison?

Ambrose has now said it will be difficult for Postecoglou to back the striker if he continues missing easy opportunities.

The pundit talkSPORT about Richarlison: “He didn’t play a lot last season. And this season, Ange has started with him. You can see Ange trying to back him and say, ‘look he’s trying to get in the positions, he’ll come good’. I don’t know anymore.

“I backed him and I’ve said ‘he’ll score goals because he does get the chance, when he stops getting the chances that’s when you’ve got to worry’.

“He can’t keep getting the chances and keep missing, because there comes a point – and it has happened – that you get dragged or you don’t play anymore.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Richarlison has two goals and an assist in his last four matches, despite starting just two of those, which is why Postecoglou will continue backing him.

The injuries to Manor Solomon and Ivan Perisic also mean that the Australian does not have too many other options to turn to.

Things are going from bad to worse for Richarlison, as the Tottenham Hotspur man now looks set to be replaced in Brazil’s starting line-up for the next international fixture by Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus.

It has been a tough 18 months for Richarlison since joining Tottenham Hotspur. The 26-year-old arrived with big hopes, but last season in particular was a poor showing, with Richarlison scoring just one league goal and three goals in total throughout the campaign (Transfermarkt).

There appears to be some slight improvement under Ange Postecoglou this season. Richarlison has two goals already this term, and is off the mark in the Premier League far earlier than he was last year (Transfermarkt).

Despite his inconsistent form at club level, Richarlison has always seemed to flourish for Brazil. The Spurs man found success at the World Cup last year, and now has 20 goals in 47 games for his country (Transfermarkt).

Richarlison to be dropped by Brazil

However, it seems Richarlison’s issues are starting to creep into his international standing, as Brazilian outlet Globo claim he is now going to be dropped for the upcoming game against Uruguay.

Brazil boss Fernando Diniz is set to make three changes for the World Cup qualifier, with Richarlison, Danilo, and Guilhermo Arana all looking likely to miss out.

To make matters worse for Richarlison, his Arsenal counterpart, Gabriel Jesus is being lined up to start the game. Richarlison has now failed to find the net for his country since the second-round win over South Korea at the World Cup in December.

Spurs Web Opinion

I really feel for Richarlison, and he’s one of the Spurs players I am most desperate to see succeed. There is such a good player in there, but he’s massively fueled by confidence and that just doesn’t seem to be there right now. He needs a goal or two for Spurs, and soon.

Tony Cascarino has argued that Tottenham Hotspur can be considered genuine title contenders if they replace Richarlison with a top-class number nine during the January transfer window.

To many people’s surprise, Spurs are sitting at the top of the Premier League table after eight games. They certainly deserve to be where they are, having delivered impressive displays so far this season.

Unlike his predecessor Antonio Conte, Postecoglou has not played down talks of a title challenge, remarking that the Tottenham supporters have every right to get carried away and dream big (Optus Sport).

However, pundits have largely written off the Lilywhites as potential title contenders, with the likes of Gary Neville (on his podcast on Sky Sports) and Robbie Savage (TEAMtalk) suggesting recently that Postecoglou’s men will be found out later in the season, due to their lack of squad depth.

What do Spurs need to mount a PL title challenge?

Cascarino believes that Spurs can challenge the likes of City this season but only if they bring in a prolific goalscorer in January.

When asked if Tottenham can mount a serious title challenge, he told talkSPORT: “I think they would be if they can hang in there until Christmas and then make a signing that adds even more to their forward line, that is more natural, I think that’s inevitable.

“Unless Richarlison finds an absolute period to his game where he improves to a much different level, he’s the one that’s vulnerable at the moment in that forward line where you’re thinking there has to be more from him.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think signing a number nine would be Postecoglou’s top priority, with the Australian having enough options in Son, Richarlison and Veliz.

A top-quality centre-back is a much more urgent need as we are potentially one injury to Romero or Van de Ven away from a disaster.

Richarlison’s place in the starting eleven of the Brazilian national side is ‘increasingly under threat’ from Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus, according to Brazilian news outlet Istoe Esportes and Lance

The Tottenham Hotspur striker was once again given a starting berth for Brazil in their World Cup qualifier against Venezuela earlier this week in which they were held to a 1-1 draw with Richarlison once again failing to get himself on the scoresheet.

The 26-year-old has failed to score in his last six matches for the Samba Boys, with his last goal at international level coming in their 4-1 win over South Korea at the World Cup back in December (transfermarkt).

Can Richarlison come good for Spurs?

He has also had a frustrating start to the new Premier League campaign with one goal in eight top flight outings and could have had at least a brace at Luton Town last weekend before he was replaced at half time in the wake of Yves Bissouma‘s red card.

The report claims that Richarlison has not been in good form for ‘some time’ with his place ‘increasingly under threat’ by the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Matheus Cunha.

Richarlison admitted last month that he was planning on seeking “psychological help” on his previous return from international duty after a “turbulent time” off the pitch (Independent).

Brazil are next in action when they face Uruguay in the early hours of Wednesday morning (UK time).

SpursWeb Opinion

Richarlison was brave enough to speak about his issues last month and hopefully he has started to receive the help he needs with his off-field matters.   Hopefully, he can soon get things clicking on the pitch and take some of the goalscoring burden off the shoulders of Heung-min Son.

Unfortunately, it was another evening to forget for Richarlison on Thursday as he put in a poor performance for Brazil against Venezuela.

The number 9 has struggled in front of goal again this season, having netted just once in eight Premier League games for Tottenham, equalling his tally for the entirety of last season (TransferMarkt).

Against Luton Town last weekend, the Brazilian was guilty of missing two sitters in front of goal that would have practically won the game for Spurs within ten minutes.

Instead, Tottenham struggled to find the back of the net and eventually went down to ten men, only just scraping a 1-0 win thanks to a goal from Micky Van de Ven.

Tottenham’s Richarlison struggles for Brazil again

Richarlison was named in the starting XI for Brazil again last night, alongside the likes of Vinicius Jr. and Neymar, but he was unable to find his shooting boots once more.

GloboEsporte gave the Spurs man just a 4.5 out of 10 for his display, with no Brazil player earning a lower score. They said: “Another performance below expectations. He played marked by at least two Venezuelans most of the time. He left the area to get the ball and made execution errors.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Richarlison is a confidence player and just nothing is going his way at the minute. With Brennan Johnson pushing for his place on the left back at Spurs, he needs to find his shooting boots soon. It could be a case of just one game that lights up his season.

The international break is here, and Tottenham Hotspur have a number of players involved with their respective countries. Here’s when and where each player will feature.

Tottenham go into the international break at the top of the Premier League table after an incredible start to the season under Ange Postecoglou.

The Spurs boss has bid farewell to a large portion of his squad for the next couple of weeks, as various players head out to join up with their national squads.

There are Euro 2024 qualifiers, friendly matches, youth squad action, and even some World Cup 2026 qualifiers on the way in the coming days.

On Wednesday, Ben Davies captained Wales to a 4-0 win over Gibraltar at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground. The Spurs defender even opened the scoring on the night, nodding home from three yards out.

Meanwhile, Tottenham youngsters Luca Gunter and Ashley Phillips played the full 90 minutes as England U19s drew 0-0 with Montenegro. Alfie Dorrington was an unused substitute for the game, while Jamie Donley didn’t make the matchday squad.

Fellow youngster, Will Andiyapan, was in action for Wales U19s, playing the full 90 minutes in another 0-0 draw, against Austria.

Tottenham forward Richarlison has spoken to Olympics.com for World Mental Health Day about the pressures that come with wearing the number nine shirt for Brazil.

Richarlison has perhaps not had the success he would have liked since his switch to Spurs during the summer of last year.

Last month, the 26-year-old opened up about his mental health struggles, admitting that he is facing some challenges in his personal life and that he plans to seek ‘psychological help’ (Globo Esporte).

While Richarlison’s numbers for Spurs leave a lot to be desired, the forward has an excellent record for the Selecao, having scored 20 goals in 46 caps for the country.

That is perhaps why he continues to lead the line for Brazil ahead of the likes of Gabriel Jesus.

Having endured the pressure of going into a World Cup campaign as Brazil’s number nine, Richarlison has now said that he understands the kind of expectations that legends such as Ronaldo had to deal with.

(Photo by ANP via Getty Images)

Richarlison wants to leave a legacy with Brazil

The Spurs man is quoted as saying: “I’m very proud to wear the number 9 shirt, especially during the World Cup.

“Now I know the weight that Ronaldo endured and that of other great players who wore this number. Because when you are number 9, you are expected to score goals. You have to be prepared for it because the pressure is enormous.

“Every time you play, you have to give your best, you have to try to score, because it is a very heavy jersey, like the number 10 jersey.

“I want to be remembered as an idol, as someone who honoured the national team jersey. A person who stood out off the field, always willing to help people. I want to be an idol for the Brazilian fans.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is impossible to hate Ricahrlison as he wears his heart on his sleeve, works extremely hard for the team and is a genuine fan of the game who is desperate to do well.

He comes across as the sort of player who needs an arm around the shoulder and I have no doubt that he will be a lot more effective for Spurs once his confidence is up.

Tony Cascarino has said that he cannot remember Son Heung-min delivering as poor a performance as he did against Luton Town last Saturday.

Tottenham should have been out of sight within the first 20 minutes at Kenilworth Road as they missed four gilt-edged chances to take the lead.

The home side somehow managed to hold on for the rest of the half and when Yves Bissouma got his marching orders just before half-time, Tottenham fans would have feared the worst.

However, this team once again demonstrated that they are made of sterner stuff than the Spurs sides of the past, defending resolutely and emerging with a hard-fought 1-0 win.

The goal came from an unlikely source in Micky van de Ven, who found the back of the net for the first time in a Tottenham shirt after some excellent play from James Maddison down the right.

Spurs still have even more room for improvement

Cascarino has pointed to the performances of Son and Richarlison as potential sources of concern for Postecoglou.

The pundit told talkSPORT (8/10 6:40 am): “The thing that stuck out for me yesterday was the determination of the team. If you think about this, they’ve lost Harry Kane. Richarlison they carried, they carrying him at the moment.

“He was off after 45 minutes yesterday and Son was really poor. So you’ve already got three forwards that I just mentioned and they’ve gone on to win a game. Fair play to [Ange] Postecoglou yesterday because he saw the danger, he reacted to it.

“I can’t remember Son playing [that badly], he was just not the Son we know he can be and he’s been brilliant at times this season.

“Richarlison, I don’t know what they do with Richarlison because it feels like he just hasn’t got a good game in him at the moment. He’s just not playing to the level that he would want as a manager.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Richarlison is struggling a bit for confidence at the moment and is snatching at shots as you would expect of a player who is desperate to score. I am hopeful that his luck will change as soon as he finds the back of the net a couple of times and gets his belief back.

Richarlison insists the only big change at Tottenham from last season has been the new philosophy that Ange Postecoglou has brought with him.

Going into last season, many expected Spurs to push on and potentially challenge the big guns on the back of their impressive finish to the 2020-21 season under Antonio Conte.

However, the Lilywhites crumbled in the second half of last season, with Conte even publicly remarking that the Tottenham players were incapable of handling pressure (The Athletic).

The expectations in N17 were quite low coming into this season, with many expecting it to be a transitional campaign under Ange Postecoglou.

However, Spurs have started exceptionally and there appears to be a togetherness and comradery among the players which was missing for large parts of last season.

Richarlison hints at major change coming from Ange

Richarlison has rejected the idea that there has been a change in mentality, insisting that the only thing that is different is the ideas that Postecoglou has brought with him.

When asked whether it’s a surprise that Tottenham are competing to be on top of the table, the striker told ESPN Brasil (as translated by Sport Witness): “I don’t think so, because the coach came with a very good philosophy and we, the players, bought his idea.

“So I think his style of playing favours us as players. I think we’ve been doing a great job. I believe that almost nothing has changed about players from last year. Only the philosophy really changed and we bought his ideas.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that the personnel changes have made a big difference, with the likes of Udogie, Van de Ven, Maddison and Vicario hitting the ground running.

Having said that, our squad last season was nowhere near as bad as Conte made it look, with the Italian conveniently shifting the blame onto the players when his tactics were not working.

Alasdair Gold has revealed that there was no love lost between Richarlison and Jurgen Klopp on Saturday, with the duo having a go at one another on multiple occasions through the 90 minutes.

It was a high-octane affair on Saturday, with plenty of challenges flying in from both sides, and the away side receiving a total of seven yellow cards and two reds.

Emotions were running high among both sets of players, particularly given some of the controversial decisions that were made.

Richarlison, who delivered a typically battling display and set up Son Heung-min’s opener, was unsurprisingly in the thick of some of the altercations.

Gold revealed that the 26-year-old and Klopp engaged in multiple arguments and repeatedly gesticulated at each other, including after Curtis Jones’ sending-off.

There is no love lost between Richarlison and Klopp

The journalist explained that Ange Posteocoglou had to intervene at one point to ensure that the striker did not get into any trouble.

Gold said on his YouTube channel: “One player who was certainly not feeling sorry for Liverpool’s rotten luck was Richarlison. I don’t know if it was the Everton background in him but my goodness was he going at [Jurgen] Klopp.

“One moment in the first half after an innocuous foul, he and Klopp were just going back and forth. And Richarlison kind of turned to him and just started going, ‘Yeah, yeah’, as if to say, yeah whatever mate.

“And then after the Curtis Jones red card, Richarlison said something again and came over and was having a pop back and forth at Klopp again and [Ange] Postecoglou very quickly told him to get away.

“As if to say, don’t get to say don’t get yourself drawn into something stupid that you end up getting disciplined for as well. Ultimately I guess Richarlison had the last laugh.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Klopp has a history of trying to put pressure on the officials in an effort to influence the decisions. Given that Ange is not the sort of person to engage his counterpart, it is perhaps not a bad thing that Richarlison stood up to the Liverpool boss.

Gary Neville commented on Richarlison’s performance against Liverpool at the weekend, and said that although the Tottenham man is doing well, he does look ‘awkward’ playing on his weaker foot.

While still not perfect, Richarlison is having a far better time at Tottenham Hotspur under Ange Postecoglou right now.

Richarlison has two goals so far this season – one in the Carabao Cup defeat to Fulham, and a dramatic equaliser in the 2-1 win over Sheffield United last month (Transfermarkt).

The Brazilian picked up a valuable assist in the victory over Liverpool at the weekend, playing the ball into the box for Heung-min Son after a perfect through ball from James Maddison.

It’s a stark contrast to last season, where Richarlison struggled with poor form and injuries, finishing the campaign on just three goals and having to wait until April for his first Premier League goal (Transfermarkt).

Neville spots Richarlison’s weakness

Richarlison was handed a place in the starting line-up against Liverpool on Saturday, and put in a commendable shift to lead the line, press high, and battle for his team.

Despite a solid start to the season for Richarlison and a good performance at the weekend, Gary Neville has picked up on something the Spurs man could improve on.

Neville told Sky Sports Premier League (30/09/23 at 6:55 pm): “He’s done okay out there Richarlison. He looks a little awkward on his left foot, but still providing the danger.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I know Richarlison is a striker and he will always be judged on the goals he scored, but if you look past his numbers, he is doing an incredible job for Spurs this season.

His work rate is top drawer and he causes all kinds of problems for defenders. A couple more goals and the confidence will start flowing and then we should see a very different Richarlison.

It is also worth mentioning that he put in a devilish ball across the face of the goal towards an onrushing Kulusevski with his weak foot against Liverpool.

Richarlison had admitted that going public with his off-field issues was a huge weight off his shoulders and he is now keen to work hard to force himself into Tottenham’s starting eleven.

Richarlison admitted during the international break earlier this month that he was struggling with problems in his personal life and that he plans to seek ‘psychological help’ (Globo Esporte).

Since then, Ange Postecoglou has come out in full support of the forward, stating that he will get all the help he needs from professionals at the club (The Times).

Richarlison feels he is back on the right path

The Tottenham players have also got behind the striker as evidenced by their reaction after his goal and assist against Sheffield United (Football.London).

Richarlison has now revealed that everyone at Spurs ’embraced’ him when he went public with his struggles and remarked that he is focused on working hard on the training pitch now that he has got things off his chest.

The 26-year-old told ESPN Brasil: “That outburst was a weight off my shoulders. After that, I think things got better, so much so that I came back here happy, the group embraced me here.

“I came back scoring goals, giving assists. It was good to get that off my chest. I’m a guy who keeps things to myself and, at that moment, I spoke from the heart.

“What I was suffering from wasn’t on the pitch, in training, it was the bad people around me. Thank God those people are gone, it’s all going to get better. Now I have to train as hard as I can this week to be a starter (against Liverpool).”

ESPN also pointed out that the Tottenham man recently stopped working with Renato Velasco, the agent who has represented him from the start of his career.

Spurs Web Opinion

It has been great to see how everyone, including the players, coaches, Spurs fans and even neutrals and pundits have got around Richarlison after he went public about his struggles. That is an indication of the progress we have made on the topic of mental health over the past few years.

Former Arsenal star turned pundit, Ian Wright, has pinpointed Richarlison as a key threat facing the Gunners ahead of the North London derby this Sunday.

All eyes will be on the Emirates Stadium this weekend as the fierce rivalry between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal reaches boiling point once more.

Both sides go into the game in great form. In fact, both Spurs and Arsenal are unbeaten in the league so far, and both have 13 points on the board, with the Lilywhites ahead of the Gunners on goal difference only.

Ange Postecoglou has been getting the best out of his players since taking over the Spurs job this summer, and one player to benefit from that has been Richarlison.

The striker struggled for form last season, scoring just three goals throughout the 2022/23 campaign (Transfermarkt).

Richarlison was the star of the show last weekend for Spurs, however, coming off the bench to pull his side level against Sheffield United late in stoppage time. He then provided the assist for Dejan Kulusevski to score the winner two minutes later.

Richarlison can cause Arsenal problems

Speaking to Optus Sport about the upcoming game, Ian Wright admitted he is worried about what Richarlison could do against Arsenal on Sunday, and said the Brazilian will be difficult to handle.

He said: “You’re looking at a team now that is very confident and a player up front who, if he can now throw in 10-12 goals which he’s easily capable of doing Richarlison, now his head’s clear and everything – they’re going to cause people problems.

“He seems to have stopped the noise in his head, the manager’s given him time out of it and brought him in and eased him into and now he feels more at ease.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I would love nothing more than to see Richarlison perform on Sunday and score the winning goal. I will take any kind of win, but for him to be the difference in this big game would be massive for his confidence and would be a real statement about the kind of season he could have this year.
