Yves Bissouma admitted that being sidelined over the last three months was very difficult and he is now determined to do all he can to help the team to finish the season strong.
There was plenty of excitement among Spurs fans when the club secured Bissouma from Brighton last summer but things have not gone according to plan for the midfielder in his first season in North London.
The 26-year-old struggled to get starts under his belt in the first couple of months and just when he started to get a regular run in the team, he fractured his ankle in February which put him out of action for three months.
That means that the Mali international has started less than a quarter of Tottenham’s Premier League matches this season (Transfermarkt).
Bissouma returned to action in the clash against Villa Park on Saturday, replacing Oliver Skipp just after the hour mark.
The midfielder produced a promising cameo but could not stop the Lilywhites from falling to a 2-1 loss.
Speaking to the club’s official website after his come back, the midfielder said: “To be honest, I’m not satisfied because we wanted to win this game. It was important for us.
“We lost the game in some details, like the start, after seven minutes they scored the first goal.
“The second half was better, and we will try to continue like that.”
When asked how it felt to be back out on the pitch, the former Seagulls star said: “I’m really happy to be back, but sad because we didn’t win the game, and the result means everything.
“The last three months were not easy for me, but I worked really hard every day to come back stronger.
“I feel good physically and I will try to help the team how I can for the last two games.
“I’m ready to play and, if the coach needs me, I’m here to help my team-mates.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It was quite unfortunate that Bissouma’s injury coincided with Bentancur’s as it meant that we lacked a midfielder who could handle the ball in tight areas and retain possession.
That clearly has hastened the side’s collapse and Antonio Conte’s subsequent exit.
