Rodrigo Bentancur has admitted that he did not expect to complete a move to Tottenham Hotspur during the January transfer window.
The midfielder swapped Juventus for north London in a deal worth an initial €19 million (£15 million) which is payable over a three-year period with a further €6 million (£5 million) in performance-related add-ons.
The 24-year-old revealed in an interview with Sky Sport Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio that he found out about the switch while on international duty with Uruguay.
Bentancur was missing from Tottenham’s squad for yesterday’s 4-0 win at Leeds United after the recent recruit picked up an injury during the first half of Wednesday evening’s loss at Burnley and had to be replaced by Harry Winks.
The player revealed that he is hoping to get the club back in the top four and secure Champions League qualification.
He said: “I’m doing quite well, but I still have a lot to do,”
“I didn’t expect to move in January, I found out in the national team, and I was very surprised and happy.
“Personal goal? To improve every day, to give my best, and to help my teammates to get this team into the top four, into the Champions League.”

Bentancur has had an impressive start to life at Tottenham having shown his ability to create space on the ball and is certainly comfortable with it at his feet. In fairness, both Winks and Hojbjerg performed well at Elland Road with each of them playing key roles in creating opportunities.
Winks created the move which led to Matt Doherty’s opener while Hojbjerg played a brilliant ball over the Leeds defence for Kane to net his side’s third.
