Antonio Conte has revealed that he thinks Rodrigo Bentancur’s best position is in a midfield two, which is where he featured after coming off the bench against Southampton.

The Italian boss acknowledged that Bentancur had played in a three at times for both Juventus and Uruguay, but he sees his preferred role coming in a two.

Bentancur is yet to make his full Tottenham debut since joining the club from Juventus in January, but has already appeared in the FA Cup and Premier League.

The midfield made a bright cameo off the bench in Spurs’ 3-1 win over Brighton in the cup, including some neat footwork on the edge of his own box, while he looked extremely composed and impressive in the second-half against Southampton, despite the defeat.

Conte has primarily played with a central midfield two between Oliver Skipp, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Harry Winks this season, but it appears Bentancur will add a new option.

When asked about his best position, Conte said (Football London): “He can play, I think the best position for him is to play with two midfielders but sometimes with the national team and also with Juventus, he also played in a three but in my mind, the perfect suit for him is to play with two midfielders.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

We have only had a brief glimpse into Bentancur’s game, but it definitely seems as though his all-around attributes lend themselves to a two more than a three. I think Spurs need a more creative midfield option to consistently play a three in the Premier League.
