Rodrigo Bentancur suffered World Cup heartbreak this week with Uruguay as they were knocked out of the group stages due to a late goal.
Heading into the final match of Group H, only one of Bentancur’s Uruguay and Heung-min Son’s South Korea could make it into the knockouts. For almost 90 minutes, that looked as though it would be the former, with the South American side beating Ghana by two goals to nil.
However, in the dying seconds of South Korea’s match against Portugal, Son picked the ball up in his own half and ran the length of the pitch before threading in Hwang Hee-chan for a last-gasp winner, sending the Asian side through on goals scored.
While it was jubilation for Son and his teammates, it was heartbreak for Bentancur and his compatriots as news trickled in from across Qatar. The Spurs star, who has been in superb form this season, took to Instagram to react to the heartbreaking result.
He wrote: ‘It really hurts to be left out of a World Cup after a win like yesterday. It hurts that we couldn’t follow our way into this important competition despite giving it our all in every minute of every game.
‘We will continue to work hard with one goal: to come back stronger to take Uruguay where it deserves.’
Spurs Web Opinion:
Bentancur certainly didn’t deserve to be dumped out of the tournament early, as he put in some sensational performances for Uruguay. However, from a Spurs point of view, he has played so much football over the past six months, a rest will do him some good in the long run.
