Alasdair Gold has said that Tottenham Hotspur cannot afford to sell Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in January as they will be without both Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr during the African Cup of Nations.

Hojbjerg’s only start for Tottenham this season came in the win over Fulham last week, with the Dane coming into the team for the suspended Bissouma and demonstrating that he can be counted upon.

The experienced midfielder dropped back to the bench for the clash against Crystal Palace as the Mali international returned, and with Rodrigo Bentancur also making his long-awaited comeback in the game, the former Saints man will not find it easy to get any starts over the coming weeks and months.

In fact, it was reported by CalcioMercato (via Football Italia) a couple of days ago that Hojbjerg’s representatives have already reached out to Juventus and offered the player to the Old Lady as the 28-year-old is keen on leaving Spurs in search of regular game time.

The report added that the Serie A giants are now evaluating several options before deciding which midfielder to pursue in January.

Do Tottenham need to keep Hojbjerg around?

Gold believes that even if Hojbjerg pushes to leave, Spurs cannot afford to sell him in January given that they will be without two key players during the month.

The journalist said on Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast: “I think the idea was and unless they’re really still flying at that point [he] would want to move on in January for regular football.

“But I just don’t think you can let him go. With Bissouma and Sarr heading off to the African Cup of Nations I don’t think you can afford to let Hojbjerg go. I think he’s shown his worth once again.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I believe that Posteocglou will insist on bringing a replacement through the door before allowing Hojbjerg to leave. The Australian certainly would not want to be left with Skipp and Bentancur as his only two centre-midfielder options during the AFCON.

According to CalcioMercato (as relayed by Football Italia), despite being offered the chance to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Juventus are now considering other alternatives, including Lazio’s Lazar Samardzic.

The report states that Hojbjerg is keen to leave Spurs in search of regular game time and that the Dane’s representatives have already contacted the Old Lady and offered them the player.

However, the Serie A giants are said to be ‘making assessments’ at the moment and are considering different options to reinforce the middle of the park, with the Tottenham man not being the only name on their wishlist.

Juventus may look away from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

In fact, it is suggested that Juve might decide to go for a midfielder who provides more output in terms of goals and assists, which is why they might be tempted to sign Samardzic over Hojbjerg.

This report comes a little over a week after Gazzetta Dello Sport (via  Sport Witness) claimed that Tottenham’s €30m (£26m) asking price for the former Saints star is too high for the Bianconeri, who trying to get the North London club to soften their stance on the 28-year-old.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is clear that Hojbjerg was not too happy that his agent failed to secure a summer move for him, which is presumably why he changed representation.

It appears as if the midfielder’s new representatives are working overtime ahead of the January transfer window to try and find a suitable destination for the Dane.

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on signing Hakan Calhanoglu from Inter Milan, but the Italian side are thought to want a fee of €50m (£43.6m) for a player deemed to be ‘indispensable’ by Simone Inzaghi.

There has been mass changes made in the Tottenham midfield this season since Ange Postecoglou‘s arrival at the club.

Yves Bissouma is back to his best, and has been partnered in central midfield by Pape Matar Sarr, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg slipping down the pecking order.

There is also Rodrigo Bentancur back from injury, and Oliver Skipp fighting for a place in the side, and yet rumours persist that Spurs are looking for new midfielders.

Granted, both Bissouma and Sarr are likely to be absent in the New Year, due to the African Cup of Nations. Meanwhile, Hojbjerg is thought to be ready to leave the club in January (Tipsbladet as relayed by Sport Witness).

How can Spurs sign Calhanoglu?

In a new report from InterLive, it is said Spurs “can try” to sign Inter Milan star Hakan Calhanoglu at the end of the season to bolster their midfield – but only on two conditions.

First of all, the Lilywhites would need to qualify for the Champions League in order to persuade the Turkish midfielder to join them.

Additionally, Hojbjerg would need to leave the club before Spurs would “give a serious thought” to signing Calhanoglu.

Apparently, it won’t be simple to get the signing over the line, though, as Inter Milan currently regard Calhanoglu as “indispensable.” It is said any club hoping to lure the player away would need to pay €50m (£43.6m).

Spurs Web Opinion

Calhanoglu is a quality player and would be a step up from Hojbjerg. He would offer something different, too, which it seems Postecoglou wants from his midfielders, which is comfortability in possession and a desire to move the ball forward.

According to the print edition of Tipsbladet (as relayed by Sport Witness), unless things change drastically over the next two months, Tottenham Hotspur will cash in on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in January.

Hojbjerg has proven to be a valuable squad option for Ange Postecoglou this season, often coming on as a substitute to help the Lilywhites see out wins.

The 28-year-old was handed his first Premier League start of the season last week against Fulham owing to Yves Bissouma’s suspension and he delivered a solid display, demonstrating that he can be counted upon.

Hojbjerg is expected to leave Spurs in January

However, Tipsbladet have said that Hojbjerg is simply ‘too good a footballer to just be a reserve’ even for a club like Spurs, who are currently sitting at the top of the Premier League table.

The outlet adds that the Dane is ‘pointing towards a change’ in the winter if his situation at Tottenham does not change over the next two months.

The report adds that barring ‘unexpected developments’, the former Southampton man will no longer be a Spurs player in January.

However, it is said that the challenge would be to ‘find a solution in a good and constructive way’ that suits all parties, with various clubs around Europe interested in the Tottenham man.

Spurs Web Opinion

Any slim chance of Hojbjerg forcing himself into Tottenham’s starting eleven has now completely diminished following the return of Rodrigo Bentancur. So, I think the writing is on the wall for the Dane in January.

Reflecting on the win against Crystal Palace tonight, Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou had positive things to say about three of his substitutes, praising the impact of Brennan Johnson, Emerson Royal, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

It wasn’t easy, but Tottenham will go into the weekend with a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League table after defeating Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park.

Ange Postecoglous side dominated possession throughout, but were unable to turn that control of the ball into clear-cut chances in the same manner as they have so far this season.

The high press which has become a Spurs trademark was to thank for the first goal, as James Maddison pressured the Palace defenders into mistakes that ultimately led to a Joel Ward own goal.

Maddison then joined forces with Brennan Johnson, who came on as a substitute, with the pair weaving through the Palace back line to set up Heung-min Son for yet another goal for the Tottenham captain.

A late goal from Jordan Ayew piled on the pressure in injury time, but Spurs were able to hold on and grab all three points tonight.

Ange happy with his Tottenham subs vs Palace

While Brennan Johnson arguably had the biggest impact of all the players to come off the bench tonight, Postecoglou has also recognised Emerson Royal and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s influence on the game, with the pair replacing Ben Davies and Yves Bissouma, respectively.

In his post-match press conference (via Football.London), Postecoglou said: “Brennan was great. He’s had to be patient as he’s had a couple of setbacks obviously so we haven’t really seen him in any consistent game time or training time but the last couple of weeks he’s worked hard at training.

“I thought all the subs who came on… I thought Pierre helped us get control of midfield, I thought Emerson at left-back was outstanding. Those kinds of things are helping us at the moment, the guys coming on and helping us see out games.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Brennan Johnson should be delighted with his performance today. I thought he came on and really wanted to make things happen, and his hard work paid off with an assist.

Emerson was brilliant in a position he doesn’t normally play, and put in a really good shift. And Hojbjerg was his usual, sturdy self, and is proving to be a player we can really depend on to manage the game.

Journalist James Maw has suggested that the Tottenham centre-backs were hesitant to pass to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg on a couple of occasions against Fulham on Monday night.

Yves Bissouma has undoubtedly been one of Tottenham’s best performers this season and his ability to handle the ball in tight areas and to carry the ball out defence has been crucial to Ange Postecoglou’s side.

The Mali international was always going to be a big miss against Fulham after receiving a red card against Luton Town but to Hojbjerg’s credit, he slotted seamlessly into midfield, helping the home side emerge 2-0 winners on the night.

Postecoglou singled out the Dane for praise in his post-match press conference, remarking that the experienced midfielder was quite calm on the ball (Football.London).

Yves Bissouma

Spurs changed their style slightly for Hojbjerg

However, Maw felt that Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven were not as confident playing the ball to Hojbjerg as they are giving it to Bissouma.

The journalist said on The Athletic’s The View From The Lane Podcast: “Yeah, there were a couple of moments when you could see the centre-backs looking to play out and then realise it was [Pierre-Emile] Hojbjerg and then kind of reshape and then play a slightly different pass.

“But yeah, he was incredibly good and I think it sends a kind of message to those other fringe players that you may not play a game for or start a game for however many weeks but you will get an opportunity eventually and it is possible to play very well.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Hojbjerg’s strengths are different to Bissouma’s and the Dane is obviously not as press-resistant as the Mali international, which might have been why Romero and Van de Ven did not want to put him in a tight spot.

Having said that, the 28-year-old’s decision-making on the ball, including the timing and choice of his passes, as well as his positioning off the ball, are arguably superior to Bissouma’s.

Football.London reporter Lee Wilmot has praised the performance Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg delivered on Monday against Fulham, revealing that the midfielder is not sure what the future holds for him.

Hojbjerg is not used to warming the bench, having captained Southampton before his move to Tottenham where he became one of the mainstays in the Spurs midfield in his first three years in North London.

The 28-year-old is also one of the leaders of the Danish national side, which is why he might have found it difficult to adjust to the bit-part role he has had under Ange Postecoglou this season.

Hojbjerg was handed his first Premier League start of the season on Monday since Yves Bissouam was suspended for the clash and showed Postecoglou that he can be relied upon, with the Australian singling out the Dane for praise after the 2-0 win (Football.London).

Hojbjerg is none the wiser on Tottenham future

There has been plenty of speculation over the last few weeks linking the experienced midfielder with a move to Juventus (Calciomercato.it), but Wilmot believes that the player does not know yet where he will be in January.

The journalist said on Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast: “Hojbjerg showed what a class individual he is really. He came in and gave it 100% even though he doesn’t know if his long-term future is at the club.

“He’s aware that Bissouma is the favoured man for Ange Postecoglou in that role. I can’t fault Hojbjerg and his professionalism.”

Spurs Web Opinion

If Postecoglou did not value Hojbjerg’s quality and professionalism, the Australian would not have brought on the Dane consistently as an impact substitute in the second half this season.

Ange clearly thinks that the 28-year-old has a lot to give but the reality is that he is simply not going to start ahead of either Sarr or Bissouma at the moment.

Gary O’Neil praised Micky van de Ven and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for the roles they played respectively in Tottenham’s two goals against Fulham.

Tottenham fashioned several chances throughout the game, particularly in the first half, with the Cottagers struggling to cope with the home side’s movement and combination play.

However, both of the Lilywhites’ goals came as a result of them winning the ball high up the pitch, with Fulham caught out trying to play out from the back.

It was Van de Ven who intercepted the ball ahead of the first goal before playing it to Richarlison, who in turn found Son Heung-min, who took a touch to wrong-foot the defender before curling it into the top corner.

Hojbjerg won the ball ahead of the second goal and played it first-time to Son, who found James Maddison, with the attacking midfielder keeping his composure to slot home past Bernd Leno.

Gary O’Neil was impressed by Tottenham duo

O’Neil noted how Ven de Ven’s and Hojbjerg’s first passes when Tottenham won the ball back were perfectly weighted.

The Wolves boss said on Sky Sports MNF: “I think the key to both of the goals was the quality on the first pass. Jamie touched on the one at half-time, when the centre back comes in and cushions it in lovely with his left foot, and then the second one, Hojbjerg stepping in, fantastic first pass into the nine and no time for Fulham to recover.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is quite noticeable that Tottenham have worked quite a lot on their pressing structure and how to maximise three vs three (or similar situations) in the training ground. We have looked quite deadly when winning the ball back in the final third.

Ange Postecoglou has admitted that Yves Bissouma was disappointed in himself for picking up a second yellow against Luton Town for simulation.

Spurs seemed to be in a positive rhythm during the first half at Kenilworth Road, creating chance after chance, albeit without finding the back of the net.

However, on the stroke of half-time, Bissouma attempted to weave his way into the box and chose to take a dive over a Luton defender’s leg, earning him his marching orders and putting Spurs on the back foot.

Fortunately, the Lilywhites were able to come out of the away match with all three points thanks to a James Maddison moment of magic and Micky Van de Ven’s first goal for the club.

Bissouma was apparently relieved that his teammates had managed to spare his blushes, but Postecoglou thinks he will have taken a fair few lessons from the experience.

Bissouma will learn from his red card at Spurs

On how Bissouma reacted to the red card, Postecoglou said (Football London): “In terms of Biss himself, he was disappointed but his teammates got the job done and he’s appreciative of that and he saw the team win without him. All these things are lessons.

“As I keep saying, I don’t need to keep reinforcing anything, the players are well aware of consequences of actions & I don’t need to make any further point on that.”

On the Bissouma vs Hojbjerg competition, Ange added: “It’s no different to any other week. They’re not really dilemmas, just choices that people in my position have to make and I’ve always made those decisions pretty simply and cleanly about what I think we need.

“Tomorrow night we’ll start with a certain group of players and finish with another and it’s about trying to get the job done. When that game is done, we’ll look to the next one.

“It’s good to have Biss available, he’s been a big part of what we’re doing. The team did well the other night so that should make us stronger.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

I am in two minds about whether it makes sense to start Bissouma tomorrow. Part of me would rather Hojbjerg played to guarantee that Bissouma is available for the Chelsea match. One yellow against Palace and he would be suspended yet again.

The Athletic have revealed that some at Tottenham Hotspur felt that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was too close to Jose Mourinho and Antoni Conte.

It was Mourinho who brought Hojbjerg to Spurs from Southampton back in 2020, with the midfielder being a mainstay in the club’s starting eleven for the past three seasons.

However, things have changed for the Dane under Ange Postecoglou, who has preferred a central midfield pairing of Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr behind James Maddison.

The 28-year-old was handed his first start of the Premier League season against Fulham on Monday as Bissouma was suspended, with Postecoglou praising the player for the way he handled that ball in Tottenham’s 2-0 win (Football.London).

Hojbjerg himself admitted after the game that it felt ‘amazing’ to get the first 90 minutes of the season under his belt and called on his teammates to continue building on their momentum by taking one game at a time (The Independent).

Hojbjerg was Conte and Mourinho’s favourite

While discussing how the former Saints star’s situation at Spurs has changed this season, The Athletic have now pointed out the close relationship the player had with Postecoglou’s predecessors.

In fact, the publication asserts that some at Tottenham felt that Hojbjerg was close to Mourinho and Conte in ‘a borderline sycophantic way’.

Spurs Web Opinion

Postecoglou has demonstrated that he trusts Hojbjerg, with the Australian bringing him on as a substitute on seven occasions this season before the clash against Fulham.

Although the Dane has different characteristics to Bissouma, he has showcased that he is technically good enough to play in Ange’s system

The print edition of Gazzetta Dello Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness) have suggested that Juventus view Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as a ‘quick fix’ for their problems in the middle of the park.

The report states that the Serie A giants are keen to make a couple of signings in January to ‘raise their level’, with Hojbjerg being one of the names on their wishlist.

The Spurs man is one of a ‘couple of coups’ that the Old Lady are trying to score in the winter transfer window following the suspensions of Paul Pogba and Nicolo Fagioli.

Hojbjerg is seen as a Juventus midfield quick-fix

The outlet adds that the 28-year-old is among ‘different options’ that Juve are looking at but he is seen as one of the quick fixes available on the market.

Finally, the report also points out that Hojbjerg played 90 minutes for Tottenham in their win over Fulham on Monday night, which is why it might not be straightforward to convince Spurs to part ways with the player when the transfer window reopens.

Spurs Web Opinion

Based on the recent updates from Italy, it very much sounds like Juve are lining up several different midfield targets rather than putting all their eggs in the Hojbjerg basket.

I still feel that the Dane is more likely to end up at Atletico Madrid rather than Turin as the La Liga side are more likely to meet Spurs’ asking price.

According to the print edition of Gazzetta Dello Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness), Juventus have begun work to try and get Tottenham to soften their stance on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

While it has been widely reported over the last month that Juve are eyeing a move for Hojbjerg in January, Calciomercato.it explained last week that a deal for the player would prove difficult to pull off for the Serie A giants.

The outlet stated that Spurs are not likely to sanction a loan move and that Old Lady might not want to pay the kind of fee that the North London club are expected to demand, given the player’s age.

Additionally, it was alleged that Massimiliano Allegri’s men could face competition for the 28-year-old’s signature from Atletico Madrid.

Juve have started work on Hojbjerg haggling

If Gazzetta’s latest update is to be believed, Juve have already started work on the deal, with the Bianconeri alleged to have made ‘contact’ over a deal for Hojbjerg.

The publication asserts that Tottenham are demanding around €30m (£26m) for the player, which is why the Italian side are now trying to soften the Premier League side’s stance.

Spurs Web Opinion

Even though Hojbjerg will have just 18 months left to run on his contract in January, I do not think Tottenham would really consider bids lower than £25m for a player of the Dane’s experience and quality. Spurs will be hoping a bidding war emerges for the player’s services.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has admitted that he was delighted to get 90 minutes of football under his belt against Fulham on Monday.

Hojbjerg, who has been a fixture in Tottenham’s midfielder over the past three seasons, has fallen down the pecking order this year, with Ange Postecoglou preferring a centre-midfield pairing of Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr behind James Maddison.

With Bissouma suspended against the Cottagers after his red card against Luton Town, the Dane made his first Premier League start of the campaign against Marco Silva’s men.

The 28-year-old delivered a solid performance, putting in some excellent defensive work and handling possession impressively, with Postecolgou praising the experienced midfielder for his display (Football.London).

Hojbjerg loved being back in the Tottenham XI

Hojbjerg stated that he enjoyed being involved but admitted that the team were a little sloppy on the ball in the second half.

He told The Independent: “Honestly it felt amazing to play. It was really nice to play. It felt really good. First half I thought we played some good football.

“I think we had to score more than the one and second half we lost a bit of intensity. We let Fulham back into it but especially first half I thought was strong.

“It is up to the coach to analyse (second half) now and to show us a bit what we needed. Personally, I felt the quality on the ball dropped a bit, but again we always know the first game back from the internationals is always a challenge.”

The Denmark international called on his Spurs teammates to ‘live with the pressure’ of being top of the table, remarking that the Lilywhites need to take it one game at a time.

He added: “I think it is game by game and it is important to try to improve. Improve every single week and try to see where we can take it. I think you have to live with the pressure, assume the pressure but again it is about improving and looking at yourself week in, week out.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Hojbjerg demonstrated against Fulham that he is more than good enough in possession to play in Postecoglou’s system and that he can be relied upon when there are any injuries.

However, I do not see him starting ahead of either Sarr or Bissouma as the Senegalese and the Malian have been exceptional this season.

Ange Postecoglou has hailed Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for stepping up to the plate and delivering a top performance against Fulham in the absence of Yves Bissouma.

Bissouma has become a vital cog in the Tottenham midfield, with his ability to win back possession and carry the ball out from defence proving vital for the Lilywhites so far this season.

So, the Mali international was going to be a big miss for Spurs against the Cottagers, with Postecoglou having to hand Hojbjerg his first start of the season.

The experienced Dane, who has delivered some steady cameos off the bench this season, ensured that the home side did not Bissouma, sweeping impressively in front of the backline, pressing the ball smartly and handling possession well.

Hojbjerg filled Yves Bissouma’s shoes vs Fulham

Postecoglou admitted that Hojbjerg’s showing in the middle of the park was key to Spurs coming away with a 2-0 win against Marco Silva’s men.

The Tottenham head coach told Football.London: “I thought Pierre was good. He’s been good in every game he’s played for us. I’ve put him on in some difficult situations and he’s handled them really well. He’s very experienced and I thought he handled it well tonight.

“I thought in the first half in particular we stayed calm on the ball and had some good tempo. Like I said I thought our pressing was outstanding all game and I thought he was a big part of that.

“He made interceptions for both goals and yeah it was important to have him in there. His experience coming in because Biss has been very important for us and in such a crucial role but I thought he was excellent.”

The Australian admitted that his side will be reliant on the squad players chipping in and contributing throughout the season.

When asked how important it is to have reliable options to turn to, the 58-year-old responded: “Yeah it’s vital. Obviously, you’re not going to have the same eleven every game, that’s for sure. But like I said it’s not like Pierre hasn’t been involved.

“He’s been very influential. Every player wants to start but for me, it’s not just the players who start but it’s about those who contribute, and he’s been a contributor all year.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Hojbjerg might not have Bissouma’s press resistance or his athleticism but the Dane has different attributes that are useful, including his positioning and his decision-making in possession. The 28-year-old showed yesterday that he is more than capable of playing in Postecoglou’s system.

Former Tottenham striker Fernando Llorente has urged Juventus to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from the North London club.

Multiple Italian outlets have claimed over the last couple of weeks that Juve are plotting a January move for Hojbjerg, with the Italian club’s hierarchy said to be ‘fascinated’ by the midfielder’s profile (Gazzetta dello Sport).

However, Calciomercato.it explained a few days ago that while Juve value the former Southampton man, a deal for the player would prove difficult to pull off.

This is because Tottenham would demand £26m for Hojbjerg even though he is not a regular starter for them, with Juventus preferring to invest that sort of money in a young player.

Additionally, it was alleged that Massimiliano Allegri’s men could face competition for the 28-year-old’s signature from Atletico Madrid.

Fernando Llorente recommends Hojbjerg to Juventus

However, Llorente, who hung up his boots earlier this year, believes that Juve should not hesitate in moving for the Tottenham man.

When asked about Hojbjerg, the Spaniard told Gazzetta dello Sport: “I faced him in the Premier League. He is a leader, a captain and is what Juventus need to start a new successful era.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It remains to be seen if Juve would be able to stump up the £25m-£30m that Tottenham are likely to demand for Hojbjerg. I still feel that Atletico Madrid is the 28-year-old’s most likely destination in January.

The rumours surrounding Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s future at Tottenham Hotspur are intensifying as we make our way towards the January transfer window, and now it has emerged that the North London club need two things to happen before they let him go.

Having been a key figure under both Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, it has come as a bit of a shock to see Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg slip down the pecking order at Spurs of late.

The Danish midfielder is currently playing second fiddle to the pairing of Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr in the middle of the park for Ange Postecoglou‘s side.

It seemed Hojbjerg was destined for a move to Atletico Madrid this summer (Daily Mail) but that never materialised. The player himself reportedly turned down a deadline-day move to Fulham, too (Football Insider).

Now, a ‘disappointed’ Hojbjerg is believed to be keen on a switch in January, with Juventus primed to snap him up (CalcioMercato).

Spurs want two things if they are to sell Hojbjerg

However, navigating an exit from the Lilywhites won’t be straightforward for Hojbjerg or any club looking to secure his signature. According to the latest from the Express, Spurs have two demands.

First of all, a replacement must come through the door before Tottenham even consider letting the 28-year-old leave the club in the New Year. With Postecoglou “due to lose” both Bissouma and Sarr to the African Cup of Nations, his squad is set to be “depleted” in January.

This makes Hojbjerg a much more important player than he appears to be right now, and he will inevitably move “up the pecking order.” Therefore, a replacement for him would be pivotal, as Spurs are unlikely to be prepared to lose three midfielders at the same time.

Secondly, any transfer for Hojbjerg has to bring in a “credible fee” for Spurs. The club previously wanted “in excess of £35m” for the Dane, and there are no indications that this valuation has dropped.

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no way we should let Hojbjerg go until we have a replacement, as he will be very important in the absence of Bissouma and Sarr. I think if we can move fast and get a player in early in the window, we could then let Hojbjerg go for around £30m and it would be fair for all parties.

According to the print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness), intermediaries have now begun work to find a formula for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to complete a move to Juventus in January.

The speculation linking Hojbjerg with a move to Juve has intensified over the last couple of weeks and the reports keep coming thick and fast on the matter.

A couple of days ago, we relayed a report from Calciomercato.it, which suggested that the Serie A giants would find a deal for the Tottenham man to be quite complicated.

It was explained that Juve might not want to speed up a considerable fee on a player of Hojbjerg’s age and also suggested that they could face intense competition from Atletico Madrid for the player’s signature.

Juventus working on a formula for Hojbjerg deal

Gazzetta have now said that while the Old Lady have identified many different midfield targets ahead of January, including Udinese’s Lazar Samardzic and Atletico Madrid’s Rodrigo De Paul, it is Hojbjerg who is at the top of their wishlist.

The report states that the 28-year-old is a ‘big favourite’ for Massimiliano Allegri’s men, who have already made contact over a deal.

The publication also backs up what we have heard from other sources on Tottenham’s valuation, claiming that the North London club want €30m (£26.1m) for the former Southampton man.

Spurs Web Opinion

It looks like Hojbjerg’s representatives are extremely keen to ensure there is not a repeat of what happened in the summer when the deal to take the midfielder to Atletico fell through in the final stages. It appears they are not wasting any time in laying the groundwork to ensure that the 28-year-old can leave in January.

Calciomercato.it have claimed that Juventus will find it quite difficult to get a deal for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg over the line due to a number of factors.

Over the last few weeks, we at Spurs Web have relayed a number of reports from Italian outlets which have indicated that Juve are expected to make a move for Hojbjerg when the transfer window reopens.

This includes an update by Gazzetta dello Sport last week, which revealed that the Serie A giants sent scouts to watch the Tottenham man in action during the international break and that they are ‘fascinated’ by his profile.

Juventus

Hojbjerg deal expected to prove difficult for Juventus

Calciomercato.it have now also reported on Juventus’ midfield issues and how bolstering that area of the pitch is a priority for the club in January, with Hojbjerg said to be ‘above all’ on their wishlist.

However, they state that there are ‘no shortage of pitfalls’ for the Old Lady in their efforts to sign the 28-year-old, one of them being the fact that they prefer a loan deal with an option to buy while Tottenham are only open to a permanent sale.

The outlet adds that even though Hojbjerg is not featuring in Spurs’ starting eleven, the Lilywhites want a minimum of €30m (£26m), an amount which the Bianconeri would be hesitant to invest in a player of his age.

Finally, the publication also adds that Juve will have to deal with plenty of competition for the former Southampton man’s signature and are in danger of being ‘overtaken’ by Atletico Madrid in the race.

Spurs Web Opinion

Even though Hojbjerg would have only 18 months left on his contract at Tottenham in January, he is quite easily worth £25m-plus, given his experience and quality. Spurs will be hoping that a bidding war ensues for his signature and pushes up the price.

Rudy Galetti has claimed that Ange Postecoglou’s January priority at Spurs is to replace the injured Manor Solomon and Ivan Perisic, while Conor Gallagher is mentioned as a possible midfield reinforcement.

Over the last month and a half, there have been several contradictory reports on the future of Gallagher, who has been a regular in Mauricio Pochettino’s starting eleven at Chelsea so far this season.

The Athletic on September 12 that the Blues hierarchy are open to cashing in on the 23-year-old in January amidst Tottenham’s interest.

90 min even asserted a couple of weeks ago that the Spurs believe that they would be the England international’s preferred destination if he leaves Stamford Bridge in January.

However, a recent report on  Football Insider poured cold water over those claims, suggesting that Gallagher is ready to put pen to paper on a new deal at his boyhood club, having been given assurances by Pochettino that he is an important part of his plans.

Two out and one in for Spurs midfield in January

If Galetti’s latest update is to be believed, Spurs have not yet given up hope of signing the Chelsea star, with the club potentially ready to offload Lo Celso and Hojbjerg to make room for the 23-year-old.

The journalist also backed up what we have heard from other sources recently about Tottenham’s interest in Al-Ittihad winger Jota, and Postecoglou’s desire to invest in a new forward.

Galetti told Tribal Football: “On the exits list, the main names are Giovanni Lo Celso and Pierre Hojbjerg.

“The chances of seeing them leave in January – towards Spain – are growing: for the Argentine midfielder, Tottenham are also open to evaluating the idea of a loan, while the eventual farewell of the Danish midfielder – Atletico Madrid are always interested – could open up some scenarios, including the possible assault on Conor Gallagher.

“However, the priority of Postecoglu is to replace Ivan Perisic and Manor Solomon – both injured – on the left side of the pitch.

“To date, Spurs – among others – are monitoring Jota: after his sensational move to Al Ittihad, coach Nuno, for the moment, doesn’t consider him an important player and this difficult situation could facilitate his transfer as early as January.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I would be extremely surprised if Chelsea allowed Gallagher to leave in January, given that the midfielder is evidently central to Pochettino’s plans.

However, if the 23-year-old does not sign a new contract at Stamford Bridge within the next couple of months, I fully expect Tottenham to test the waters with an offer.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is open to leaving Tottenham Hotspur in January, but says the situation could become complicated due to the African Cup of Nations.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has seen his stock fall at Tottenham this season and has struggled for game time under new manager Ange Postecoglou.

The Danish midfielder was a first-team regular under both Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho and was seen as one of the key leaders in the Spurs squad.

Now, with the form of both Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr, Hojbjerg has had to make do with substitute appearances from the bench this season.

He was heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid during the summer (Daily Mail), and turned down a deadline-day move to Fulham (Football Insider).

But, Hojbjerg is known to be ‘disappointed’ with his current situation and there is a belief that Juventus could offer him a way out (CalcioMercato).

Romano explains Hojbjerg’s Spurs situation

Now, Romano has detailed how the 28-year-old may look for an exit in January, but there is a caveat – Spurs may need him to stay to cover for Bissouma and Sarr’s likely involvement in the African Cup of Nations.

He said: “Keep an eye on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg… because as I told you he was an important story a couple of weeks ago as he changed agents after the summer transfer window. He was on the list of Manchester United but the priority option was always Sofyan Amrabat.

“He was also one of the names considered at many other clubs, including Atletico Madrid in the final days of the transfer window. They tried in every way to convince Tottenham of the Hojbjerg deal but no agreement. And now Hojbjerg remains open to a January move.

“He’s keen on a potential transfer. Let’s see if it’s going to be January or the summer window because we know some Tottenham midfielders will go to the Africa Cup and this is why it could be complicated to give the green light to the exit of Hojbjerg.

“But the player is open in January or the summer to leave Tottenham and try a new experience. It’s true that Juventus are keeping tabs on the situation but there are also other clubs.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I would be very surprised if Hojbjerg remains at the club beyond this season. But, as much as he may want to leave in January, I reckon we will keep hold of him due to AFCON, rather than rushing into any new signing.
