Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been dealt an injury blow with the news that he has torn his cruciate ligaments and is expected to be sidelined for between 6 to 8 months, according to TNT Sports Argentina.

Bentancur opened the scoring in yesterday’s 4-1 defeat at Leicester City when he poked the ball home from close range, however, Tottenham’s afternoon progressively got worse after they shipped in four goals and saw the Uruguayan suffer a nasty knee injury.

Bentancur was left clutching his left knee and was writhing on the floor in agony which saw him have to hobble off the pitch and was replaced by Pape Matar Sarr.

Spurs assistant head coach Cristian Stellini spoke to the club’s official website after yesterday’s defeat and had hoped that the midfielder would be back in action shortly:

“We know that he feels pain, he can walk, so we have to wait a bit of time to check and understand what happened. We hope he feels better in a few days, and we can have him back soon.”

Tottenham’s injury problems have worsened over the course of the past week with Hugo Lloris out for at least six weeks, Yves Bissouma having undergone ankle surgery on Friday and are now joined on the treatment table by Bentancur.

The north Londoners travel to AC Milan on Tuesday evening with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg having to serve a one-match suspension and face the prospect of Oliver Skipp and Sarr being the central midfield pairing.
