Kevin Wimmer says  Mousa Dembele is one of the best players of all time, insisting that his former Tottenham teammate could have easily been the best player at a club like Real Madrid in his prime.

One only has to see how Dembele is spoken about by his former Spurs and Belgium teammates to know just how highly rated he was by those who played alongside him.

Tottenham’s decline under Mauricio Pocehttino began when Dembele left the club back in 2019 to move to China, with the Lilywhites struggling to replace him.

Wimmer admitted that the midfielder was one of a kind and that he effortlessly dominated in training on a regular basis, adding that it was easy to play with the silky left-footer.

Is Dembele one of the most underrated of all time?

The former Spurs centre-back told The Athletic: “I always, always say it — the best player ever. This guy could easily play for Real Madrid in his prime and be one of the best players.

“So much class, never loses the ball, even if he has two or three opponents. He was so strong and technical, and his left foot was good. He was fast.

“He was so important for us and also for me — when he was playing as a No 6 in front of me, you always knew you were safe. Because if there are no options, there’s always the option to play to Mousa.

“In training, when we did four-a-side games and tournaments, when you were playing with Mousa, you knew you were going to win. His team will always win. (Which is) Crazy, because we had so much quality in the team. He made it look so easy and a lot of fun playing football.

“It was impossible to get the ball from him and he was still moving so fast, I don’t know how he did it. Every day. Sometimes players are amazing in training but then the game is different because there’s more pressure, it’s faster. But he was always the same.”

Wimmer also spoke in glowing terms about his former Tottenham boss, Mauricio Pochettino, explaining that the Argentine was meticulous in what he expected during training but also made the sessions fun.

Wimmer said about the current Chelsea boss: “He had a very good mix of being calm and fun in training, but then also being really focused.

“He had his perfect vision of how he wanted to play and then every training he explained it to every player. If you have the ball here, these players have to be there and these are what your options will be.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Dembele was arguably the most press-resistant player in the history of the game as his immense strength, outstanding balance and quick feet, were quite a unique combination, which one does not find in the same footballer.

Kevin Wimmer has admitted that he still has regrets over the fact that he and his Tottenham teammates could not get over the line and win the Premier League during his time in North London.

Spurs are now sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League table, which has got some supporters dreaming of a potential title tilt this season.

The last time that the Lilywhites were in a title race was during Mauricio Pocehttino’s time at the club, with Tottenham falling short in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons.

Wimmer admitted that Spurs missed several chances to put pressure on Leicester City in the first of those two seasons.

Premier League title regrets for Kevin Wimmer

The former Tottenham centre-back told The Athletic: “We had the chance when we played West Ham away. We had one chance and we didn’t use it. It was a difficult game. A lot of fights, it was raining, a fighting game.

“We could never close the gap. Sometimes, you think back to this time because we saw it as such a big chance to win the title and it would have been very special for Spurs.

“But it was crazy, because Leicester were always winning. They always played a day after us towards the end and they didn’t always play so special, but at the end they somehow managed to win.

“Whereas we had a few games, like against Arsenal (a 2-2 home draw versus 10 men three days after the West Ham defeat), where we were so much better on the day but didn’t win.”

Leicester eventually secured the title after Tottenham were held to a 2-2 draw by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, with the game being dubbed ‘the battle of the bridge’ for the number of altercations between the two sets of players.

Wimmer admitted that there “should have been five red cards” in the game, adding: “In the last few minutes, you could see everybody realised the title was gone and there were so many emotions during this game and afterwards.

“The Chelsea and Spurs players were getting into each other, but then in the dressing room, it was so quiet. Everybody needed some time to realise what had happened. It was really, really disappointing.”

Tottenham were also in the title race until quite late on in the subsequent campaign, finishing with their record points tally of 86, but they were pipped to the title by Antonio Conte’s Chelsea.

Wimmer said about that campaign: “In that second season, we didn’t have the feeling like we did the year before, when we had more of the feeling (that we could win it). We had a big chance.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane with West Brom just ahead of the clash against Chelsea was the game where we lost the title.

We were dominating proceedings and were leading for large parts of the encounter but allowed a late equaliser, which meant that finishing above Leicester became near impossible.

Had we won that game, the pressure would have mounted on the Foxes and history could have been a lot different.

Kevin Wimmer admitted that he looks back very fondly on the two years that he spent at Tottenham Hotspur and revealed that he still remains good friends with Son Heung-min.

Wimmer had a promising start to his career at Spurs after arriving from Koln in the summer of 2015, deputising well for the injured Jan Vertonghen during his first season at White Hart Lane.

However, he struggled for regular game time in his second season in North London and eventually decided to join Stoke City in search of first-team football.

Wimmer’s career at the Bet365 stadium did not go according to plan as the club was relegated from the Premier League in his first season.

The centre-back subsequently had loan spells with the likes of Hannover 96, Mouscron and Karlsruher, before returning to his native Austria by signing for Rapid Wien in the summer of 2021.

Kevin Wimmer looks back on happy Spurs days

The former Tottenham man, who now plays for Slovakian side Slovan Bratislava, has opened up on his time at N17 and the chemistry he had with his former teammates.

Wimmer told The Athletic: “It was a very special time. To play with such big players, to be part of a dressing room with such great chemistry — being there was a dream come true.”

“From the first day, I felt that the guys were really down to earth. With so many games and so much pressure, it’s very important that the team is in a good mood. You need to have good chemistry and we definitely had this.”

Wimmer and Son had a bit of a bromance when the Austrian was at Spurs and the defender admitted that the pair quickly struck a good relationship since they both spoke German.

He said: “Sonny joined a few weeks after me and Allan Dixon (the player liaison officer), said, ‘A German-speaking player is coming, so you will have one guy you can speak to’.

“I was really surprised by his German. I knew he’d played for Bayer Leverkusen and Hamburg, but it was really good. And it was also very nice to speak my own language a little bit.

“He was just like you see him. He’s very friendly. He’s always funny, always positive. So he brings a very good attitude to the team. And yeah, we had a very good connection from the first day.

“Having someone who could speak the same language was also good for him. In the beginning, his English was also not the best and we did so many things together. At training, we were always together and then afterwards, going for dinner or exploring the city.

“After I left, he never changed. He got better and better every season but his mentality never changed. He always stayed the same person. That’s why we are still in touch. At his level, it’s unique to have a character like this. He’s really one of the best.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Wimmer was quite impressive in his first season at Tottenham and it seemed at the time as if he was going to have a great career at the top level. However, the centre-back seemingly never managed to recover from his struggles at Stoke City.

Kevin Wimmer has described his move to Tottenham back in 2015 as a ‘dream come true’, admitting that he was never going to reject the chance to join the North London club once they made their interest known.

Wimmer had a promising start to his career at Spurs after arriving from Koln, deputising well for the injured Jan Vertonghen during his first season at White Hart Lane.

The defender has now spoken about his time at Spurs and admitted he was in awe at some of his teammates at the time.

Wimmer told Transfermarkt about his switch to Tottenham: “The transfer was an absolute dream come true for me. Of course, I wasn’t that naive and thought I would immediately become a regular player at Tottenham.

“But I didn’t want to be reproached for letting such an incredible opportunity pass. Tottenham were a different league to FC Koln.

“Suddenly you were sitting in the dressing room next to real superstars who you normally only know from the PlayStation. At every training session, I just thought: Wow, how strong they are.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The fact that Wimmer, despite his shortcomings, looked accomplished in the Tottenham backline during his first season at the club, is a testament to how much of a well-oiled machine we were under Pochettino, and also speaks volumes about Toby Alderweireld’s composure and leadership at the back.

Kevin Wimmer has revealed that he was shocked by the difference in approach to training and nutrition at Tottenham Hotspur and Stoke City.

Wimmer impressed in his first season at Tottenham, putting in solid displays at the back when Jan Vertonghen was out injured for a big chunk of the 2015-16 campaign.

The Austrian international found opportunities hard to come by in his second season at White Hart Lane but he had shown enough promise to convince Stoke to pay £18m to sign him in the summer of 2017.

However, things did not go according to plan for the centre-back at the Bet365 Stadium, with Stoke being relegated in his first season at the club.

Wimmer has now opened up on the difference between the Mauricio Pochettino regime at Tottenham and the Mark Hughes one with the Potters

The 29-year-old, who now plays for Austrian side Rapid Wien, admitted that the approach to nutrition at Stoke left him baffled.

Wimmer told Transfermarkt: “The transfer fee was of course a big deal. On the one hand, I was incredibly proud, but on the other hand, I couldn’t really grasp or even realise that figure.

“At that point, I was really keen to attack with Stoke, wanted to tackle, make a difference.

“If I’m honest, I was shocked: at Tottenham, every nuance was taken care of, both in training and off the pitch. The best example is the diet: every intolerance was taken care of. There was a gluten-free offer, there was a vegan offer.

“At Stoke, you could even order fish and chips for lunch. While at Tottenham you had to beg for a day off, at Stoke, Wednesdays were generally free.

“So, I thought, I don’t know if this can work. So I hired a personal trainer to make good use of the day off.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Pochettino was one of a few modern-day managers who revolutionised the approach to training and nutrition in the game.

So, it does not really come as a surprise that the difference in approach between him and Hughes, who was an old-school kind of manager, was night and day.

I suspect the situation at Spurs under Harry Redknapp was quite similar to the one Wimmer describes at Stoke.

Kevin Wimmer has praised former Tottenham teammate Heung-min Son after he won the Premier League Golden Boot award.

Son, 29, enjoyed a stellar campaign under Antonio Conte with his performances helping to lift his side into the group stage of next season’s Champions League for the first time since 2019-20.

A double on the final day in Tottenham’s 5-0 drubbing of Norwich ensured he tallied a career-best 23 goals which matched the number also set by Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah.

With the pair eventually sharing the title of top scorer, Son later reflected on his success with a post on Instagram thanking his Spurs colleagues and supporters for helping him along the way.

And Wimmer, who was Son’s teammate at Tottenham and one of his closest friends, sent a message to the South Korean star congratulating him on the achievement – ‘Bravo Brother’.

Image

Wimmer joined Tottenham in 2015 and made just 31 appearances in two seasons in England (Transfermarkt).

The 29-year-old now plies his trade with Austrian side Rapid Vienna and had the chance to potentially face Spurs this term when both sides were drawn against each other in the Europa Conference League (BBC Sport).

Spurs Web Opinion

Wimmer had a great relationship with Son during his short time at Spurs and that could be down to both of them joining the club at similar times.

It is nice to see that they have kept their friendship going with that Instagram interaction congratulating the Spurs star on his achievement this season.

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer has issued two-word reaction to Heung-min Son’s news from earlier today.

Spurs confirmed this morning that the South Korean had signed a new long-term contract with the North Londoners until 2025.

Wimmer and Son were known for their close friendship during their time together at Spurs having both arrived at the club from Germany in the same summer.

The central defender left Spurs to join Stoke City for £18million in 2017, having only started four Premier League matches in the previous season (BBC) and had his contract with the Potters terminated earlier this year so he could join Austrian outfit Rapid Vienna.

Son took to Instagram to express his delight after committing his future to Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, with Wimmer replying with ‘best player’.

Wimmer wasn’t the only past or present Spurs player to congratulate Son, with Kyle Walker-Peters, Robbie Keane, Michel Vorm, Sergio Reguilon, Giovani Lo Celso, Carlos Vinicius and Jermaine Jenas among those who commented.

While Son’s career has gone on from strength to strength, it was sad to see Wimmer having struggled following his move to Stoke City. Admittedly he was a bit-part player at Spurs, he showed he was more than capable of playing for a top-flight side when asked to cover the likes of Jan Vertonghen.

Kevin Wimmer has admitted that he has great memories of playing with a star-studded squad at Tottenham, picking out Mousa Dembele in particular as someone who was unplayable in training.

Wimmer had a promising first season at Spurs after arriving from Koln in 2015, deputising well for the injured Jan Vertonghen.

However, he struggled for regular game time in his second season in North London and eventually decided to join Stoke City in search of first-team football.

Wimmer’s career at the Bet365 stadium did not go according to plan as the club were relegated from the Premier League in his first season.

The centre-back, who is now on loan at Bundesliga 2 side Karlsruher SC from Stoke, has admitted that his first two years in English football with Tottenham helped him to improve as a player.

Wimmer told Football.London: “When you were playing a game like this with Toby Alderweireld next to me and Kyle Walker, to my left was Danny Rose, in front of me Mousa Dembele and behind me Hugo Lloris, even in training you can just enjoy because you play with so much class every day in training and then the games as well.

“It makes you better as a player as well because it’s easier. You always have so many options during the game because all the players have so much ability and so much class.

“It was of course for me much easier to play in a team like this. I think it was just enjoyable for me, it was a very good time and I didn’t want to miss it. I think I learnt a lot in this time for me and I really enjoyed to play with players like I did.

“Hugo is now a world champion, Jan has had an amazing career, Sonny and Harry Kane the best striker for me. All the players. Mousa for me was the best player I’ve ever seen.

“It was an incredible time for me but of course as a football player you want to play as much as possible and in this team I felt it was just very difficult for me. When everybody was fit it was just very difficult.

“In the second season I didn’t play as much anymore and if you don’t play a lot, if you always just train, of course with this team I got so many benefits from it as I trained every day with players like this, but the second season was difficult as I didn’t play so much again.

“Then I made to move to Stoke after as I wanted to try something new to get more and more game time.”

Unsurprisingly, the Austrian international picked out Mousa Dembele as the best player at Tottenham during the time, admitting that he had never seen a player like the Belgian.

He said about Dembele: “For me he was crazy. His left foot was just so good.

“The most incredible thing always was if it was in training or in a game no matter what, if you gave him the ball and there was two people running at him from behind, he never lost the ball,” claimed Wimmer.

“When you played in training games like four vs four or three vs three, 99% of the games the team with Mousa won. You gave him the ball in a difficult situation, you didn’t know where to play and you gave him the ball you know he won’t lose it. He was just incredible.

“I think from this time at Spurs if you ask the players they will all say that Mousa Dembele is just incredible. I’ve never seen a player like this. Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Sonny are all world-class players, but, for me, Mousa Dembele is just amazing.

“When you saw that every day in training what he did you just think how is that possible that he can have so much ability and never lose the ball.

“Even going forward when he had the ball on his feet and driving forward he was so quick and you couldn’t stop him. For me, he’s the best player I’ve seen so far.”

Kevin Wimmer has given an interview to Football.London in which he has opened up on his time at Tottenham Hotspur and the circumstances surrounding his exit from the club.

During the second part of the 2015/16 season, Wimmer seemed to be on his way to being a mainstay at the back for Tottenham for many years to come.

The Austrian deputised masterfully for the injured Jan Vertonghen as Spurs were trying to chase down Leicester City for the Premier League title.

However, the defender’s Spurs career did not offer anywhere close to what it promised as he found playing time hard to by in the subsequent season before leaving the club in 2017.

Even though it did not end the way in which he would have wanted, Wimmer still looks back at his time at Tottenham with fond memories.

The centre-back, who joined from Koln in 2015, admitted that he made up his mind to come to Spurs as soon as he heard the club were interested.

He told Football.London: “It was already in the wintertime like when in Germany you always have a little break in December and start again in January.

“First the contact came up and my agent at this point called me and said Spurs are interested in me because I played a very good first half to the season in Koln. When I first heard about Spurs’ interest in me it felt like it was not real.

“Koln is an amazing club, a very big club in Germany with big tradition, but when you hear a name like Tottenham it’s different class.

“As a player, it was always my dream to play in the Premier League, and then when you get the chance to play in the Premier League with a team like Tottenham, I didn’t need one second to think about it. I said straightaway of course I want to go there if possible.

“I played a few more games and it got more and more concrete. I went there, we spoke with the manager and everything and I had a very good time with Pochettino there and he made me feel already very welcome.

“That’s why I signed during the season and not in the summer because for me if I get a chance like this I don’t want to waste time. I want to take the chance and that’s why I signed a few months before the summer transfer window opened.”

The 28-year-old, who is now on loan at Karlsruher SC from Stoke City, admitted that he was over the moon with his first season in North London.

However, he insisted that he had little choice but to leave Spurs due to his lack of game time in his second season even though Mauricio Pochettino urged him stay.

Winner added: “Of course you always want to play more but he [Pochettino] said that you train good, everything is ok and keep believing. You have to understand there was so much class in a team like this and that it’s difficult maybe to get game time.

“I said I was expecting more game time than in the first season but the end of the first season was my better year as I thought I came to Tottenham and maybe it takes some time, but because of that run of games for sure it was much, much more successful.

“The second season it was difficult if you only play the FA Cup games or something like this.

“Pochettino said keep working hard and everything but as a player, if you don’t play for a long time it’s always difficult and you are not satisfied with yourself, you always try your best in training but if you don’t play as a footballer it doesn’t make you happy.

“If that happens for a longer period like a few months or for a season and you play like ten games or something in one season, with so many games in England it’s not what makes you happy.

“After my second year he didn’t tell me to leave but for me it was clear as they signed Sanchez the beginning of the third season before I left. For me it was like it would be even harder to get game time and that’s why I made the decision to move to Stoke.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While one could understand why Wimmer wanted to leave Spurs, perhaps the defender will be questioning his decision to join Stoke City in hindsight. The defender has not been helped by the injury problems over the years he but Stoke going down in his first season at the club was certainly a big blow to his career.

The first three episodes of Amazon Prime’s ‘All or Nothing: Tottenham Hotspur’ which came out on Monday, appear to have created quite a buzz.

While Spurs fans got a unique opportunity to learn what went on behind the scenes in a tumultuous season at the club, the documentary also makes fascinating viewing for the neutrals as it gives an insight into the demands and pressures at a top Premier League club.

As expected, Jose Mourinho has dominated the first three episodes with his team talks and one-on-one meetings with the likes of Dele Alli and Harry Kane, arguably proving the highlight of the show so far.

Dele Alli took to social media on Monday to admit reveal that he has already sat down to watch the docuseries.

It turns out that one other former Spurs star also enjoyed watching the first three episodes of the series.

Kevin Wimmer took to his Instagram story to post a screenshot of himself about to watch the documentary.

Spurs Web Opinion

I would not be surprised if Wimmer tuned into the series just to catch glimpses of Sonny. All joking aside, I am now genuinely convinced that this series can boost the club’s image worldwide.

I was initially sceptical about whether it would be good for us considering the poor season we had. However, given how widely this is going to be viewed, it could perhaps cement Tottenham’s place in the public imagination as one of the elite clubs in Europe.

In 2015, Tottenham Hotspur secured the signature of promising young centre back, Kevin Wimmer from German team, FC Koln for what seemed to be a steal at £4.3 million (The Guardian).

Wimmer had a promising start when filling in for Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen when they were out injured.

He was commanding and dominant in the air as he appeared 10 times for spurs in his first season.

His second wasn’t as fruitful as he only managed 5 appearances and with the incoming Davidson Sanchez and Juan Foyth, his Spurs future was up in the air at the end of the 2016/17 season (transfermarkt).

This is where the brilliance of Daniel Levy shines bright, squeezing as much juice out of a deal as possible… and his victim?

Enter Stoke City with an offer of £18 million giving Levy and Tottenham a profit of £14 million (BBC).

This will probably be looked back on as one of Levy’s many masterstrokes as Kevin Wimmer has been sidelined by Stoke after an unimpressive season on loan to Bundesliga side, Hannover.

According to reports, Kevin Wimmer has been asked by manager, Nathan Jones to remain at home rather than join Stoke on their pre-season tour of the Netherlands. (Sky Sports).

Spurs Web Opinion:

From what started as a promising career at Tottenham, this has certainly been a fall from grace for Wimmer.

But if those few glimpses of quality are anything to go by, he has enough to get himself back into the game.  However, his snub from the Stoke City boss certainly looks as if his future lies away from the Potteries.

We wish you all the best, Wimmer.

Stoke City have officially announced the signing of 24 year old Austrian centre-back Kevin Wimmer, who arrived from Spurs on a 5 year deal.

With regular first-team football simply not on the cards at Tottenham, the young Austrian international had made his intentions to leave clear from day 1 of the Summer transfer window.

The defender had been hopeful of completing a deal to keep him in the Premier League all Summer and today Stoke City have announced the signing of Wimmer on a 5 year deal.

As stated in Stoke’s announcement on social media, the deal is rumoured to have cost Stoke roughly £18 million, which is a fantastic return on a player who joined Tottenham for just £4.3 million in 2015.

Speaking about the move, Wimmer said in his first interview at Stoke City:

“I had some really good conversations with the manager [Mark Hughes] and they were important for me.”

“He is a very good manager and I like the way he approaches the game. His style of play suits the way I like to play too -he likes his defenders to be able to play out with the ball.”

“I am just so happy to be at Stoke now because I really wanted to come here, to a club with such big tradition, so I feel really good and am very excited about meeting up with everybody and getting ready for the matches ahead.”

No thanks, Kevin?

Are you sad to see Wimmer leave? Or does the money more than make up for it?

According to reports from The Daily Mail, up to three Premier League sides are interested in signing 23 year old Dutch forward Vincent Janssen before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

Playing second fiddle to Harry Kane, Janssen found game-time hard to come by in his debut season in England last year, making just 7 Premier League starts for Spurs, despite numerous lengthy injuries to Kane.

Janssen who signed for Spurs for £17 million, with his limited minutes on the pitch, scored 6 goals, just 2 of those however from open play with the other 4 coming from the penalty spot, in all competitions.

It is understood that Premier League trio Stoke City, West Brom and Crystal Palace are all interested in boosting their attacking options this Summer with a move for the backup striker.

24 year old Austrian defender Kevin Wimmer has already jumped ship to Stoke, therefore the possibility to join up with a former team-mate could attract the Dutchman to the Britannia Stadium too.

However earlier in the month, The Daily Mail also suggested that German outfit Borussia Monchengladbach were interested in the forward, while (the much less reputable) HITC Sport have suggested Swansea may yet hijack any potential deals.

Although interest in Janssen is seemingly very high, with other European outlets claiming that Lazio and Marseille are also considering a move, it is unlikely Spurs will sell the 2016 Summer signing, given his talent and youthfulness.

What figure would you accept for Janssen? Or would you refuse to sell?

According to SkySources, Spurs defender Kevin Wimmer is to have a medical at Stoke City today ahead of a £15 million move to the Britannia Stadium.

The Austrian defender has been linked with various clubs such as Crystal Palace and West Brom over the last few days after having been expected to leave Spurs for most of Summer.

Despite the 24 year old’s eagerness to find a new club offering regular game-time, the £20 million price-tag placed on the centre-back by Spurs was reportedly deterring potential interest.

Additionally, Spurs had already sold Kyle Walker to Manchester City and were somewhat lacking in defensive depth, which meant the club were unlikely sell until securing replacements.

However now that Tottenham have secured the signing of 21 year old Colombian Davinson Sanchez and that Spurs appear to be tying up a deal for 19 year old Argentine Juan Foyth, Wimmer is free to move on to a new club.

According to SkySources, a move to Stoke City is on the cards, with the Austrian international undergoing a medical at the West Midlands side.

A fee of £15 million is rumoured to have been agreed between the two clubs and Wimmer is likely to be announced at Mark Hughes’ 7th signing of the Summer as early as tomorrow.

Do you think £15 million is a good deal for Spurs?

According to The Daily Mail, Crystal Palace have launched a bid of £15 million to sign out-of-favour Tottenham defender Kevin Wimmer.

For months now many different rumours have circulated concerning Tottenham’s attempts to bring in defensive reinforcements and current Spurs centre-back Kevin Wimmer’s efforts to find a new club.

It had often been repeated that Wimmer would be allowed to leave the club once Tottenham had successfully lined up a replacement for the Austrian international.

Now that the signing of 21 year old defender Davinson Sanchez has been all but confirmed, interest in Wimmer’s signature has suddenly sky-rocketed with three different clubs appearing to have joined the race to sign the defender in the last few days.

Specifically Premier League interest is understood to be high in the 24 year old, with West Brom and Stoke City already reportedly circling the centre-back, but now The Daily Mail has revealed that Crystal Palace have stolen a march on both clubs with an opening bid of £15 million.

The defender who signed for Spurs from Cologne in 2015 for just £4.3 million is apparently valued at £20 million, which is a dramatic increase of worth since signing for the North-London outfit.

It is widely expected that Wimmer will leave the club in the near future, and even £15 million is a healthy profit of just over £10 million Spurs will have made on the defender’s departure.

Given the clubs rumoured to be interested in signing Wimmer, it appears the centre-back is likely to get his desired stay in England after all.

According to SkySources, Stoke City have joined the race to sign 24 year Austrian international Kevin Wimmer from Spurs Summer.

The Spurs defender recently found himself to be out-of-favour at the club, after starting just 5 Premier League games for Tottenham last season.

The defender has been linked with a move away from North-London all Summer, with the player himself even expressing his desire to leave in early July when he told SkySports Austria that it would be ‘beautiful’ to play regular Premier League football elsewhere.

Last week, West Brom were rumoured to be launching an opening bid for the 24 year old, but now SkySources have revealed that Tony Pulis’ pursuit of Wimmer may be rivaled by Mark Hughes’ Stoke City.

The centre-back, who signed for Spurs for £4.3 million from Cologne in 2015, reportedly won’t be sold for anything less than the £20 million price-tag Spurs have placed on the Austrian.

West Brom remain firm favourites to sign the want-away defender this Summer, with a move likely to happen before the deadline at the end of the month now that Spurs have confirmed the capture of 21 year Davinson Sanchez from Ajax on a 6 year deal.

According to The Telegraph, West Brom are close to agreeing a £15 million deal to sign Austrian centre-back Kevin Wimmer from Spurs and are expected to announce the capture within the next few days.

The 24 year old has been widely expected to leave North-London for most of the Summer, despite initial fears that the £20 million price-tag Spurs had slapped on the defender was pricing Wimmer out of the market.

However, according to The Telegraph, West Brom and Spurs are now in advanced negotiations over the permanent transfer of the Austrian international in a deal that could eventually rise to Tottenham’s preferred figure of £20 million in add-ons and bonuses.

Pulis has reportedly only turned to Wimmer, who signed for Spurs in 2015 for £4.3 million, as an option very recently after having abandoning his attempts to sign Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson.

The Telegraph also reports that this deal could signal progress being made in Tottenham’s efforts to sign 21 year old Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez.

However, it is thought that this deal does not pave the way for Jonny Evans to swap The Hawthornes for The Etihad, despite Manchester City’s plans to launch a second bid for the 29 year old.

Will you be sad to see Wimmer go? Or is the £20 million more than worth it?

Talking to Sky Sport Austria, Spurs bench-warmer Kevin Wimmer has revealed his desire to remain in the Premier League next season.

After signing for Spurs in 2015 for £4.3 million, 24 year old centre-back Kevin Wimmer has failed to earn himself a regular spot in Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team plans.

This Summer, it is largely expected that the Austrian international will depart the club, but so far the £20 million price-tag placed on the defender has only deterred potential buyers.

Amidst reported interest from Southampton, Wimmer spoke out on the frustration he feels at being unable to swiftly move on to a new club. He told Sky Sport Austria:

“24 years of age is where it is most important to play regularly and not only have to train week after week and sit on the bench.”

“In the next few days and weeks, the main focus will certainly be placed on what is there for offers.”

“We will definitely look around, it’s time to look for something, where the chances of regular use are again higher.”

Wimmer then went on to discuss potential destinations, revealing his desire to stay in the Premier League.

“For me, it would be the most beautiful if I could stay in the Premier League,” He added.

“But the league is very good for me, also from Germany, I have to look closely at how Tottenham’s side looks at what they are doing and how it actually looks with the release sum.”

But the Austrian defender didn’t rule out a move back to the Bundesliga. He said:

“In Cologne, I have experienced three super years.”

“I believe that Cologne is always a very nice step for me, you have to look at what happens, but I would prefer it if I could remain in the Premier League.”

According to his agent, Kevin Wimmer will struggle to find a new club due to the high price-tag placed on the defender by Spurs.

Despite impressing during his debut season at Tottenham, Kevin Wimmer has since failed to earn a place in Mauricio Pochettino’s plans and now looks set to depart the North-London club this Summer.

However, according to Wimmer’s agent Jurgen Werner, the 24 year old will struggle to find a new home in the upcoming transfer window, due to the hefty £20 million price-tag placed on the Austrian. He told German website Sprox:

“Spurs still see him as a talent. There was also interest from Germany or Italy but, because of the price, it is difficult for all clubs outside the Premier League.”

“We have to see what is happening on the English market.”

The Express claims that a number of teams are interested in a move for the young centre-back, but fails to mention any names.

I think what we’ll likely see here is for Spurs to identify and all but confirm a replacement for Wimmer, and then we’ll see his price-tag drop. Wimmer will only leave when Tottenham are confident they have his boots filled.

And right now it’s better to put him in the shop window than telling clubs to wait. So I reckon Wimmer will eventually be sold for roughly £8-12 million, when we’ve snapped up a Veltman or the likes.

Do you think I’m wrong? And how much do you think Wimmer is worth?

Spurs centre-back Kevin Wimmer is reportedly a transfer target for his former side Koln, whom Tottenham signed the 24 year old from in 2015.

According to German newspaper Bild, Kevin Wimmer may be set for a return to his former Bundesliga side Koln, having started just 4 games in the Premier League in this his second season with Tottenham.

The Austrian centre-back had impressed in his first season with Spurs, having stepped in to replace an injured Jan Vertonghen for much of the second half of the season, following a £4.3 million move from Germany. Now, however, Wimmer seems to be surplus to requirements at Spurs, given the form of Vertonghen, Alderweireld and Dier in defence, as well as the emergence of 19 year old Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Koln had been reportedly interested in a loan move for Wimmer in January, but will now be looking to strike a deal for a permanent transfer, according to Bild. The reports failed however to mention a possible price-tag on the Austrian or whether any contact had even been made.

This rumour coincides with the developing rumours over Tottenham’s reported interest in Hull City defender Harry Maguire. Which would you prefer? Keeping Kevin Wimmer, or making a move for Harry Maguire?
