Ange Postecoglou has been heaping praise on Heung-min Son ahead of the weekend’s action in the Premier League, and has insisted the Spurs captain never needed the armband to prove his passion for the club.
Since the decline of Hugo Lloris last year, and the departure of Harry Kane this summer, the obvious choice for naming a new captain at Tottenham Hotspur was Heung-min Son.
The South Korean has been at Tottenham since 2015, he captains his national side, and clearly has the love and respect of everyone at the club.
Naturally then, Ange Postecoglou selected the 31-year-old to wear the captain’s armband for this new era at Spurs. And, so far, Son has flourished with the added responsibility.
Spurs are unbeaten in their opening six games of the Premier League season, and Son has shown real quality to score five goals so far (Transfermarkt).
His performance in the North London derby last weekend was underpinned by two goals, but it was his passion and the ability to lead by example that really allowed Son to shine.
Sonny loves Spurs, with or without the armband
Speaking to the press (via Football.London) in advance of the clash against Liverpool this weekend, Postecoglou had only nice things to say about his captain and the way Heung-min Son represents the club.
On Son’s role as an ambassador for Spurs, Postecoglou said: “To be fair to Sonny, he always has been. He hasn’t needed the armband to show his love for the football club.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Sonny has been brilliant since taking on the armband this season. He looks incredibly happy and that kind of positive attitude can only lead to good things throughout the squad.
He is performing well on the pitch, he’s speaking to the press with such good energy and insight, and he epitomises the spirit of this new Spurs side.
