Mathew Upson was extremely impressed by the performance that Destiny Udogie delivered against England on Tuesday.

It was another big feather in Udogie’s cap last night as he was handed his first start for Italy in a high-profile clash at Wembley.

The 20-year-old was completely unfazed by the occasion and had the aura of an experienced player who has well over 50 caps to his name.

The Tottenham man was composed in defence and confidently strode forward with the ball from the back on a number of occasions, with his impressive work down the left leading to Italy’s opener from Gianluca Scamacca on 15 minutes.

Udogie was one of the best players on the pitch in the first half but he was replaced by Inter Milan’s Federico Dimarco just past the hour mark as Luciano Spalletti’s men went in search of an equaliser.

Destiny Udogie is impressing on all counts this year

In the end, the away side found themselves on the end of a 3-1 loss but Upson was blown away with what he saw from the Spurs star on the night.

The former England centre-back told the BBC Sport website: “We’ve touched on him a couple of times in this first half already, Destiny Udogie. He’s just shown there exactly why he has started tonight.

“Such a driving run, bursting forward with such energy. Coming into the box from the left and doing a few one-twos. Just brings another dimension to this Italy side.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Udogie has effortlessly passed each big challenge that has been put in front of him and there is no doubt that his ceiling is extremely high. The 20-year-old might just be the best signing we made during the Fabio Paratici era.

James Maddison has praised rumoured Tottenham target Kalvin Phillips for his performance in England’s 3-1 win over Italy.

Even though Phillips has struggled to get much of a look in since his switch to Manchester City, Gareth Southgate has continued to show faith in the midfielder, who started for the Three Lions in what was a repeat of the Euro 2020 final on Tuesday at Wembley.

There has been plenty of speculation over the 27-year-old’s future recently, with Football Transfers claiming last week that Tottenham are keen on snapping up the former Leeds man, who was alleged to have made up his mind to leave the Etihad Stadium in January.

Could Maddison and Phillips team up for Spurs?

Meanwhile, 90 min also confirmed Spurs’ interest in Phillips a couple of days ago but the outlet claimed that the player was also on the radars of Bayern Munich, Newcastle United and Aston Villa.

Phillips took to Instagram after England’s 3-1 win over Italy to express his delight at the result, with Maddison responding to the post with a clap and heart emoji.

Spurs Web Opinion

If Tottenham do hold a genuine interest in Phillips, perhaps Postecoglou can use Maddison to put in a good word to his England teammate about the club ahead of the January window.

Destiny Udogie has received some praise after his first start for Italy even though they fell to a 3-1 loss to England at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday.

Udogie, who won his first cap for Italy as a second-half substitute in the Azzurri’s 4-0 win over Malta last week, came into the starting eleven against the Three Lions.

As Spurs fans have come to expect from the 20-year-old, he stepped up to the occasion and did not look fazed by the big stage.

He was arguably Italy’s best player in the first half, with his impressive work down the left paving the way for Gianluca Scamacca to open the scoring for the visitors against the run of play on 15 minutes.

However, England mounted an impressive fight back, with a Harry Kane brace and Marcus Rashford goal seeing them emerge comfortable 3-1 winners.

Destiny Udogie was a bright spark in Italy defeat

Udogie was replaced by Inter Milan’s Federico Dimarco just past the hour mark as Luciano Spalletti’s men went in search of an equaliser but the reigning European champions failed to muster any sort of fight in the latter stages of the game.

The Tottenham man was one of the few shining lights on a disappointing night for Italy and his rating reflects that.

Football Italia have given him a rating of 6.5 out of 10, which is the highest of any Azzuri star and wrote about the left-back:Was involved in Italy’s opener by linking up with El Shaarawy. Came close to scoring his first Italy goal in his senior debut as a starter.”

The Telegraph gave him a rating of 6, which was the second highest in the Italy side after Scamacca, and they wrote about the Spurs man: “Showed both sides of his game. Good game management to take booking for Foden foul. Broke forward to goal but flat-footed when Rashford scored.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I believe Udogie easily deserved a 7 as he was one of the best players on the pitch in the first half, dealing impressively with the threat of Phil Foden and Kyle Walker down the England right and striding forward confidently with the ball when space opened up for him.

Pedro Porro was blown away by the performance that Harry Kane delivered for England in their 3-1 win over Italy.

England needed a point at Wembley on Tuesday to secure passage to next summer’s European Championship in Germany, and it looked like the Three Lions might be in for a tricky night when the away side took the lead through Gianluca Scamacca on 15 minutes.

Destiny Udogie, who made his first start for the Azzurri, was involved in the goal, with the Spurs star starting the move with an impressive burst down the left flank.

However, the Three Lions hit back quickly, with Kane stepping up to convert from the penalty spot on 32 minutes after Jude Bellingham was fouled in the box.

Marcus Rashford then put England ahead with a wonderful solo effort on 57 minutes before Kane put the icing on the cake with a well-taken third goal on 77 minutes.

There are still Harry Kane fans in the Spurs squad

Apart from his goals, the England captain also held the ball up brilliantly and was involved in some smart interplay, with Porro mightily impressed by what his former Spurs teammate produced.

Here is what the Spaniard tweeted after the game:

Micah Richards would love to see Gareth Southgate hand James Maddison another start against Italy on Tuesday.

Maddison won his fifth cap for England in their friendly over Australia on Friday, with the Tottenham man operating in a number ten role behind Ollie Watkins.

It was largely a cagey affair at Wembley as the Three Lions edged out the Socceroos 1-0, with the Spurs star not getting too much space or time on the ball.

It remains to be seen whether the 26-year-old will keep his place in the side for the Euro qualifier against Italy, with Jude Bellingham expected to be back in the starting eleven.

Over the weekend, Southgate spoke in glowing terms about the Tottenham man’s quality and his impact in the England dressing room (Tom Barclay).

Should Maddison start again for England vs Italy?

Richards has suggested that Maddison showed enough against Australia to warrant a start against Italy, suggesting that the Spurs star can play on the left if Bellingham comes into the side.

The pundit said on The Rest Is Football podcast: “I’d love to see Maddison again. I think he’s outstanding in that number 10 role. I don’t think he had his best game the other day. They could play him off the left though [if Bellingham starts at 10].”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think Southgate would tweak his formation to accommodate both Maddison and Bellingham as his efforts to do so against Ukraine last month backfired. So, I expect the Real Madrid man to start, with Maddison likely to be relegated to the bench.

James Maddison has used the international break to poke fun at his England teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold over the controversy surrounding Tottenham’s recent win over Liverpool, but insists it was all a light-hearted joke.

Spurs have enjoyed an incredible start to the new season, and James Maddison has been at the heart of everything good the side have done so far. The playmaker has five assists and two goals to his name already in the early stages of his Tottenham career (Transfermarkt).

One of those assists came in the recent 2-1 win over Liverpool, when he played in his Spurs captain Heung-min Son in the first half.

Liverpool would equalise not long after, but fell to defeat in the final moments after Pedro Porro drilled in a cross which Joel Matip put into his own net in injury time.

The game was shrouded in controversy as Liverpool had a goal incorrectly disallowed for offside, and also had Diogo Jota sent off for two very soft yellow cards. The issues led Jurgen Klopp to suggest the game should be replayed (Guardian).

Maddison says the idea of a replay is in the past

With Maddison on international duty with the England squad, he took the opportunity to share a little joke on his Instagram. Maddison is pictured talking to Trent Alexander-Arnold, and captioned the post: “Still asking for a replay.”

Now, speaking to talkSPORT, the 26-year-old explained what was really going on: “The conversation wasn’t anything to do with that. Just having a bit of banter with Trent.

“Trent is a good friend of mine, we get on really well. Tongue-in-cheek banter. That game is in the past, we were just having a little mess around.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I was worried for a moment that we might have to replay that game against Liverpool, but the league simply can’t allow it to happen as it would set such a dangerous precedent. Mistakes happen, it’s in the past now as Madders says, and it’s good that he can laugh about it with Trent.

Ange Postecoglou believes James Maddison has the talent to become a vital cog for England, especially now that he has shown he is more than capable of handling the pressure that comes with playing for a club like Tottenham.

Maddison has been one of the most productive playmakers in the Premier League over the last few years, even though he was playing for a misfiring Leicester City side.

However, despite that, he only has four England caps to his name, which is also a reflection of the quality of attacking players he is competing against for a place in the side.

The 26-year-old has arguably been the best player across the Premier League so far this season, having established himself as an indispensable part of the current Spurs side, who are now sitting at the top of the table.

Postecoglou insisted that one of the motivations behind Maddison’s move to Spurs in the summer was to show Gareth Southgate he has more layers to his game.

When asked if the Tottenham midfielder could become a vital part of the Three Lions outfit, the Australian told Football.London: “There’s no reason why not. National teams are a bit funny because club form isn’t always the greatest indicator of having a great international career.

“There’s so many other things that need to fall into line. Sometimes it’s about circumstance, opportunity, who else is in that position, how much you get to play, the kind of football.

“There’s so many things that need to fall into place but Madders has the ability to play and excel at the international level. I’ve got no doubt about that.

“I think one of the reasons he came to Tottenham was to show people that he’s got more layers to his game and I think he’s showing that. Hopefully, that transfers to him making an impact for England.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The question for Southgate is whether he can accommodate both Maddison and Bellingham in the middle of the park in a 4-3-3. The England boss could decide to go with a back five in order to allow both of them the freedom to make runs into the box.

James Maddison has admitted that it is a bit annoying for Tottenham to have their momentum slowed by the international break this week, although he is honoured to be selected by England.

Spurs are currently unbeaten in the Premier League under Ange Postecoglou, winning six games from a possible eight and topping the table mid-way through October.

The Lilywhites have taken points away to Arsenal and Brentford, while also beating Manchester United and Liverpool at home so far this season.

The international break is annoying for Tottenham

Although being at the summit of the table means very little so early in the campaign, it is at least a sign of progress under a new manager, and Spurs will want to surf that wave of momentum for as long as possible.

Therefore, it comes as a slight annoyance that Spurs find themselves in the portion of the season where there are three back-to-back international breaks in September, October and November.

When asked if he was in the form of his life, Maddison told BBC Radio 5 Live (as relayed by the Evening Standard): “Potentially, I feel really good, to be honest.

“I feel at the top of my game, and that is contributing to wins at the minute, and we have started the season really well, and we have got a good momentum.

“The international break has probably come at a bit of an annoying time in a way.

“You would never, ever not want to represent your country, because I always say it is the pinnacle when I am away with England, but if I’ve got my club head on, we’re in good form, we’re in good momentum, we are unbeaten in the league in eight.

“We came back after the last international break and hit the ground running again and won late against Sheffield United in brilliant circumstances. Hopefully, we can do the same off the back of this one and continue the form.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

I would rather just have one big international break in October where national sides play all six of their fixtures in a few weeks than have this constant stop-start for three months.

Ange Postecoglou has laughed off suggestions that he could manage England one day in the future.

While England and Australia are used to butting heads on the cricket and rugby fields, they will come up against each other on the football pitch on Friday in a friendly at Wembley.

Postecoglou was in charge of the Socceroos the last time they came up against the Three Lions back in 2016 at the Stadium of Light, with the hosts running out 2-1 winners on the day.

Ironically, it was Eric Dier who put the ball into his own net in that game while Fraser Forster started between the sticks for England (BBC Sport).

Postecoglou had the opportunity to take his national into the 2018 World Cup in Russia but resigned from the job just ahead of the tournament.

When asked if he would consider managing Australia again one day, the 58-year-old told Football.London: “No, I walked away from a World Cup. We qualified and I walked away. The reason I walked away was I just didn’t enjoy what I was doing.

“I think I’ve said all along, it’s not just doing the job and winning games of football. It’s got to be a higher purpose and my higher purpose in Australia was to change the game. I just don’t think that will happen.”

When asked if he had any regrets about walking away from the job after qualifying for the 2018 World Cup, he added: “No, I knew it was the right time and it wasn’t an easy decision obviously because you are giving away a World Cup. For a lot of people that’s their biggest dream and I gave it up.

“I’d been to 2014 anyway but I knew it was the right decision. It was the right decision for me, it was the right decision for where I saw the next stage of my career and if I didn’t make that decision at that time, if I had waited until after the World Cup, I’ve got no doubt I wouldn’t be sitting here now.”

Could Postecoglou manage England one day?

Postecoglou was quite dismissive of suggestions that he could one day end up as England’s manager.

When asked about taking over at the helm of the Three Lions, he said “Oh, come on mate!” while putting a hand to his face.

When it was put to him that stranger things have happened than an Australian being in charge of the England team, he said: “Very true, stranger things have happened, but no. They’ve got a fantastic manager and I’m eight games into a Tottenham career. That’s how I think.”

Spurs Web Opinion

In hindsight, Postecoglou’s decision to leave the Australian national team and take up a job at Yokohama Marinos certainly proved to be the right call, given the trajectory that his coaching career has gone on since.

Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca believes that Harry Winks is still good enough to play for England.

It was only a few years ago that Winks was looked at as Tottenham and England’s next big midfield hope, with the centre-mid playing a key role in Spurs’ progression to the Champions League final in 2019.

However, the 27-year-old subsequently endured some difficult years, finding it hard to get game time following Mauricio Pochettino’s exit from the North London club while also struggling to remain fit.

The midfielder shows glimpses of his old self during the second half of his loan spell at Sampdoria last season, which convinced Leicester to pay £10m for his services in the summer.

That has proven to be an inspired decision by the Foxes as Winks has dominated the Championship so far and has been one of the main reasons why they currently sit at the top of the table.

Could Harry Winks get another England call-up?

Maresca believes that the former Tottenham man, who has won 10 caps for England, is good enough to earn a recall to the Three Lions set-up.

When asked about Winks making it back to the international set-up, he said (via talkSPORT’s Jason Bourne): “I don’t have any doubt, Harry Winks could be a good player for an international team. He’s helping us a lot, working fantastic. He has the level to be at the top.”

Spurs Web Opinion

We know for a fact that Winks’ ability has never been an issue, based on how he played from 2017 to 2019. The midfielder was evidently struggling for confidence during his final couple of seasons at Spurs and he made the right decision to step down to the Championship as he needed regular game time to get his career back on track.

Danny Murphy thinks Gareth Southgate made a mistake by playing James Maddison on the left against Ukraine, insisting that the Tottenham man does not have the legs needed to track back.

It was not surprising to see Maddison get a start for England in their Euro qualifier last week, given the scintillating form that the attacking midfielder has been in since arriving at Spurs.

The Tottenham man started on the left of a front three, alongside Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka, seemingly being given the freedom to drift inwards in possession.

James Maddison of England warms up prior to the UEFA EURO 2024 qualifying round group C match between England and North Macedonia

Maddison was largely ineffective in the encounter and was replaced midway into the second half by Phil Foden as the Three Lions went in search of an elusive match-winner.

Murphy has insisted that playing the former Leicester City star on the left meant that there were gaping holes defensively for England since the 26-year-old did not track back.

Maddison doesn’t have the legs to track back

The pundit told Premier League All Access Podcast about Southgate’s decision to play Maddison on the left: “It’s been a rarity for a reason because he’s not particularly good defensively, he’s not great. He’s not a great long-distance sprinter.

“He’s not dynamic enough to chase full-backs down and as you say the goal came from that side as Chilwell was 2 vs 1 on more than one occasion. If you’re going to give a player the freedom down the left, you’re going to leave yourself wide open down that side.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Southgate played a lopsided formation, which often shifted from a back four to a back three in possession, with Maddison being given the freedom to receive the ball in the half-spaces and zone 14.

However, the Tottenham man did occupy the left flank when England did not have the ball and Murphy’s point about his lack of defensive work leaving the Three Lions exposed, is a fair one.

Arsenal legend Perry Groves has suggested that Ange Postecoglou should be in consideration for the England job.

Even though Gareth Southgate’s record as England boss has been excellent, particularly in major tournaments, the Three Lions have not managed to cross the line and win silverware, with the pressure now seemingly mounting on the 53-year-old.

His selection decisions are being widely scrutinised, with many in the media already discussing who could replace him in the hot seat.

Sky Sports reported last week that the FA are lining up Pep Guardiola for the England job after next summer’s European Championship while some pundits have suggested that Jurgen Klopp could become a candidate for the role (talkSPORT).

Could Postecoglou manage England one day?

Groves has now thrown Postecoglou’s name into the hat for the job, even though the Australian only took over at Spurs this summer. The Gunners legend insisted that elite managers will be interested in the England job, given the quality of players current in the Three Lions set-up.

Groves has told talkSPORT (10/09/23): “I think these are elite players at England. So, I think the elite managers would be interested in taking this job. What about Ange Postecoglou? Would he get a better tune out of these players?”

Spurs Web Opinion

The best managers in the world are unlikely to consider managing international teams over club sides.

England will either have to look at second-tier managers such as Graham Potter or Eddie Howe (who I believe could lose his job at Newcastle this season) or managers who are in the twilight of their careers.

Jamie O’Hara has criticised Gareth Southgate for playing James Maddison out of position against Ukraine and then taking the Tottenham man off midway into the second half.

It was certainly not surprising to see Maddison named in the starting eleven in the Euro Qualifiers at the Wrocław Stadium in Poland on Saturday, given the impressive start that the 26-year-old has made to the season.

Southgate decided to pack the midfield, with Jordon Henderson, Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham playing behind Maddison while Harry Kane also dropped into the middle of the park frequently to pick up the ball.

That meant that the Spurs midfielder did not really get too much space to operate in and did not see much of the ball, with the Ukrainians defending in a low block.

The former Leicester City man was replaced by Manchester City’s Phil Foden in 65 minutes as the Three Lions went in search of an elusive winner but the change did not have the desired effect.

O’Hara thinks Maddison should have been number 10

O’Hara was far from happy with the way Southgate used Maddison, with the pundit telling talkSPORT about the England boss: “He takes Maddison off, who’s been flying for Tottenham, plays him on the left wing, when, when he signed for Tottenham, he’s been playing as a number 10.

“He’s a number 10. I felt for him, because all I saw was Maddison coming inside, and Bellingham and Maddison making the same runs trying to get the ball.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Maddison certainly did not play on the left wing against Ukraine. He was given a free role and allowed to drift wide if there was space on the flank. However, the formation did not seem to work as the likes of Bellingham, Kane and Maddison were often taking up similar positions.

Stephen Warnock has insisted that James Maddison needs to start as the number ten behind Harry Kane for the Euro qualifiers against Ukraine and Scotland.

Even though Maddison’s attacking output is up there with the best players in the Premier League over the last two to three years, the attacking midfielder has only been capped three times for England so far in his career.

The 26-year-old would be hoping that the high-profile switch he has made to Tottenham will improve his chances of getting more starts for Gareth Southgate’s men.

Harry Kane and James Maddison of England

VALLETTA, MALTA – JUNE 16: Harry Kane and James Maddison of England arrive at the stadium prior to the UEFA EURO 2024 qualifying round group C match between Malta and England at Ta’ Qali Stadium on June 16, 2023 in Valletta, Malta. (Photo by Valerio Pennicino – UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images)

The attacking midfielder has undoubtedly been one of the best English players on show during the first month of the new season, having been deservedly nominated for the Player of the Month award.

Warnock insisted that Maddison has done more than enough to start for the Three Lions and dismissed the suggestion that the Spurs star does not work hard enough as a ‘myth’.

The idea that Maddison doesn’t work hard is a myth

The former Aston Villa left-back told The Football Show on Sky Sports: “My big thing is that we get mixed messages from the manager (Gareth Southgate). So, the manager says, if you are performing in the league, your levels are high, then you are going to play and you will get opportunities.

“James Maddison has been outstanding so far this season. Deserves to start for England. But we know (Southgate) is loyal towards other players in Kalvin Phillips and Harry Maguire getting into the squad without getting minutes, so I am a little bit torn on what Gareth Southgate is going to do.

“Personally, I think he has to play behind Harry Kane. I think what you are asking Harry Kane to do is stay between the goalposts and do what he does best.

“You take away that burden of being the creator and the goalscorer. James Maddison’s vision is unbelievable. His positional sense of what is around him.

“I think there is a myth around him that he doesn’t work hard enough. You see under Postecoglou, he is working harder than most of the other players.

“Also that feeling of being a vice-captain to Son. We have seen him wear the captain’s armband already. He has matured so much during the last two or three years. He deserves to start.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think there is a question about Maddison’s work rate or his ability to cover distance. However, the reality is that he is just not as good a presser as the likes of Mason Mount and Phil Foden are.

One could argue that he provides a lot more on the ball than the aforementioned players, which is why I believe he should start for England as the most advanced of the three midfielders alongside Rice and Bellingham.

Alasdair Gold reveals that Alfie Devine has now been called up to train with England’s senior squad by Gareth Southgate.

Devine has looked a class above for Tottenham’s Under-21s over the past couple of seasons and has shone for England’s youth sides over the last few years, being part of the side that won the UEFA European Under-19 Championship last year and featuring in the FIFA U-20 World Cup this summer.

The 19-year-old, who has trained with the first-team at Spurs quite regularly over the past two years, now has an opportunity to show what he can do in senior football, having joined Port Vale on loan.

The midfielder has made a promising start to his time at Vale Park, coming off the bench to pick up an assist and score a late match-winner from the penalty spot to guide the League One side to a 2-1 win over Oxford United on Saturday.

Alfie Devine trains with the senior England squad

Gold has now revealed that Devine has a chance to catch the eye of Southgate as he has been called up to train with the Three Lions squad alongside the likes of James Maddison and Harry Kane.

Spurs Web Opinion

Devine has delivered every single time he has had the opportunity to take the step up to a higher level, which is why I have no doubt that he will take League One by storm this season.

I would not be surprised if Spurs recall the midfielder in January and loan him out to a Championship side for the second half of the campaign.

Tottenham academy starlet Dane Scarlett has been called up to the England Under-21s squad for the first time.

There is plenty of excitement around Scarlett, not only at Tottenham but also in the England youth ranks, with the striker being a regular part of the Under-20 and Under-19 squads over the past couple of seasons.

The 19-year-old was part of the side that won the Under-19 European Championship last year before representing the Under-20s at the World Cup during the summer.

Scarlett spent last season on loan at Portsmouth but after a bright start to his spell at Fratton Park, he faded away a bit in the second half of the campaign.

Dane Scarlett receives first England U21 call-up

The striker will now get a crack at the Championship this term, having completed a deadline-day move to Ipswich Town.

Soon after completing his switch to Portman Road, Scarlett learned that he would link up with the Young Lions squad as they begin their European Championship qualification campaign.

England’s Under-21s, who now have a new head coach in Lee Carsley, will travel to Luxembourg on Monday, 11 September, for their group stage opener.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is certainly an achievement for someone who turned 19 just a little while ago to be called up to the England Under-21s set-up, especially given the abundance of talent that the Young Lions could potentially call upon. Scarlett is unlikely to start against Luxembourg but he will be hoping to get an opportunity as a substitute.

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson has suggested there will be a lot of details involved in the Harry Kane deal which have not been made public, including a potential buy-back clause for a relatively low fee.

On completing a move to Bayern, Kane sent an emotional message to Tottenham fans on social media, thanking them for their support, but the striker curiously also added that this was not a ‘goodbye’, hinting at a possible return to the North London club in the future.

There have been some suggestions over the last few weeks that Spurs had been pushing for a buy-back clause to be added to the deal (Express), but based on various reports, it does not appear as if such a clause has been agreed (BBC Sport).

When Ange Postecoglou was asked last week about a potential buy-back clause, the Australian insisted that he does not know about the details of the agreement, but he remarked that the 30-year-old will be back at N17 in ‘in one capacity or another’ in the future (Football.London).

Callum Wilson hints at Harry Kane Tottenham return

Wilson believes that the agreement between Bayern and Tottenham could well have a clause that makes it easier for the Lilywhites to re-sign the striker.

The Magpies star said on The Footballer’s Football Podcast about the Kane deal: “There is going to be things that we don’t know about for sure. There is going to be things like him wanting to give back to the club that gave him so much.

“There’s going to be things like him being able to come back to Tottenham further down the line, I’m guessing, for a lower fee. There is going to be so much things we don’t know about because like everyone else we are just fans in this situation.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think Bayern would have agreed to a buy-back clause, given the size of the fee they paid for Kane. However, I am certain that Spurs would have a right to match any offer that Bayern accept for the striker in the future.

However, it is premature to think about the 30-year-old potentially returning to the club as that could be influenced by a lot of factors, including how competitive or otherwise Spurs are in three of four years’ time.

Speaking to the press ahead of the pre-season friendly against his former club Leicester City tomorrow, James Maddison discussed his reasons for joining Tottenham Hotspur and explained the kind of versatility he can offer his new team.

Spurs had been tracking Maddison for a very long time before finally making the transfer a reality this summer.

Having been unable to prevent Leicester City from being relegated to the Championship, the playmaker was able to jump ship and remain in the Premier League.

There are high hopes around North London that Maddison can offer the kind of creativity that Spurs have been lacking since Christian Eriksen left the club.

During his time at Leicester, Maddison proved he is just as capable of finding the net himself as he is at providing assists for those around him.

Maddison would play in whatever position is needed

Luckily for Ange Postecoglou, his new signing is talented enough to play in a range of different roles and is more than willing to do whatever is necessary to help the team.

The pair were talking at a press conference today attended by Football.London and Maddison spoke on the reasons he joined Postecoglou’s regime.

He said: “I’m an ambitious guy. I’m hungry to do well. When you have a decision to make and choosing my next club, the chat with the manager was just brilliant.”

On the idea of finding his best position for Spurs, Maddison added: “I think Gareth [Southgate] has said I can play in that front line. I’ve showed over the last few years I can play anywhere.

“I played as a number eight the other day for the gaffer. I’ll play anywhere, even at right-back if he wants me to.”

Judging by Postecoglou’s shake of the head after that comment, we shouldn’t expect to see Maddison playing in defence any time soon.

Spurs Web Opinion

The beauty of James Maddison is that he could easily be one of the best in the league in any of those attacking positions, and the idea of him linking up with the talent we have up top is tantalising.

Hopefully we get to see him in a range of different positions over this pre-season tour.

Gareth Southgate has insisted that it would not be much of a hindrance to the England side if his national captain, Harry Kane, moves to the Bundesliga.

Reports from Germany continue to suggest that Bayern Munich are not prepared to give up their pursuit of Kane despite Tottenham’s reluctance to sell the striker.

On Thursday, we relayed a report from SportBild which claimed that the 29-year-old is desperate to move to the Allianz Arena following his conversations with Thomas Tuchel.

The report added that the centre-forward is even prepared to threaten to join Bayern on a free transfer next summer if Spurs do not allow him to make the move now.

However, Tottenham seemingly remain determined to hold on to their talisman, with The Evening Standard reporting on the same day that the club are prepared to have crunch talks with the striker over his future when he returns to pre-season training next week.

The publication suggested that Daniel Levy has not given up hope that Kane could commit to a new contract at Spurs, even though the player has no intention of signing a new deal at the moment.

Harry Kane’s future will not impact England

It remains to be seen what this summer holds for the Tottenham man, but Southgate has insisted that it will not affect England’s plans one way or the other.

When asked about the prospect of his captain moving to Germany full-time, the Three Lions boss told BBC’s Test Match Special (as relayed by The Mirror): “I think with the players we’ve had abroad, we had Jude Bellingham in Dortmund, and we had a very good relationship with Borussia Dortmund when Jude was there for example.

“We’re such a small world now that we can fly and see them, we can go to the training grounds, we knows the coaches abroad, our medical teams connect.

“These are top clubs and it’s easy to have as good a connection with Real Madrid where Bellingham is now compared to one of our big clubs really.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Seeing the likes of Bellingham and Rice make big moves and seeing some of his other England teammates such as Walker, Stones and Grealish winning the Premier League and Champions League titles, would surely be playing on Kane’s mind.

One can understand why the striker would be desperate to get his hands on silverware and why he might not have the patience for another rebuild at Spurs. However, Levy and co might believe that the 29-year-old could change his mind if Postecoglou’s appointment has the desired effect next season.

The goal came just before the half-hour mark when Marcus Rashford picked up the ball down the left-hand flank and found the forward run from his Manchester United team-mate Luke Shaw, who did well to square the ball back across goal for Kane to fire home.

It was Kane’s 57th goal for England and was his first touch inside the Macedonian penalty area at Old Trafford which only proves how lethal he is when he gets an opportunity.

The 29-year-old has now further extended his record at the top of England‘s all-time goalscorer list and is now just one shy of netting a half-century while wearing the captain’s armband.
