The Times have revealed that Chelsea are currently in front of Tottenham in the race for RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol.
The report states that Tottenham remain keen on snapping up Gvardiol, whose reputation blossomed as a result of his displays for Croatia at the World Cup in Qatar.
However, it is explained that the North London club are now trailing the Blues in the race for the 21-year-old ahead of the summer transfer window.
It is explained that the two London clubs would have to sign the Leipzig star this summer if they are to avoid paying a £97m release clause, which will kick in from the start of 2024.
The Times assert that Gvardiol wants to ply his trade in the Premier League next season and that the player has been on Chelsea’s radar since the age of 17.
Finally, the publication also reveals that Todd Boehly held talks with Leipzig for the centre-back last summer but pulled out from the deal since the £70m fee they were quoted at the time was excessive.
Spurs Web Opinion
If it is a two-horse race between us and Chelsea for Gvardiol, we could have an advantage since we might have Champions League football to offer.
However, I expect a lot more of Europe’s big hitters, including Real Madrid, to get involved in the race for the 21-year-old, and I doubt if Spurs would get into a bidding war for the Leipzig star.
