Lenglet had been linked with a return to Tottenham for much of the summer on the back of his season-long loan spell at the North London club last season (AS via Sport Witness).

However, it was reported by Sport at the start of this week that Barcelona had thrown in the towel in their efforts to sell the Frenchman permanently to Spurs or to any other club.

The outlet explained that the Catalan giants were looking to loan out the centre-back as they were desperate to get his salary off their wage bill and it was subsequently revealed by Jijantes FC a couple of days ago that a move to Villa could open up as a possibility for the centre-back.

Lenglet returning to PL but not to Tottenham

If Romano’s latest update is to be believed, Lenglet is now indeed on his way back to English football, with a move to Villa Park now on the offing for the player.

The journalist claimed that the West Midlands club have reached an agreement with Barca over a loan deal for the centre-back and have also agreed personal terms with the 28-year-old.

He added that the former Tottenham man will travel to England to have his medical alter today.

Emery has seemingly signed Lenglet as cover for Pau Torres following the injury to Tyrone Mings. I do not think any Spurs fan would be too displeased at the club’s decision not to move for the Frenchman.

However, I do wonder what this means for Eric Dier’s and Davinson Sanchez’s futures as I think there is now a decent chance that one of the two remain at Spurs.

I expect Tottenham to offload Sanchez and Tanganga over the coming days and bring in one decent centre-back. However, I do not think that player is likely to be Lenglet. The only way I can see Spurs making a late move for the Frenchman is if they are also successful in moving Eric Dier on.

That’s according to Marca, who claim Sevilla have “asked about” the potential of reuniting with the player they sold to Barca back in 2018. It is said that the “problem” would be Lenglet’s wage, which Sevilla would be unable to pay “in its entirety.”

If we wanted Lenglet, we would surely have signed him weeks ago, so I would say we are firmly out of this race. There are far better options out there for us in this position, if we are just willing to spend the money to make the right investment. AS have now stated that the door is still open for the Frenchman to return to N17, with Spurs ‘continuing to insist’ on the centre-back’s signing.

If Gazzetta’s latest update is to be believed, Spurs could not face competition from Italy for Lenglet’s services.

The report claimed that the Middle Eastern side were locked in talks with Barcelona over a deal for the Frenchman.

Al-Nassr’s interest in the 28-year-old was subsequently backed up by Sport, who claimed that the Saudi club were willing to meet Barca’s €15m (£13m) asking price, which Tottenham have no intention of doing.

However, it was explained that the centre-back was not particularly keen on making a switch to Al-Nassr and was prioritising a move to Spurs, with whom he had already agreed a three-year contract.

The publication added that the defender was hoping that Barca can reach a compromise with Tottenham when the Lilywhites travel to Catalonia for the Joan Gamper trophy.

Lenglet has turned down Saudi Arabia move

Reverter has now gone a step further by asserting on social media that Lenglet has given a definitive ‘no’ to the approach from Saudi Arabia.

It seems like Lenglet has his heart set on a move to Tottenham, which is why the North London club appear convinced that playing the waiting game would help them get a favourable deal for the Frenchman, with pressure now pilling on Barca to reduce their wage bill.

It is explained that the Middle Eastern side are even willing to meet Barca’s €15m (£13m) asking price, which Tottenham have no intention of doing.

Clement Lenglet has a Spurs contract ready to go

However, Lenglet is thought to be keen on returning to North London, having already agreed on a three-year contract with the Lilywhites.

The report adds that the situation is now ‘heating up’ and a solution ‘can be found’ by the end of this week.

The 28-year-old is said to be holding out hope that Tottenham and Barca can reach a compromise and Sport suggest that the parties could look to hammer out an agreement when the Premier League side travel to Catalonia for the Joan Gamper Trophy clash on 8 August.

It is clear that Tottenham do not want to pay over the odds for Lenglet and are going to continue playing the waiting game.

Lenglet is not going to be an automatic starter for Postecoglou, which is why Spurs are not under any pressure to conclude the deal early as they are with some of their other key targets.

Clement Lenglet could be off to Saudi Arabia

A move to the Middle East would see Lenglet become a team-mate of Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr and more recently Sadio Mané, who has sealed his exit from Bayern Munich.

During his time in North London last season, Lenglet made 35 appearances across all competitions and scored one goal (transfermarkt).

With Fabrizio Romano earlier today claiming that Tottenham closing in on a deal for Micky van de Ven, it seems unlikely that they will also look to move for Lenglet considering Ben Davies is already covering the left-centre-half position.
