Micky van de Ven shone on his debut for Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday and Squawka have now revealed that the centre-back had the highest duel success rate of any player across the Premier League over the weekend.

Van de Ven faced quite a stern test in his first Premier League outing, with Brentford being one of the best counter-attacking sides and one of the most physical teams in the division.

However, the Dutchman passed the test with flying colours as he was dominant in 50-50 duals and was near flawless in possession of the ball.

The 23-year-old showed maturity beyond his years with many Spurs fans seeing shades of Jan Vertonghen about his game.

Ange Postecoglou admitted after the game that he took a gamble by starting the former Wolfsburg man, given that he had only three training sessions with the side, and praised the centre-back for his display (Football.London).

The numbers certainly bear out how good Van de Ven was at the Gtech Community Stadium, with Squawka revealing that the defender lost just one of the ten duals he faced and did not commit a single foul through the 90 minutes.

The thing to note is that Van de Ven was essentially playing against two wide-forwards in Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa, which is why we cannot read too much into his dual success rate. The Dutchman will certainly have tougher tests in that respect.

However, I was surprised to see how composed he looked on the ball and while defending counter-attacking situations in his first Premier League outing. While it is still early days, it does seem like we might have a gem on our hands.
