Micky van de Ven admits that he made up his mind about joining Tottenham as soon as he spoke to Ange Postecoglou about the style of football he wants to implement at the club.
While there have been a lot of column inches dedicated to how James Maddison has hit the ground running at Tottenham and about Yves Bissouma being reborn under Postecoglou, Van de Ven’s brilliant start to life at Spurs had got a bit under the radar.
Despite being just 22 years of age, he has settled in seamlessly into the Premier League and into Spurs’ ultra-attacking system, which demands a lot of the central defenders.
The Dutchman has hardly put a foot wrong, having not only been dominant in duals but also having shown tremendous composure on the ball.
Postecoglou talks convinced Micky Van de Ven
In many ways, Van de Ven looks tailor-made for Postecoglou’s system and the defender has now revealed that his conversation with the 57-year-old is what convinced him to join the Premier League side.
When asked why he gave the green light to join Spurs, he told talkSPORT: “I spoke with the manager, I think that’s the most important part to make your decision.
“Of course, you can talk with people from the club like the director, but he’s not going to train you on the pitch, it’s the trainer who has to make you better.
“You have to love his style of play, how he wants to play, you have to love it, because if you don’t get the vibe, the feeling, the system I want to play, then it’s not going to work.
“So I talked with the trainer and everything in the meeting went well and I love the way of playing, so that made a really huge decision for me to go to Tottenham.”

Out of all our new signings, Van de Ven is the one who has impressed me the most so far. Centre-backs often take a season or two to get adjusted to the intensity and the physicality of the Premier League but the Dutchman has looked at home straight away.
