Mido has admitted that he was not completely convinced when Tottenham Hotspur signed Micky van de Ven in the summer but he has been thoroughly impressed by the centre-back’s displays so far.

In recent history, the Premier League has been the toughest league for centre-backs to adapt to, with many taking their time to get adjusted to the physicality and speed of the division.

However, despite being just 22 years of age and having had just one full season in the Bundesliga, Van de Ven has seamlessly adapted to the demands of English football.

In fact, the Dutchman even looks like the senior member of the duo alongside Crisitan Romero at times, exuding calmness and always appearing to make the right decisions under pressure.

Micky Van de Ven is proving people wrong at Spurs

Mido revealed that he had his doubts over the Netherlands Under-21 international’s ability to cope with the forwards in the Premier League, but admitted that the Spurs newcomer has proved him wrong.

The former Tottenham striker told talkSPORT (9/10 8:57am): “I’ll be honest when I first saw [Micky] Van de Ven with his movement I was a bit worried, to be honest.

“I understand the idea of Ange [Postecoglou] that he wants a left-footed centre-back to start from the back and to have a better angle to see the whole of the pitch playing the ball between the lines and the diagonals.

“But defensively, I was really worried that this guy would struggle in the Premier League. I know in the Premier League that you always play against big guys up front and the likes of [Erling] Haaland and [Ivan] Toney, all the big guys, it’s very difficult to defend.

“It’s not like the Dutch league, it’s different, it could be a shock for him. But to be honest to the lad, he’s been brilliant.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is fair to say that most Spurs fans would have preferred Tapsoba to Van de Ven in the summer.

However, on the back of the start that the Dutchman has made, I doubt Tottenham supporters would swap the 22-year-old with any other left-sided centre-back in the world, including the likes of Bastoni and Gvardiol.

Former Tottenham striker Mido says the Spurs players now look hungry on the pitch and added that Ange Postecoglou has found the perfect midfield balance.

While Tottenham did show their powers of recovery last season as well, coming from behind to get some wins and draws, they arguably now have much more of a winning mentality.

The body language of the players suggests that they believe they can win every game, which was once again evident at Kenilworth Road on Saturday, with the Spurs stars not letting their heads drop despite Yves Bissouma’s sending-off and emerging with a hard-fought 1-0 win.

Mido feels that one of the main reasons for the Lilywhites’ transformation this season is due to the balance they now have in the middle of the park.

LONDON, ENGLAND – AUGUST 6: Pape Matar Sarr of Tottenham Hotspur hangs onto the net during the pre-season friendly match between Tottenham Hotspur and Shakhtar Donetsk at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on August 6, 2023 in England. (Photo by Jacques Feeney/Offside/Offside via Getty Images)

Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sar are thriving

The Egyptian suggested that, unlike the midfield combinations that Spurs have had over recent years, Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr complement each other well.

Mido told talkSPORT (9/10 8:57am): “When you watch Tottenham, you can easily see that the players are hungry. The players are willing to fight for the team. I can see that in all the players.

“I really like [Yves] Bissouma of course, a quality player. Pape Sarr is a quality player and the balance between them in the middle of the park. I don’t think Tottenham had this balance in the midfield for years now and I’m not comparing them with the quality of the players.

“Of course, Tottenham always had quality players, but the balance between Bissouma and Sarr is just perfect. One drops deep, is very good on the ball of course and he’s like a pitbull when he loses the ball and tries to get it back as quick as he can.

“And Sarr can cover yards on the pitch, he’s a good dribbler on the ball, he gets into the box, it’s a great balance.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The amount of ground Sarr covers off the ball is an absolute joke and he must be a nuisance to play against. Playing with him and Bissouma in the middle of the park almost feels like we have one extra player in the middle of the park due to their engine.

Ex-Zamalek coach Helmy Toulan has said that former Tottenham Hotspur striker Mido was more technically gifted than Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah.

Mido arrived at Spurs from Roma in the January of 2004 with a big reputation and made a decent impact in North London.

While the striker’s goal tally during his two-and-a-half years at White Hart Lane is not particularly impressive, he was unplayable on occasions, with his physicality often making him a nightmare for defenders to play against.

The ex-Egyptian international eventually fell down the pecking order and left to join Middlesbrough in the summer of 2007 after the arrival of Darren Bent, with Spurs already boasting the likes of Dimitar Berbatov, Robbie Keane and Jermaine Defoe in their ranks.

Mido’s career flattered to deceive after he left Tottenham, with the striker having short and unsuccessful spells with the likes of Wigan, West Ham and Ajax.

However, according to Toulan, the former Tottenham man was more gifted than his compatriot Salah and it was his ‘habits’ that prevented him from fulfilling his potential.

He told ON Time Sports: “In terms of ability, Mido is more technically gifted. But his habits never allowed him to fulfil his potential. I coached him when he was 16 and I know what he can do.

“What Mohamed Salah achieved hasn’t been done by any Egyptian player before. His incredible mentality and his smart agent (Ramy Abbas) helped him get to where he is now.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that Mido failed to fulfil his potential as he was unplayable at times, and Toulan is right in suggesting that the striker’s attitude was to blame. However, I believe it is ridiculous to suggest that he was anywhere near Mohamed Salah, who will go down as a Premier League legend.

Former Tottenham striker Mido has admitted that he was not a fan of the kit the Lilywhites were wearing against Newcastle yesterday.

Tottenham’s third kit this season features quite a unique design, with the prints and patterns being inspired by eight local creatives on the topic of what N17 means to them.

NIKE also previously revealed the design of the kit, which has a purple and teal base and graphics that range from the industrial to the artistic, was synthesized through training workshops with Tottenham Textiles.

The Lilywhites wore their third kit for the first time in the Premier League at St James’ Park yesterday.

The away side also put in what was arguably their most impressive showing of the campaign, with the final 3-2 scoreline actually flattering Newcastle.

The performance would have encouraged Nuno Espirito Santo, with the win taking his side to fifth in the Premier League table.

However, Mido took to social media to admit that he was annoyed by the kit that his former side were wearing.

Spurs Web Opinion

While I am not a big fan of the third kit, what I found particularly annoying yesterday was the fact that the colours did not contrast with that of Newcastle’s. So, the game was a little difficult to watch at times.

Former Spurs striker, Mido has hit out at Daniel Levy for not giving managers any control in North London, while also adding that he never will.

Mido even claimed that Pochettino was sacked because he started to ask for more in the transfer window and compared his team to Manchester City.

The Argentine was sacked back in November 2019 and Jose Mourinho was immediately instated as the new head coach. However, The Special One only lasted 18 months in charge, receiving his marching orders in late April this year.

Spurs have now been without a permanent manager for over 50 days and, most recently, talks with Antonio Conte reportedly stalled as the Italian was asking for too much.

It was reported that Daniel Levy pulled the plug on talks as he believed Conte’s demands would put the club into financial meltdown.

However, Football Insider have revealed that Fabio Paratici will soon be announced as Tottenham’s new Director of Football and will take over transfers and contract negotiation responsibilities.

Mido said: ‘Tottenham fans should know better.

‘Daniel Levy will never bring any manager in who wants full control of the football decisions will never bring in a demanding manager!!

‘That’s why he sacked Poch when he started to ask for more players when he started to compare his team to City.’

Former Tottenham striker Mido took to social media to implore the Football Association to sack Gareth Southgate and appoint Spurs head coach Jose Mourinho as his replacement.

Southgate came under plenty of criticism for adopting a negative approach after England lost 2-0 to Belgium on Sunday, which ended their hopes of qualifying for the final four of the Nations League.

The England boss came out fighting in his post-match press conference when he insisted that his side gave a very good account of themselves on the night despite the 2-0 loss.

Mido played under Southgate during his time at Middlesbrough in what was the former Aston Villa defender’s first job in management.

The striker made it clear that he was not too impressed with his former boss during his time at the Riverside Stadium and insisted that the Three Lions needed a stronger personality to lead them, identifying Mourinho as that man.

Tottenham legend Graham Roberts then responded by joking that the Portuguese coach can take the England job after he has won the Premier League title with Spurs, which Mido seemed to agree with.

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker, Mido has revealed that Martin Jol stopped him from completing a potential transfer to Manchester City in 2007.

Mido arrived at Spurs from Roma in the January of 2004 with a big reputation and made a decent impact in North London.

While the striker’s goal numbers during his two and a half years at White Hart Lane are not particularly impressive, he was unplayable on occasions, with his physicality often making him a nightmare for defenders to play against.

The Egyptian international eventually fell down the pecking order and left to join Middlesbrough in the summer of 2007 after the arrival of Darren Bent, with Spurs already boasting the likes of Dimitar Berbatov, Robbie Keane and Jermaine Defoe in their ranks.

However, Mido has now revealed that he could have joined Man City in the January of 2007, with the deal having been agreed before Spurs blocked the move.

He told KingFut: “Martin Jol blocked my move to Man City after I reached an agreement with Stuart Pearce, their coach back then.

“That came after I’d played against Arsenal in the Carling Cup and scored a goal.

“There was an agreement – but Jol told me that he couldn’t let me leave after that performance.

“After that, I was about to play the main role – but got an injury setback that kept me out of playing for a long period.”

Mido never managed to get his career back on track after leaving Tottenham and was not helped by consistent injury problems.

The former Spurs striker revealed that Middlesbrough were not completely honest with him and that he made a mistake by moving to the Riverside stadium.

He added: “Steve Bruce was Birmingham’s manager back then, and he wanted to sign me.

“But Boro were UEFA Cup finalists, and in the top ten – maybe top six – in the league back then. Also, the contract was very good.

“I wasn’t lucky at the club, because they were experiencing a bad time after their peak.

“I think even until now the club hasn’t recovered from what happened then.

“Yakubu, Mark Viduka and many [other] big names left that summer, and the club changed its plan with a new young coach in Gareth Southgate.

“The coach’s lack of experience and the big names leaving set Middlesbrough on a declining curve. They still haven’t healed from that period.

“I didn’t know before accepting to join them that they would decline like that.

“The club wasn’t honest with me that they were going to cut their budget at once, set free all the big names and get a young coach, which was the owner’s decision.

“I made a big mistake leaving Spurs for Middlesbrough. I wasn’t patient enough to play a match and not play the next one.

“I should have been more patient. Joining Boro wasn’t the right decision to take at that time.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Manchester City were a lower mid-table club back then and it was only after they were first acquired by Thaksin Shinawatra and then by the Abu Dhabi group, that they became a force. Most players, if faced with a choice between City and Boro in 2007, would have picked the latter. It is a shame that Mido never really managed to fulfil his potential as he had all the attributes to thrive in English football.

Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace on Sunday was enough to secure the Lilywhites a sixth-place finish and a spot in next season’s Europa League (BBC).

However, former Spurs striker, Mido questioned the touchline ‘scenes’ from Jose Mourinho and his backroom staff as they celebrated the Europa League qualification.

When Mourinho took over at the helm in November he inherited a Spurs side that sat in a disappointing 14th spot in the Premier League (TalkSPORT).

Mido took to Twitter to voice his opinion on Mourinho’s celebrations following the game and it is fair to say the Egyptian seemed far from impressed.

The tweet suggests Mido feels the Portuguese manager has fallen from his high standards set during his time at the likes of Chelsea and Inter Milan.

However, after the game, Mourinho admitted that he feels Spurs “belong” in the Champions League, given this is their first year out of the competition since the 2015/16 season (Evening Standard).

Spurs Web Opinion

I can see where Mido is coming from, to an extent. Looking back a few years you would not expect Mourinho to be in this position – fighting for sixth spot. However, I think he and his staff were just overjoyed to have turned the 14th place Spurs he joined around.

Former Marseille coach, Jose Anigo, has now revealed that Didier Drogba once had a bust-up with ex-Spurs man, Mido, aboard a flight back from a match.

Drogba and Mido were teammates at Marseille during the 2003/04 campaign and then later came up against each other in the Premier League at Chelsea and Spurs respectively.

Anigo revealed that Mido was prone to playing some bizarre jokes on people during his time at Marseille, including one mid-flight on a stewardess.

Droga apparently took offence to this particular prank and things became heated between him and Mido, with Anigo even claiming that the brawl caused turbulence.

Anigo recalled (RMC Sport as relayed by The Scottish Sun):  “There was an altercation between Drogba and Mido on board a plane.

“We were coming back from a European tie. Mido used to play some bizarre jokes. He played one on the stewardess, and Didier didn’t appreciate it.

“He remonstrated with Mido, and things became very heated between the two of them. We were up in the air, and I can tell you the plane shook! They caused turbulence.

“They were a couple of heavyweights. Normally they were friends, but at that point, tempers flared between them.”

Mido played 63 games for Tottenham between 2004 and 2007 before moving to Middlesbrough. In that time, he managed 20 goals for the Lilywhites (Wikipedia).

Meanwhile, Drogba became somewhat of a Premier League legend across his eight seasons with Chelsea, racking up 341 appearances across all competitions and 157 goals (Wikipedia).

Former Tottenham striker Mido has taken to Twitter to engage in some banter with Jermain Defoe after the former England international was asked to name his best striker partner during an interview with Sky Sports’, The Football Show.

Defoe has played for some stellar names over the course of his career, not just for Spurs but also for England.

Among the first players which he forged a formidable partnership with at Spurs was Mido, who arrived in North London from Roma in January 2005.

Mido and Defoe quickly struck up an understanding under the leadership of Martin Jol with the England star benefitting from the Egyptian’s physical presence as a target man.

However, Mido eventually fell out of favour at Spurs and was sold to Middlesbrough in the summer of 2017.

Defoe unsurprisingly picked out Peter Crouch as his favourite partner although he gave honourable mentions to Wayne Rooney and Paolo Di Canio who he played with for England and West Ham respectively.

Mido took to social media to post a cheeky response to his former Spurs teammate:

Spurs Web Opinion

While Mido was obviously joking here, I actually thought he and Defoe were quite a potent pairing whenever they played together for Spurs. The Egyptian was extremely underrated as although he wasn’t a great goalscorer, he was one of the best target men I’ve seen play for us in recent times.

Former Tottenham striker Mido tore into the team for their first-half display in the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this afternoon.

The Lilywhites lined up with five at the back and were set up to defend deep and soak up the pressure. Unfortunately, Oliver Giroud got in behind after just 15 minutes.

After seeing his initial shot saved by Hugo Lloris, the ball came back to Giroud after a scramble in the box and the former Arsenal man slotted it home to give Chelsea the lead.

Spurs offered little going forward in response and the home side doubled their lead at the start of the second half through a well-taken strike by Marcos Alonso.

Frank Lampard’s side were content to sit back and let Spurs have the ball after going 2-0 up, but the away side didn’t do much with the possession until substitute Erik Lamela saw his low cross deflected into the net late to give the Lilywhites a late consolation.

Here’s what Mido had to say about the first half performance from Jose Mourinho’s boys:

Spurs Web Opinion

I was willing to forgive that first-half performance because I thought we would be more of a threat going forward in the second half but that didn’t turn out to be the case. I thought Jose could have been a little bit more proactive with his substitutions. He waited too long to bring Erik Lamela and Dele Alli on.

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Mido has urged Gareth Bale to end his time at Real Madrid and return to North London.

Bale’s future at the Spanish giants has been the subject of much speculation and with reported wages of £600,000-a-week, they could find it a tough prospect of trying to find the Welshman a new club before the start of the new campaign (Express).

A report earlier this week in AS claimed that Bale is in no rush to leave the Bernabeu, with an apparent source quote to the player saying he “is not going anywhere” despite his disappointment regarding the snub against Betis where he was an unused substitute in the final match of the La Liga season (AS).

Mido was a Spurs player when Bale made the move from Southampton and believes that a return to his former club could see him rekindle his passion for football and that he would get the respect and admiration he deserves in N17.

The Egyptian appeared as a guest on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast radio show on talkSPORT from 8am on 22/5/19 and said: “I’m hearing that he’s just fed up with it all now, he just wants to retire and play golf – that’s his love,”

“It’s a shame, really.

“I hope that’s not true. I’ve always known Gareth as a top professional, he gave everything for Tottenham and gave everything for Real Madrid and I believe he deserves more respect.

“Honestly, I would love to see him back at Tottenham. I remember his first day at Tottenham, I was there and I remember him being shown around the training ground with his mum and dad as a young boy.”

“I believe if he goes back to Tottenham he will get his desire back,” he added.

“I think Gareth is one of those players who needs to feel loved to play well, and at Tottenham everyone loves him.

“The news that’s coming out now is really bad because you can see there’s something against him at Madrid and he deserves more respect.”

The future of Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham Hotspur beyond the Champions League final on June 1st is certainly a cause of concern.

The Spurs boss recently revealed that he would be foolish to remain at the club if there isn’t a change in which Daniel Levy currently runs the club (Sky Sports).

While Spurs have not dipped into the transfer market in the past eighteen months, the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City have both spent large amounts of money in improving their playing squad.

Pochettino will discuss his future with his chairman following the match against Liverpool in Madrid with some fearing the worst.

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Mido believes that Pochettino will leave North London following the prestigious European final.

Pochettino has been linked with the vacant managerial hotseat at Juventus in recent days with an intermediary representing the 47-year-old in taking over at the Serie A giants (Tutto Mercato Web).

Mido appeared as a radio show guest on talkSPORT’s Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast from 8am this morning and said: “I would be really disappointed if he leaves Tottenham,”

“But I think he will be leaving this summer. Honestly, when I see him in the press conference and what he is saying, I really think he will be leaving.”

Opinion

Pochettino’s departure from Tottenham would have almost catastrophic consequences on the progress we have made over the past five years and would also signal Daniel Levy’s appetite not to make the club a contender for trophies.

The Argentine is up there with Bill Nicholson as the best manager in the club’s history and Levy needs to move heaven and earth to keep in in N17.

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Mido has been praised Harry Kane as one of the best strikers that he has seen in recent years.

Mido moved to White Hart Lane on an 18-month loan deal from Roma in 2005, scoring two goals on his debut against Portsmouth before joining permanently for the 2006/07 season.

The Egyptian scored 14 goals in one-and-a-half seasons before returning to Roma and returned for a second spell before falling out with Martin Jol over comments he made about Sol Campbell.

Harry Kane has scored 13 goals and assisted a further two in his 14 Champions
League appearances. He’s scored 26% of Tottenham’s total goals in the competition (13/50).

It has been this type of form which has seen Mido praise the England skipper for his prolific form in front of goal that now sees Kane having registered 151 goals in 230 appearances in all competitions in a Spurs shirt.

Mido has been in London this week, having attended the 3-1 win against Chelsea on Saturday evening and is an admirer of Kane.

Mido was a guest this morning on Sky Sports’ Premier League Daily programme (Wednesday November 28th, 10:45 am) and said: “One of the best, yes. Southgate has played an important role in making him better. I really like Harry Kane, he’s a great striker, one of the best I have seen in years.”

Tottenham Hotspur fans decided to burst into song on the Metropolitan Line train in front of Mido.

The former Spurs striker was in London to watch Mauricio Pochettino’s side take on Chelsea at Wembley and was the subject of attention of the fans following the 3-1 victory.

Mido originally joined Tottenham on an 18-month loan deal from Italian outfit Roma in January 2005 and instantly became a hit after scoring a brace of goals on his debut against Portsmouth at White Hart Lane and went on to score 11 goals in 27 games, ending the campaign as the club’s second highest goalscorer.

The Egyptian finally signed for the club on a permanent basis the following summer for £3.4million (Guardian) but fell foul of manager Martin Jol for comments he made about Sol Campbell.

Mido had called Campbell ‘one of the easiest defenders I have played against’, but his comments drew an angry response from Jol.

“I have spoken to Mido and he is well aware that this is not the kind of comment you make about a fellow player,” Jol told Sky Sports.

“Given the feelings that still run high about Sol among our supporters, Mido’s comments were not only disrespectful, they were also irresponsible.

“I have told him to let his football do the talking in the future.”

Many people dream of managing the mighty Spurs at some point in their life time, and this is apparently the case with former Lilywhite Mido.

In a recent interview, Mido expressed his desire to return to the Premier League as manager of Tottenham.

Mido spent 18 months in North London between 2005 and 2007, racking up 61 appearances and scoring 19 times in a Spurs shirt.

Apparently the taste for Tottenham life was a pleasant one for Mido as he eyes up a return.

Since he retired at the age of 30, he has managed Egyptian sides Zamalek, Ismaily, and Wadi Degla.

Mido also expressed that leaving Spurs for Middlesbrough in 2007 was one of the biggest regrets of his entire career.

Who knows, maybe he’ll be given the chance to make it up to the Tottenham faithful one day from the dugout rather than the pitch.

What do you think, would Mido make a good Spurs gaffer?

He told the Soccer AM podcast: “I would love to manage Tottenham one day, that’s my dream – to manage in the Premier League and to manage Tottenham.

“It’s not easy because I am not English, but I am trying to make the right steps and the right education, maybe I will try to be an assistant somewhere for two or three years and then see what happens.

“I know it’s not easy but my dream is to be Tottenham manager.

“Leaving Tottenham was one of the worst decisions I made.

“I had the chance to stay and I decided to go to Middlesbrough. I wished I could have stayed longer, but as a person if I didn’t play for three or four games I was going crazy. I knew if I stayed and didn’t play I would get in trouble. It was a difficult decision and if I decided now I would have stayed.”

Former Tottenham striker Mido returned to Spurs this weekend to watch the 3-1 victory over Fulham at Wembley.

Mido spent one year on loan at Spurs from AS Roma and one year at White Hart Lane on a permanent basis.

The Egyptian striker netted 19 times in his 61 appearances for the Lilywhites before moving north to Middlesborough.

Mido spent some time before the game on Sky Sports News where he commented on Tottenham’s lack of transfer activity:

“I know Pochettino has not been happy with the transfer policy, especially this transfer market, but I am glad he is not coming out and criticising the club,” Mido said.

“He is working with the players he has got, he is giving the squad the confidence to win games and the easiest thing for Pochettino to do would have been to go out and attack the board because he wanted more players in.”

“I am sure he wanted more players in like (Jose) Mourinho and Rafael Benitez, but Pochettino is so clever.

“If you see his interview on Thursday, he said ‘he didn’t want anyone at the club who is not happy’ because the key to Pochettino’s success so far, in my opinion, is creating the right environment for the squad.”

“I think Tottenham have one of the best managers in the world and they should do everything they can to keep Pochettino at the club for as long as they can.”

Former Spur Mido returned to London over the weekend to watch Spurs cruise to a 3-1 victory over Fulham on Saturday.

The Egyptian striker netted 19 times in his 61 appearances for the Lilywhites and featured alongside the likes of Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane.

The 35-year-old reminisced about his times in north London with the Spurs website:

“I had some great days and made great friends,” he said.

“It was an honour to play for Tottenham. I wish I had stayed (longer). One of the biggest mistakes throughout my career was to decide to leave.”

“Tottenham is a great club and I’m still a great fan. I follow every game and I’m very glad we’re doing well.”

Mido initially joined Spurs on loan from Serie A side AS Roma but finalised a permanent move to the Lilywhites in 2006.

“The fans have always been great to me, since day one,” Mido continued.

“I was lucky that I started well – my first game, two goals. I remember I played for an hour. I wasn’t 100 per cent fit because for two or three months before that I wasn’t playing regularly for Roma.”

Mido left Spurs in 2007 for fellow Premier League side Middlesborough and is now eyeing up a career in management following his studies in football coaching and development.

Spurs fans, do you have any good memories of the Egyptian striker?
