Tottenham Hotspur may well have to look for a long-term Christian Eriksen replacement come the summer, with the great Dane currently set to leave on a free at the end of the season.
Eriksen has been Spurs’ chief playmaker for the entirety of Mauricio Pochettino’s reign as manager, so these will be huge shoes to fill when it comes to his replacement.
Spurs already have Giovani Lo Celso on loan for the season, but the permanent deal is not yet finalised and it is also unclear exactly where he will play in the Pochettino system.
However, ex-Leeds and Middlesborough striker, Noel Whelan, believes that the perfect Eriksen replacement may not be too far away, with Spurs having seen him up close and personal over the past week.
Whelan says that Leicester City’s James Maddison has what it takes to pick up where Eriksen leaves off, but admits that Spurs may face competition to sign the former Norwch player.
Whelan said (Football Insider): “James Maddison is good enough to replace Eriksen, absolutely.
“I saw him when he was breaking through at Coventry and Norwich, and he is a great player.
“He’s now part of the England set-up and you can see why.
“He’s technically excellent, quick-thinking, has a great passing range and hurts teams with his creativity.
“He’s a real gem who would be the perfect Eriksen replacement.
“The problem for Tottenham is there will be plenty of competition for his signature.
“You can see Liverpool, Man City, all the big boys wanting him.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
My dream signing for Tottenham. Has everything that Spurs need and more, and I believe he would be the perfect Eriksen replacement.
