One thing that Spurs are missing out on this season is someone who can take free-kicks and this is something they should address in the January transfer window.
Last season, Spurs had two free-kick takers in Eriksen and Trippier. Obviously, Trippier has left and Eriksen is very likely to leave in the summer, so it is time to look at who Spurs can sign as a set-piece specialist.
Looking at the current team, there does not seem to be any other high-quality set-piece specialists in the squad.
Whilst researching on Football Manager for quality free-kick takers, a familiar name came up, Paulo Dybala. According to the popular game, he is one of the top 10 free-kick takers in the world, which is yet another brilliant reason for Spurs to sign him (Football Manager).
Other realistic signings that we could make are Maddison (TalkSport) and Ziyech (Daily Star), both of whom Spurs were linked to in the summer.
Despite having several midfielders currently in the squad, signing any of these players would, of course, improve our team. Especially, as Pochettino has said that fixes will be made in January (Sky Sports).
Spurs also need to start varying their free-kick routines as they have yet to score a free-kick this season and only scored two last season which is very disappointing. We have Toby and Jan who are fantastic in the air and it has been a long time since they have scored from a set-piece.
For some reason, Spurs currently have a left-footed player run over the ball in each free-kick scenario but it is such an ineffective dummy as I can’t remember the last time the “dummy” player actually took the free-kick.
Either way, Spurs need to focus on improving their set pieces and if that’s through a signing or a current player improving their technique, more goals are needed from these opportunities.
